Thank you for mentioning this fact. I would like to add to this by also mentioning if this is used in an investigation, the people investigating you will already know whether or not you are in IT. If you are, they will probably use whatever taps they can deploy at the ISP since it would be possible their bug would be found. If the investigators find you are a middle-aged woman who works at the grocery store and have no extended education, then it would be rather likely you would get the spyware tap to save time/money/warrants/etc over getting one at the ISP.

Note how the above paragraph was an assumption I pulled out of my ass, much like your entire post.

The fact is, I never mentioned government intervention. By its very mention "grass roots" is typically used to describe a non-government activity. How you missed this and thought I was pro-government intervention is beyond me.

Anyway, I don't post against the "great firewall of china" as you suggest. I really could care less about it since I don't live and china and really could care less what happens to people over there. What? Did you read my name and think "OH PANSEY LIBERAL MUST MAKE A WITTY REPLY"? Give me a break. Grow up. Don't be a nationalist little monkey.

I was speaking out of concern because I have been in Information Security for about 6 years now and about 3/4 of all the larger network scans and exploit attempts I have seen have come from chinese IP space. Unfortunately, I did not know I had to spell it out so morons wouldn't get a brown streak in their underwear thinking I am all anti-chinese.

So right now, you look like the complete Internet retard for trying to make a witty retort without even understanding the parent. You have one chance to redeem yourself by explaining how "Blocking does nothing". That is the very thing a firewall does and I would like for you to explain to all of us who have been running BSD and Linux for the last decade have been wasting our time with filters on routers, firewalls and various other security measures.

I think libertarian/capitalist economic philosiphies (in the raw) apply very well to the world of software distribution. Once the lowest common denominator stops buying your service, then you will have to adjust or step aside while someone else takes your place. Of course, by buying service we mean to "accept the spyware", and everyone hates that stuff as much as spam. There is no way the general public will play along with spyware for very long. Something will give, and it will give fast. My prediction is that Google will jump out there with a instant messenger client and the public's trust will be restored for approx 2.5 years. At that time, Google's investors will start demanding a larger return on the company's dwindling profits due to critical flaws in their advertising methods. A new Google will emerge, bursting at the seams with spyware, questionable deals with offshore spam sites, at least one executive money laundering scandal, and unblockable popup ads like the world has never seen.

The reason why "more decentralized open standards for IM" aren't useful is because people aren't unhappy with this FREE (well, ad supported) service. If there were a monopoly, people would not be able to change to an alternative, as was the case with cable providers before the days of digital satellite. You can simply install MSN and talk a friend or two into joining you there. Big deal, most people run more than one messenger anyway.

There are many kinds of drugs and an entirely different type of individual may participate in the distribution of hemp than deals with more dangerous, neighborhood destroying chemicals like meth. One is your school teacher, airline pilot, real estate agent, and the guy at the music shop. The other, is a much more dangerous person who deals constantly with people who are hardcore addicted to the things he is distributing. With the hemp dealer, if he is a dick, then nobody will deal with him. Hemp isn't addictive so there is no drive for someone to purchase from a less-than quality individual they trust and like.

Even when you come down hard on the bad meth dealer, he will immediately be replaced by someone else. That is because his clients don't have the option to think "hmm, this guy is a prick and wants me to do bad things, so I am going to wait until I see Tom next week" because addictions like meth can be very powerful and bring on boughts of depression, etc. Yes, toss these types in jail but leave the accountant or soccer mom who sells herb to a few friends with arthritis and HIV alone already, god damn it. They are just doing it to save a few bucks on their own stash by buying in the tinyest of distribution quantities and serving "real crime" time from it.

How about we stop picking on the hemp people, legalize it, tax it, then use the funds for medical research and addiction study. I can't see the long-term being more harmful than what? obesity and laziness? Hell, over half the country has that problem without being introduced to illegal drugs.
