Skype is extremely over rated. They are doing nothing new. Big deal VOIP. People act like Skype created it. They didn't. The client itself is a PIG. It uses up way too much RAM and it uses too many resources. WTH, %30 CPU wyhen in a call? And it's strictly VOIP. Yeah they are encrypting the traffic so maybe that counts for some of the CPU usage. But I thought slashdotters were mostly AGAINST proprietary shit? Skypes protocol is proprietary so why all the hoopla? Stanaphone kicks the crap out of Skype ANY day of the week. Stanaphone coupled with XLite SIP client. Now thats somethign to rave about. Free incoming calls. Free REAL telephone numbers, Competive rates. Free FAX service, FREE confernece servers. Stanaphone uses SIP, and open protocol. XLite has an SDK for devs. This is a WIN WIN situation. And oh yeah XLite uses a whopping 7MB RAM on my machine and uses maybe 5 - 7 CPU. Call me when Skype actually does something interesting and new.
I don't understand why Skype makes people pay for their phone number to recieve SkypeIn calls. Theres plenty of servicers that offer a free(as in speech) number to recieve incoming calls but require you to pay for outgoing calls. Why didnt Skype use this model? I use Stanaphone which provides me with a free(as in speech) phone number and free(as in speech) incoming calls. I use the XLite frontend. Works flawlessly.
XLite uses about 6MB ram in an idle state and during phone calls takes about 11CPU- 15CPU, Compared to skype which in an idle state takes about 22 - 30MB ram. Skype uses about 30CPU - 40CPU when in a call. Seems like a no brainer. Not too mention XLite+Stanahone allows you to choose between various Codecs(i.e G71*/GSM/iLBC/SPX/etc..) Can't say that for Skype.
XLite+Stanaphoen has amazing voice quality easily comparable to Skype. Oh And Stanaphoe offers free voicemail which gets emailed to ya.
I love Skype, i think it's great. But it's just an instant messenger client which provides great voice chat. It's SIP capabilities are lacking to say the least.
Uh if memory serves me correct. Wasn't it due to certain encryption algorithms that were not exportable. And the Mac contained these. IIRC it has nothing to do with how powerful the chip was inside.
It has some pretty nifty features...and some rather strange ones as well.
Tabbed browsing(although you have to right click a link and select in the menu "Open in new tab")
Thumbnails previews for each tab. Just hover your mouse over a tab and you'll get a a mini shot of it. And surprisingly i dodn't notice a spike in resources when i did this.
The Sidebar isn't half bad and it's removable. I could see how this is useful.
As far as the desktop search is concerned it doesn't give you an oppertunity to NOT install this. But unlike most people i have actually went through the settings in the browser and found you can disable this feature all together. One thing i noticed is that it has Adding/Removing of files from the index in rela time. Unlike Google/Msn(yahoo? i dun think yahoo does this either). So thats a plus, but i'lls tick with MSN Desktop Search(it just works well! no flamage please)
Anyhow it's not half bad. Although the mere fact that it uses IE engine measn instant removal as soon as i am done playing.
why not just run GDM on default F7 and add FDM to F8 as well? this way you can tap F8 and BAM no one is the wiser.
And in another recent study....

A recent study has also shown that 10 out 10 computer stores actually sell computers...shocking!
This study is moot. I mean c'mon he didn't randomly choose 60 channels. He chose them by content..warez.
It's actually quite simple if a little thought is put into it. And updating without IE is still possible, maybe not as convenient.
1. Download MSBA from Microsoft. This isa cool tool and you can get updates from it after you scan your machine by clicking on the reletive "X"'s. And following the links to the updates.
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/tools/mb sahome.mspx
I actually use MSBA to update, and it works quite. well.
2. Delete the backup copies of IE that are stored on the machine before deleting the IE executable in C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\. The backup can usually be found in C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386.
I wouldn't recommend deleting the backup exec entirely, maybe just rename it to something else in case you ever do need it again. Same goes for the one in Program Files. just rename it.
