  1. Is this what you are looking for? on Linux-to-Palm Integration? · · Score: 4, Informative

    http://pilot-link.org/

pilot-link is a suite of tools used to connect your Palm or PalmOS® compatible handheld with Unix, Linux, and any other POSIX-compatible machine. pilot-link works with all PalmOS® handhelds, including those made by Handspring, Sony, and Palm, as well as others. pilot-link includes userspace "conduits" that allow you to syncronize information to and from your Palm device, as well as libraries of Palm-compatible functions that allow other applications to take advantage of the code included in pilot-link. There are also several language "bindings" that allow you to use your favorite development language with pilot-link, such as Java, Tcl, Perl, and Python.

  2. Interesting Concept, but needs moderation on Command Line for the Web · · Score: 4, Insightful

I like the concept, however the premise is the flaw. What I mean by this is that the social concept of letting people add their own commands is the biggest draw, but the biggest flaw. Doing a quick ls on the site reveals such choice commands on the first page:

    p Created 2005-06-20 16:21 - Description - Nominate - www.pogo.com --does nothing

    tiki Created 2005-06-20 15:10 - Description - Nominate - http://www.tehanitrading.com/ --takes you to somone's website only

And then of course you have the sophisticated ones:

    fuckthefucker Created 2005-06-20 12:55 - Description - Nominate - http - does nothing

And if you try to create a legitimate command and something like "p" is already taken you are out of luck. This is why you will need someone to moderate it from time to time (this is sort of on the to do list by flagging spam commands, but it looks like they also have a potential problem with bot submissions as well). But, once you do this then you get the problem of my command is better than your command. It would be nice to see an individual implementation whereby you could store your own commands and could "share" them with others.

So maybe the correct conclusion is not that bigger is better, but only the sections that matter. Remember, its not the size of the wand, its the magic in it that counts.

  5. Dreamweaver; if you want flexibiltiy on Best Web Authoring Application? · · Score: 1

I use this tool to do a lot of work. It is very flexible in that it allows you to split the graphical and code parts so whatever you need to do you can edit and go back and forth with. It also integrates well with backend databases for testing and can help with some of the scripting languages as well. However, you can't program in ASP.NET, ASP, Cold Fusion, PHP, etc. with Dreamweaver if you don't know how to do it to begin with.

As with other programs Dreamweaver also has an integrated ftp function and also you to sync files. It will also upload dependant files. Some other features include a sophisticated CSS interface and support, secure ftp and cross browser checks. And it allows you to import Microsoft Word and Excel files. Dreamweaver has a free trial. Try it, you will like it.

  7. There is a problem with blacklists on Paul Graham Describes Dangers of Spam Blacklists · · Score: 5, Insightful

We deal with this all the time. Leaving any IP on a blacklist for any period of time doesn't help. Most spammers nowdays spam and run. They unload from a hacked account through a broken formmail script or a zombie computer. After 36 hours they have dumped their million emails and moved on to another IP. Blacklists generally don't get this though. They just make a bigger and bigger list. The problem with this approach is that they already missed the spammer. One time we dealt with someone who was running a blacklist and when we asked why an IP was on the list they said because it spammed years ago. When we said we have controlled the IP for the past three years they said it doesn't matter. It's like give me a break...

The solution to blacklists is to use an AOL model in which dynamic IP blocking is used. When spam is noted from an IP that IP is automatically blocked for 24-36 hours after the last spam comes in. That way the innocents are not being blocked and the spammers email doesn't make it through. There are a couple blacklists which do this but more should.

Compare this to the opposite blacklists like BLARS which requires a thousand dollars for "him" to investigate whether an IP should be removed. I have never seen an IP which is not listed with BLARS.

This is actually the point. The post is not meant to be trollful (is that a word?) but to posit one possibly strategy.

Hiring the key person from another company is nothing new for business; it has been happening since the beginning of time.

I do not think this one hire will cripple the open source movement, nor Gentoo. But you have to look at the plain logical move--if Microsoft did hire a lot key people it is not so much a blow to open source but another marketing ploy for them.

They can now go around and say we hired x who developed this. We are now taking the brightest and they are developing for us, not them. Then when they go to present a product they can say they have the best of both worlds--longevity with the Windows developement team and the integration of the best and brightest of the open source movement. They then can do a direct comparison of products and say their development team is better, therefore the product is better. (Yes, there are rebuttals to this logical thinking, but marketing is not necesarily logical or truthful).

That being said, FreeBSD is not all bad. The 4.* series clearly is a top notch OS. I have seen the 4.* take slashdot-type spikes of traffic as a server and not blink an eye when similiar linux based OS have crumbled.

To be honest the main purpose of the letter is that it holds more material inside than a postcard and whatever is inside is sealed up not so much for the content but to insure the contents are not lost; something TCP/IP takes care of but not the Post Office.
