  1. Re:Microsoft to blame? Nope, ISPs and journalists. on Intel FDIV bug vs ILUVYOU · · Score: 2

Here's the deal, though. The virus was targeted toward luddite users who don't know what a .vbs file is. They may know what an .exe file is, possibly know what .com and .bat file are, but assume everything else will open in word. After seeing .doc .wpf .xls .msg .html .htm .gif .jpg, etc, they get really confused. They don't know what these files are. They just know that they double-click them and see what's in them. I know it's hard to put yourself in that position. I can't even remember if/when I would have been that dumb. I do know that I speak with technicians every day who are still unclear on this concept.
Think about this, you recieve an HTML file from a friend. The subject line says that it's the funniest damn thing they've ever seen. How do you feel about opening it? I personally wouldn't have too much of a problem with it! It's just an HTML file. Right? Consider this, luddites (like Lars Ulrich) don't know that a .vbs is anything different than an HTML file! Those that know better don't open wierd shit. They save it, maybe open it with notepad, but don't open it right away. These are the kind of people who don't even need antivirus programs, and this particular virus isn't targeted at them.

A side effect is that it gives them a little more ad revenue, but that's not that big of a deal. Right? They're still losing money anyway, aren't they?

I'm also pretty sure that in your self righteous way you managed to ignore those criticisms and still think that you were correct about this whole open source thing. I'm not going to bother to correct you on your misconceptions. I'm just going to tell you that I have a free subscription to PCWeek. A magazine of which you are the editor. I thought I detected an anti-Linux bias, and now I'm sure that with an editor like you the magazine could not remain objective regarding my favorite server operating system. 1. Bruce Perens' code was misused last time
    2. He spoke to someone at Be, didn't sue, signed a writ of understanding and didn't cause them any financial harm.
    3. The news about Abit just came out (AFAIK)

I'd like to see a study done on the effects of team sports and aggression. My son comes home from Lacrosse games and practices and the usually calm nice 15 year old is a pumped up mass of testosterone. He usually has to take an hour to just hang out alone in his room watching tv until he can deal with anyone else without being too boisterous. I'd say his games have a large effect on his behavior, but that doesn't mean that we don't encourage him with what he's doing. He loves the sport, and he is very good at it. Besides, the game has made him tougher and more physically fit.
Also, I play Quake 3 with my son. We play capture the flag and are usually on the same team. I run and he blocks. We work together and feel a real sense of accomplishment when we trounce another team. I don't see any problem with this at all.
