Ah, but what you forget is that this IS the sideshow/carnival. If the people are up in arms over some war a third of the way around the world, they tend to forget about issues that are a little closer to home.
At my college, the adage is "social life/friends, grades, sleep". Of course, most people don't know they're allowed 2 choices. Everybody goes for grades hardcore. Amazing how silly my fellow engineers can be.
Going to college to learn things..... Golly, what'll they think of next?
But I think it is commonly recognized that a rewording transforms sufficiently a work.
Says who? Lester, of the infamous Lester's Guide that I hated from around 5th grade thru speech class in college, in all His glorious versions, says otherwise. According to Him, all sources must be cited. Even just a paraphrase. My friend failed his senior paper for far less than that.
Acceptable (with the whole link later in a sources cited page): Yvanhoe, in his comment on www.slashdot.com, says that if you just take text straight from a document, you must cite it.
Unacceptable: It isnt really settled how much you need to re-word someones writing before it becomes your own.
nah, people here are just geeks in general. Thus mechanical engineers arent entirely out of the allowed crowd, just not the main group.
now if he was in marketing or something, that'd be a little wierd. but engineers are just as geeky/nerdy as you crazy computer foklks.
actually, i'm pretty sure that the AC is correct.
Searching google (the almighty, the all-powerful), for "The best defense is a good offense" and "The best offense is a good defense" yields 30,400 hits for the former and only 5,340 for the latter. By far, the AC has the most popular of the two phrases.
And if you think about it, the same holds true in real life. If you kick someone's ass before they kick yours, they cannot hurt you. Thus you are defended. If you, instead, only defend when attacked, you can never conquer. Thus your attack has failed.
As to your other point, these developmnts are completely defense related. The above arguement aside, an autonomuous SUV can as easily be used in Kansas or Arizona as in Iraq. All this is is a car that drives itself. While this is quite a complicated task, having no driver in a car does not suddenly make this an attack only vehicle.
I've most of my friends have had the same problem, from big places like Purdue to tiny little colleges all over.
oh yeah, i almost forgot. ANN ARBOR'S A WHORE!!!!!
Now, I would agree with you that better education is needed, and certainly more important than getting everyone good internet.
This means that, of the 4 options presented, the only good one was education. Sadly, pouring money into education can only do so much. In the cases where the schools cannot pay for necessities, this will greatly improve everything, and I do beleive that teachers need to be paid more. But neither of those will probably make the kids that i hope to one day enjoy making end up smarter.
I gotta agree with a few of the chaps furthur up. Healthcare isn't really all that wanted by a lot of people. I can assure you that my grandparents that grew up without healthcare ended up far healthier than my grandparents with it.
Now, I would agree with you that better education is needed, and certainly more important than getting everyone good internet. If the money is that tight, you can always leave the science to foreigners.
I worked in a computer lab at my highschool, and about a month before i left someone spilled a mixture of Soy Sauce and Pepsi on one of the computer keyboards.
three days in a row.
For once, something that went wrong in that hellhole wasnt my fault. It's too bad i still had to try to fix it.
Where did the GP say that political orientation affects ability?
What he is saying is that the government is choosing representatives that agree with its own views. Would expect people to vote for, say, a senator who does not represent their views? I wouldn't.
Its the same with the government. All our President has done is selected people who he thinks will present his views best.
As President, it is his job to determine what is best for the country, and do everything he can to make sure that comes about.
The GP is not defending President Bush's selction criteria (nor am I); all he is doing is defending the President's right to make those selections.
