With all these consoles coming out in such a spread-out schedule, I wonder if it will be possible for anyone to keep the hype up.

In a sort of hacker equivalent of the Ford-versus-Chevy rivalry, BSD guys make fun of Linux on message boards and Web sites, the gist being that BSD guys are a lot like Linux guys, except they have kissed girls
Interesting article...but it seemed to fail to mention one important dynamic.
As time passes, operating systems and applications become progressively larger and more complex, requiring correspondingly more robust hardware to run on. I doubt that the 'entry level PC' (whatever that means) of a year ago is equal to the 'entry level PC' of today.
That's insightful??

I have an ATI IGP in my emachine Laptop. I don't mind integrated video cards, I just wish the DRI/OpenGL stuff would work. I used to have a Via TwisterK that was the same way. You have to search all over the place and find a patch, build you own XServer modules, etc, and then you can finally have 3D support. To me, just provide basic 3D support for these IGP cards so I can play the awesomely fabulous TuxRacer!!!!! (p.s., I fragged a snowball once...)
Last time I used a wireless combo, you could not use the keyboard and mouse simultanously (e.g., shift_drag to recycle bin). Is this still the case with newer wireless combos?
This reminds me of when Mandrake forked from Redhat. Initially the RPM packages were fairly interchangeable. Eventually I learned to only use actual Mandrake RPMs on Mandrake. Somehow, the world kept turning...
I bought a PII-266 Compaq Armada with 128MB Ram and a 3.8 GB HD on Ebay and I'm running Mandrake on it. It cost $99.95 (including shipping). It's my sub-100 laptop and it works just fine, thnak you.
I downloaded Cloudscape and started the install. I had to read the license before proceeding. I found it absolutely incomprehensible. Is this a license for personal use? Do I have to pay for distributing it with my app? What if I set it up as a server db via networking? More licenses? I could not figure out what I was obtaining. It CERTAINLY was not 'free' software.
What people are paying for is IMAP access to their webmail. I would pay for IMAP access to my yahoo account. I have a 2GB Yahoo account, but it is VERY clunky to access this through the web interface. I do not want to POP3 this information to a local computer (even with 'leave on server'), but just access it via IMAP in my client of choice. Forget Outlook, I think people like Yahoo, Gmail, etc. should offer IMAP access to their service. This would be similar to accessing Netscape.net account with the Netscape client, and Hotmail.com through the Outlook Express client (and now Hotmail.com through Outlook), but work with ANY client on ANY platform. For me, that would rock, and I would pay for it.

On the other hand the "Entry level PC" of ten years ago is the handheld mobile phone of today.
Yeah, yesterday I saw a guy holding one of those up to his head while he was driving. I noticed the caps locks key was on...

Strangely, as the man was being escorted out of the store, the clerk was heard to say, "Would you like a service contract with that..."
Well, Mandrake was going to merge with Linspire, but the name ManSpire was to0 risky...
Me thinks there's gonna be a whole lotta Splodin' goin' on that day. Should be at least as fun as that why-too-kay thang.
I knew I shouldn't have listened to that agent...
