Oddly enough, I just recievedd my first phishing attempt recently. It might have worked, but for two things. The page looked totally legit, right down to the avoid online fraud bit. The things that made me think it was a phishing attempt were the fact that I don't have a Washington Mutual account, so they wouldnt send me an email, and the fact that it went to 211.121.x.x, rather than the URL. I recently got online checking with my new bank, but I wont ever click a link to get there.

  6. Economics on Free Wi-Fi Threatened? · · Score: 1

If I remember correctly the things it takes for something to be a public good are that: Prvate industry wouldnt do it, or would do it poorly was in there somewhere but the actual ones 1. The beenefit to each individual is less than the cost that each would have to pay if it were provided priavately, and 2. the total benefits to society are greater than the total cost. A road meets these qualifications, Free wifi, probably not. Private industry already does this. the benefit to the individual is questionable, if everyone in the city used WIFI it would be terribly slow, and a state-run ISP would be a terrible cost to the taxpayers, and would effect even those who don't use the service. The total benefits to society are probably less than the cost, as it's not necessary for anything for people to be online.

  10. It's all about the Bases on Experts Suggest Replacing Definition of Kilogram · · Score: 1

The only reason that the metric system is better is because it uses base-10 to convert between units, to convert from inches to feet to yards to miles one has to multiply by 12, 3 and 1760. TO convert from centimeters to meters to kilometers one has to multiply by 100 and 1000 you tell me which you'd prefer to do? Measures of volume in the American(had to refrain from calling it the idiot system as one of my teachers did) system make more sense, they are basically base-2, but they throw quarts in just to throw you off. Whereas metric is base-10 again. As you say, there is no inborn sense of which is better insofar as you can't instinctively measure one more easily, unless you are a dead king. However it is much easier for a human to multiply by 10 rather than 12 or 3 or, heaven forbid, 1760. The other good thing about the metric system is that if you dont know how to convert between two units, you can tell pretty easily, assume you dont know anything about mass measurements, if I tell you to convert from grams to kilograms, you are much more likely to be able to do it than ounces to pounds. I have the conversion factors memorized for weight, for, uh, reasons. I guess metric Isn't better, but it is much easier.

I, for one, think that this is the worst idea possible, do you want someone to be able to see everywhere you go, where you are at any given time? If It were to be required i would definately find some lead plates and surround the reciver with them. This makes me paranoid, especially given that i am watching 1984 at the moment.

If we spent as much on colonizing other planets as we spend on missile defense we could do this pretty easy, and screw international cooperation. Think about it this way, if Russia, or China launches nuclear weapons at the US, we blow up Earth from our mars colony. Thats more effective than trying to defend one pile of rock in the earth. Would anyone mess with you if you didn't care about the planet as a whole and they all depended on it?

Although it seems to me that our descendents on mars will be reading an article in 100 years that says that one star lifeforms are doomed to extinction.
