It is not suprising. Any technology in beginning was weak - for example cars slower than humans, computer "go" game loses to medium amateurs and so on. Even today most complex "AI" existing ever is many, many folds stupider than human. But it will change.

It seems to be bug in game. Sometimes they thinks that you betray someone, but in fact you betray no one! This really sucks, especially later in game. (betrayers got virtually no longterm trade)
You know, humanity asked "should we play God" many, many, many times. Do we have right to preform dissection? Appying vaccine? Construct cars? Moving in great speed? Flying?
All of these things above (and many, many more) was argued in past by humans like you.
