Ask mc chris

Many of you are no doubt familiar with the works of mc chris. He's probably most well known as the high pitched rapper on the track 'Fett's Vette' that you probably have an MP3 of somewhere. In addition to several highly entertaing albums, he's also the voice of MC Pee Pants (Aqua Teen Hunger Force) and Hesh (Sealab 2021). He's now touring, but you better already have tickets since he sold out his first 8 shows (including my local venue. The wife is very unhappy with me for not getting tickets in time). He'll also be performing at the Penny Arcade Expo later this year. This is your chance to ask him those burning questions. Standard Slashdot interview rules apply: Ask here, and we'll pick from the best of them and then wait patiently for Chris to bless us with his words.

Van Halen used to have a rider in their touring contract that their dressing room would have a bowl filled with M&M's, but that there could be absolutely no green M&M's in that bowl.

There are two takes on this. The first is that this sort of term in the contract allows an artist to basically do what the hell they like (e.g. cancel shows, get paid stuff, whatever) if it isn't met; which it very likely won't be.

HOWEVER, Van Halen had a different explanation. Basically, they had (IIRC) heavy and very elaborate stage apparatus which was very demanding and required setting up correctly (e.g. it could collapse or get damaged if this wasn't done).

Lots of places weren't meeting the specs, or cutting corners, and they were having all sorts of problems as a result.

Their solution was to have inconspiculously buried amongst the list of requirements the "green M&Ms" clause.

If they found any green M&Ms, they knew the organisers hadn't been paying enough attention to the requirements, and there was trouble in store. I can't remember if they said they stopped any shows as a result, or if they just made them go over everything again.

It is the same thing in Hollywood where those who seem to lack real talent tend to rely upon the cheap tricks of smut and vulgarity. Very few people are actually able to use these things in a truly creative, comedic way, and I find that I inevitably enjoy entertainment that avoids such traps.

As I said in my post, I "probably" would rather listen to fingernails on a chalk board (though in retrospect, this was probably too strong of a statement). You completely misunderstood my point. No one (not even you) has the time to research and listen to every music style, every musician, every song written on the entire planet. We all (yes, you included) listen to the genres that intrigue us the most or that we have had the most direct contact with. Some go deeper into a few genres. Some go more broad covering many genres but none of them deeply. No one can claim to know everything.

I am a vocalist and piano player as well as a song writer. I enjoy singing and writing harmonies. My vocal songs tend to have a more classical bent to them, though some of them have more of a rock feel if it suits the lyrics. Therefore, I am really not naturally drawn to rap music because it has less emphasis on vocal and harmonic arrangements(though I have heard some that I actually kindof liked -- just not enough to purchase or listen to on a regular basis). In order to find the few good bands that exist, I would have to spend hours sifting through all of the bad ones unless one comes to my attention in a forum like this. To assume that just because I have not come across one of these bands that I am now a backward hick is incredibly narrow minded. In fact, I would argue that the more "cultured" people (ie opera fans, historical scholars, academia, etc.) would been even less likely to have heard of some geek doing rap. I am sure that there are some fields that I know more about than you, but that does not mean that I would label you an ignorant for not knowing it as well as I. I have chosen to spend my time in other musical genres, in honing my writing and playing ability, and researching my own interests. Does this make me an ignorant? Perhaps, but I can guarantee you that you have just as big of a set of ignorances as anyone else in this world. As they say, the more you know the more you realize that you don't know much.

I happen to disagree and commend he choice of the article if for no other reason than to raise awareness of rampant hipocrisy. Apparently /. can have entire sections devoted to subsets of geeks, nerds etc. and no one minds. I'm into anime but is every nerd? I doubt it, yet we have a section here. We also have one called 'It's Funny. Laugh.' with a Monty Python foot. I don't think Monty Python's funny at all, but I understand others here might. Were it to contain a story regarding the comedy group I wouldn't be surprised and certainly wouldn't lash out at those wanting to discuss some related Monty Python news. But I guess for those of us who like AdultSwim, and see nerd related value in its impact on the marketing world or influence in pop-culture and cross cultural mixing we should not discuss this on /. -- Wouldn't want to accidently expose serious nerds who like classic games and first person shooters to any other form of entertainment. I think the subjects of MC Chris' works and the venues he chooses to appear in to give credibility to this article. And as a great fan I'll stay on topic here by asking a question: MC Chris, adult swim seems to promote a lot of cross project creativity (as the multiple appearances for you over shows suggests) was there a very core group of creators initially which really allowed for this to happen? The whole idea of being "geek" is that you don't fit in.

    I fit in once.

My first year of college, there was a halloween party, I went to check it out to see why they had a big plexiglas cube filled with water.

    It. Was. Paradise.

There was a central command unit filled with consoles and dials and whatnot and someone manning it, speaking orders in her mic ("Security to level 8! We have a code 7-a." and so forth), miscelaneous costumed monsters stalking the room.
On the far wall they projected non-stop extracts from various sci-fi movies (mostly Bs, but there was space scenes from the Star Wars too), some of wich I'd never even seen!
And the cube! The cube had a guy in scuba gear in it with a whole lotta goldfish!

Man, if there is a god, that room will be waiting for me in geek heaven.

So, my question to mc chris is: Who are you and how come Taco assumes that I know you?

There's a whole collective/label out there that are 'rap' for people that don't like rap. Yes, I'm talking about anticon.

Of note are Sole (dark beats, often hilarious one-liners, generally one in the eye for gangsta [c]rap), why? (nerdy, white boy art-school hip hop) and Alias (no, not the show; more progressive beats than most of the other stuff on the label).

The Streets is pretty much the mainstream of what's happening in UK rap - check out Roots Manuva. Rapping about drinking pints of bitter and wandering south of the river (that's London, for those of you from across the pond). Special mention must go to Prefuse 73, who specialises in instrumental hip-hop (laugh all you want, it's damn good stuff).

That concludes this public service broadcast.

I agree. As if rap alone wasn't bad enough, now there's some highpitched nerd rapper, that we're supposed to know of in order to be nerds. Weird. What about good music? What happened to that?

Your albums would not be complete without the comedic sketches between your songs. Do you believe they place your pieces within an important (if somewhat fantastic) context that would otherwise be lacking? Or, rather, are the skits there primarily for humour's sake? Which one of your songs has generated the most conversation and debate? I refer here not necessarily to raw attention, but discussion (whether in interviews, conversations with fans, or criticism from your detractors). Please, might you rock Vancouver?
