I refuse to follow this method when moderating because it simply beats the purpose of Slashdot's filters and the whole point behind the moderation system.

I set my filters sometimes to increase the points (+6) for Insightful/Informative/Interesting and decrease Funny posts when I'm not in the mood for a funny post and I'm more interested in serious posts for a given topic.

I believe that if you want to reward funny posts you should talk to the people behind Slashdot about changing the moderation system and adding Karma points for "Funny".

I just tend to shy away from things that could damage my hardware, and XboX's are fairly expensive around here.

I did a quick search on Xebian's Wiki, but nothing came up for XFPS or MagicBox. I'm too busy to look elsewhere right now..

  6. This was interesting to me on Review: Halo 2 And The MagicBox XFPS · · Score: 1

I'm not a FPS fan myself nor do I play a lot of XboX.

My older brother was here a week ago and he's into FPS. He played Halo 2 with my other brothers and the first thing he said "I wish I had a keyboard and a mouse!" (He played Halo 1 on his PC).

I didn't know there was an extension for XboX to plug in keyboards and mice, I'm sure my older brother would have bought XFPS just to play Halo 2 on the 2 weeks vacation he was here.

I wonder though if Xebian takes advantage of this device. I ran it before on the XboX, but it was extremely painful to use the joystick to control the mouse pointer and to type.

I use my computer for serious work (Yes, that includes posting to Slashdot :P) and I got really excited about Xebian because my younger brothers use the computer for basic web browsing and instant-messaging, and Xebian can satisfy that and get them off my back.

If Xebian uses XFPS, I'll definitely get it!

I'd love to hear from someone who has a Speedtouch 330 Rev4 modem working using PPPoA either on Free/Open BSD...
I own a "Speedtouch 330 USB" rev. 2, I had it working on FreeBSD 4.10, and now on 5.3.
It's (the open source driver) pain to install, and even after it's installed it doesn't perform well under pressure.
If you run any P2P application or anything that puts heavy load on the connection (in terms of number of open connections) then be prepared for frequent disconnections, driver hanging, and a lot of ENOBUFS error messages.

My first advice would be to dump the instructions given on the FreeBSD handbook, they never worked for me. Read the documentation that comes with the driver under doc-bsd directory, that will help you better.
Also avoid initiating the ppp connection from rc.conf at startup, or you'll be seeing a lot of "where is this crappy modem???" messages. Instead use the adsl.sh.sample found in the /usr/local/etc/rc.d directory, it works better.

Also since you're using rev4, you'll need the firmware ZZZL_3.012 instead of KQD6_3.012, move that to /usr/local/libdata/mgmt.o to be able to use the startup script right away, or else you'll have to edit the former mentioned adsl.sh file.

The driver (as far as I know) was originally written for Linux then ported to BSD. The BSD maintainer doesn't own a speedtouch modem at the moment, so bsd specific tweaks are on halt.
Also I had better luck using the older driver version in the ports tree /usr/ports/net/pppoa rather than the latest version from the website.

Sadly, I'm stuck with this modem since my ISP forces it down my throat and the local market doesn't have better ethernet based alternatives. But if you do have a choice, stay as far as you can from it!

    This is just stupid.

If you read Novell's complaint they mention Microsoft's integration of IE into windows, which was the reason WordPerfect failed.

Browsing has nothing to do with word processing, and I just don't buy that "... the integration of browsing functions into Windows, coupled with Microsoft's refusal to publish certain of these functions was a primary strategy for excluding Novell's application ..." (Sec. 7, Page 3, from the complaint).

I believe they're just trying to piggyback on the Anti-trust law suite that was filed against MicroSoft by the US government.

I'd be very surprised if the court would even consider their claims.

Novell, be happy with the 500 something million dollars you got for Netware and move on!
