... Google has a very different business approach.
Microsoft is what I would call a 'classic' company with a bureaucracy, top-down decisions and promotions based on immediate success or failure of projects and it is believed in such model that you should squeeze everything you can (12 hours work for 8 hours pay, pushing 3 months projects to finish in 3 weeks) from your underlings. The problem is that the model doesn't scale very well, as soon as your top-down gets long (look at IBM), things start to get slow and more paperwork is generated to get the same job done. If you widen to scale, your set of underlings get so large so they are unmanageable, and since the overlords try to squeeze everything from the underlings, not or poorly managed underlings tend to squeeze as much out of the perks given by the overlords (Newton's law of physics apply in this model)
Google is a 'young' company. They have a young mindset, they are rebels, think the rules don't apply to them and base their business model on this. I don't know whether that is going to be successful. They change the way they do business with their underlings, the underlings are happier because they don't get squeezed as much. Also, a void is created/forced (20% of time) where the other business model would apply a positive action to work harder, and thus again, according to Newton, an opposite reaction is going to generate more revenue from those underlings because the underlings feel they owe it to their overlords (of course you always have rotting apples in the orchard). It's also psychologically proven that if you're happier and less stressed, you tend to get more work done in the same amount of time. Of course, if the model can stand time, hype and shareholders mindset over the next few years is yet to be proven.
No, seriously, some engineers are working on a plan for Google World Domination (I don't know whether it's going to remain Beta) including a Google (Moon)Base and more... that they're working on free wireless for everybody and/or a phone doesn't surprise me.
PAM is something completely different than SELinux. PAM tries to give you pluggable authentication modules through the same interface (kinda like a general API for Unix/Linux authentication). If you are a programmer, whether the end user uses a local username, LDAP or MySQL for authentication, you have to write only 1 authentication option in your program to authenticate.
SELinux is a type of MAC architecture for Linux. It enforces the actual security on objects based on their policy, defined separately from the object. If a user creates or accesses an object, it will enforce the least privileges on the object based on the SELinux policy.
They should get rid of the speedometer too, that way I have an excuse when the cop pulls me over and asks how fast I was going. Really, I constantly have to check if I'm not over the speed limit whenever my radar detector alerts me of the local cop in the ditch. That is really unsafe when driving 100MPH. Actually, they should get rid of traffic cops all together, they could do a better job looking for terrorists and drugs.
If I was backpacking, first of all, I wouldn't really need a large MacBook, I have a 12" PowerBook whilst I consult in a different city than my home and that is big enough, I couldn't imagine lugging a 15" or 17" machine especially whilst travelling.
What I would do, if you have the funds available is get a hand-held computer that can double as and/or interface with a cell phone (GSM for abroad, IR (yuck) or BT), a GPS device (either Bluetooth or built-in, tethered is a nuisance) and e-mail/internet software (using WiFi or the cell phone modem, depending on where you go. Make sure it supports Asian/European/American frequencies)
Well, I don't know if there's any programs you could help him on... if you really cared. The problem is nobody does, and quite frankly I don't either. The guy probably has been on those programs and either couldn't or wouldn't cut it, he might have made some stupid decisions or forced into a bad situation. I am happy I have not, and if that day ever comes, I hope my smarts can get me out of those situations fairly quick.
If there is no hope, a simple solution is to euthanize him with a 9mm, not that anyone would care, but all of sudden you would be the bad guy on the news for killing the poor helpless, homeless person and you would probably get more jail time than when you would kill your wife or boss. After the news is done, still no-one would care to protect those persons nor give them food, shelter or money.
The world's fucked up, nothing we can do about it (anymore), not even as a collective. I call for a few days of total anarchy and let evolution do it's work, that is if Darwin's theory was right and only the strongest (and thus the persons that wouldn't ever be homeless) would survive. Real life teaches other wise, the person with the best charisma and not the strongest nor the smartest do survive in an anarchistic situation by feeding on our incentive to form groups, bands and our 'need' to belong somewhere and be appreciated for what you do by the majority as well as exploiting the less intelligent as body count. The charismatic person then surrounds itself with the smarter and stronger, while the real smart and real strong persons think they can cut it on their own, but really can't, but don't want to admit it.
I don't know if any of my above theories are correct, but hey, it's my view of life and I am willing to accept if you have a different view, but I think I got a point.
And there are quite some solutions to it. One of them (I think this is the one we're talking about) is converting the characters to ASCII and serialize them. Quite simple, let the browser do it.
The main reason you should refuse to adopt Open XML is because it is not 'OPEN' in the true sense of the word. If you read Groklaw's points on it, you'll notice that the current format is closed but there is a 'covenant not to sue', the problem is that as soon as you (the programmer or your company, or OOo) extends the format or Microsoft comes along and extends or changes the format slightly for Office 2008, all those license and covenants go down the drain and the format becomes closed again, but then it will be a closed ISO standard.
There are people believing that we will be living under water in one or more big 'Atlantis'-type quarters within 20-200 years. Quite interesting to hear the possibilities and ideas.
NFSv4 with Kerberos and LIPKEY. There ya go... much more secure, and faster too, my own experience tells me that it can easily go 50% faster compared to the same data over SMB.
The great thing is that the iPhone is based on the GSM technology. This means that it uses a SIM card for identification and connection to the network.
If you want another provider, switch the SIM card and go for it. All other US providers have a locked phone for CDMA networks, which means that you can't just switch providers and keep your phone.
The iPhone will not be locked down like most other phones here in the States, and GSM is widely used in Europe too, for exactly that reason, possibility of choice. That's probably why Apple went with Cingular for promotional reasons. If the customer wants, they can switch providers, or let the user switch.
I would just put it out, worry about legalities later. And why didn't you choose for open software in the first place? There is OpenID which has far more support and possibilities and you won't have to worry about blessings by anyone.
It's the protocol, and he's darn right, you should be migrating away from it to a more open protocol like NFS or (S)FTP.
But putting it on Microsoft servers isn't a good answer either, Unix boxes have done it for years and are still good at it. If he's looking for simple and cheap, he shouldn't be looking at Microsoft, but at Apple. They have both software and hardware for cheap and large deployments and has seamless support for more than 5 protocols at the same time, with the same credentials.
And by the way, he's a VIP? Shouldn't that be a VP, they usually have no other information than what some marketing drone tells him. And I think he has some good intentions for his own wallet if he has been 'convinced' by Microsoft.
People that work should get paid according to their capabilities. If you have 2 math teachers and one doesn't know anything about it, and the other one has a doctorate, they should be getting paid accordingly. If I go to work, I get paid and I get a job because I have certain capabilities as a IT consultant. If another consultant comes in that doesn't know as much as I do, he either won't get the job, or will get paid much less.
I hate to see unions kill the 'free' job market for everyone and keeping our children dumb. You get paid according to your results, not according your title (although that ideology reverses itself throughout higher management). 'Think of the children', anyone, now you DO have a reason to and you don't.
And I would also like to see (more) practical mathematics in school. Currently most students get it shoved down their throats as a merely theoretical 'boring' lesson while mathematics has much more interesting and practical uses which during my time in school, I never or barely got to see (I got to see them a little in my practicum for electronics, but that's about it).
If the games become cheaper or free, I might agree, otherwise... no.
I don't own a console nor do I play commercial games, I think commercials might even augment a realistic game (as in racing) but I don't want real stuff that reminds me of this world in my fantasy game.

I thought Karma was the stuff you got for getting good modpoints. Mod me up, mod me up! Need karma!
Merchandising, merchandising, that's where the real money for the movie is made.

In this house we obey the law of thermodynamics.

induced current was about 9600 volts
That's probably why it didn't work then eh... somebody screwed up by using 2 different units in their calculations?
