Operational amplifiers ( analog compter) could easily replace the computer systems that operate the engines and transmissions of automobiles. Problem for the Dealer/manufacturer is they can easily be adjusted by a screw driver and oscilloscope and Digital Voltmeter. After all they cannot supply the puter with data because all the sensors are analog & have to be converted to digital for the computer. Take ____________ out of your car to the dealer for reprogrammiing and they will glad exchange yours for a "new" one. You have to fill in the blank because each manufacturer has a different name for the black box that controls the basic functions.

Not surprised, I worked in the VA.gov. I had to send specific print jobs to specific printers. If that particular printer broke down. The procedure was to call the Monday to Friday PAC (a semi computer literate chosen by the fem stud division chief, because she needed the 10% extra salary to feed her children) & then she would call the IT department after scratching her head for an hour. Lets say it was Friday, IT dept rep would look the job over & decide a new printer was required. On they way out I would say why don't you just reboot the print server 1st or reconfigure printer B to do the job. Then I would get the your really are crazy look & he/she would slither off down the hallway to the IT department. I would come in Saturday & the boss would tell me it was still messed up. I would then go over to printer B reconfigure it to accept the jobs. The jobs that were intended for printer B could done on printer C without changes. I would tell him use printer C for his other reports. On Sunday evening I would set the printer back to the original setting. The weekend super would not say anything because he needed the printer also for his job. Why all the song and dance. Because I was not qualified ( I was not someone's special friend or relative) I was not chosen & forbidden to change the printer settings. BTW A+, MCSE or CNE or miltary MOS were not considered qualifications to be considered 1st, before you picked the the curvy young black female to become a VA IT tech. I don't expect that any other government department is ran differently. In the entire 11 years I worked there the IT department could not figure out how to configure Richo office machines to be used as printers, and it took 8 years to figure out what the machine's phone thingy was for. They were always whining about paper consumption, but did not know how to set up access codes to the machine. Are you surprised the government is broke & your taxes are high & going higher? As for hiring contractors, after they gone, those same "qualified individuals" will bullox it up & then won't call the contractor back because the project funding has mismanaged.

There is a big difference in DoD vs VHA. In all the DoD situations there is more dedication to duty. Was this productive visiting in the VHA? Most of the time it was just the gossip manure spreader making the rounds. Refrigeration units down and repaired into the junk pile. There is a current project that was scheduled to be in place at the end of this month after 9 months of prep. That project is on delay. Ready in Nov 5 of this year?. The 3 year warranty for the equipment purchased for this project will probably expire before it is ever plugged in. Now she does not know what the equipment is for, how it is supposed to be placed, its' limitations and capabilities. The two people who know something about it will retire soon. 5 days for IM to produce a command line script to change the format on a printer? When the same situation happened again on my days off (Thu & Fri). Saturday I came back on duty and did it same thing again. On Monday I let IM work on their solution. They never did find one. The mission specific printer got repaired faster. They never thought of asking me how I did it. Probably because my boss told them I did not know what I was doing & I was full of useless information. I never seen that QUANTITY and quality of activity in any of the DoD operations I was involved with. I am gladly retired from that mess These always apper. Telecommuting? Back in the bad old days, when we fought a war in asia and put a man on the moon and balanced the budget. ok why not, lets do 1969. example: In 1969 a brand new chevy impala had a sticker price of $3200. For that price you got the optional v8, automatic transmission, power steering, power brakes, radio, heater, white sidewall tires and AC. with $900 down you paid $120 per month for 3 years and 4 years later you sold it for $1000. The deal is that 55% of the cost to manufacture that car was labor. Now who do suppose paid more income tax? GM or collectively the workers who made the cars? BTW unlike the Teir 2 UAW worker on the the GM assembly line today, buying a new Chevy Impala every 3 years is a BIG strain on the wallet. The 1969 car payment was one weeks pay + the 60 left over dollars would fill up the grocery cart and feed a house of 4 for 1 week. Plus U could take the wife and kiddes to the Drive In and still have enought to fill up the 25 gallon tank. BTW these workers did not live in GM owned 6000 sq ft houses near the Milford proving grounds like some of the Senoir execs did. Drive their choice of new every year Bonneville. Buick 225, Buick Rivera, Coup Deville. Olds 98, or Chevy Caprice (slumming it) for a $25 mo leasing fee + 1 more luxury car for the old lady, and if the kids were older than 16, lease a Camaro for each of them and GM would pick up the bill for the insurance. Some how these execs managed to make ends meet on a mere $100,000 yearly salary. The assembly worker was making 3.70 per hr. and time and half for over time. If they were not working 58 hours a week or more they were laid off. In 1972 I paid out more dollars in income tax as assembly line worker, than President Nixon did as President. As for the stars we will go there when a group of billionaires figure out how trillions can be made for each of them for going there. Of course they wont wait very long for the pay off.
