Hmmm...that doesn't seem right. I am using the Thinkpad X40 which has a pretty similar configuration to the X41 except that mine has just 1.2 GHz. This is easily the best machine I've used. Even though it is not meant for gaming, I can easily play Age of Mythology on it. I have been using this machine for a year now, and I it has been simply superb. I never have less than 10 windows open and it handles it just fine.

I use it to play AOE2 online as well as work on my CS stuff which involves a lot of simulations. I run eclipse on it and once it's loaded, it runs smoothly. Oh...and another thing...this is as light as you can get...just 2.5 pounds which means you can carry it around really easily. In fact the X41 is what I plan to get once I graduate and get a job.

Given the very similar configs of my machine and the X41, I'm pretty sure those will be able to do a lot more than just email and note taking.

  24. A perfect teacher is a bad one on Improving Education? · · Score: 1

I've always thought that a teacher who explains everything perfectly is not really good for the students. Let me clarify. In my 8th grade we were introduced to Geometry. This involved calculating the areas of various figures using PI. This teacher taught us how to do so.
She taught us the steps to all calculations perfectly. After that class, the dumbest kids could calculate the areas of figures. However, noone knew what PI actually was. All I kept thinking was why did I have to use this PI and where did its value come from ? I failed the next exam based on that.
Because the teacher taught the class step by step, the students knew exactly what to do. They didn't have to think Sometimes, a not so good teacher will leave out holes in a student's knowledge. This will force the student to think. I had another teacher in Algebra who was really absent minded and forgot quite a few of the steps. This meant I had to fill in those gaps in my knowledge by thinking. I found I learnt a lot more problem solving in Algebra than in Geometry.

So what I really want to say is that from the student's perspective the teacher who seems to teach very well may not be the best one.

I presume you've never connected it to the Internet?
No, I can post to Slashdot via magical thought waves. As a matter of fact I've been online for over 6 months usually an average of 12 hours a day. I have to shut it down for some time as it's a laptop.

Also, my point about the applications was that there are free apps on the Windows platform too. One example of a paint program would be GIMP.
I concede you do have to reboot on installations and patches.I've done all the updates and no,it's not a dozen reboots as you claim. In fact I can't remember rebooting more than once on a Windows update.I've worked at a Tech School District office where I have updated Windows all over a school.Number of reboots = 1.And another for Novell Netware. So maybe max 2. Yes, I understand some people prefer Linux. I just wanted to point out that the reasons you give are not valid. Open source, free and no vendor lock-in are better reasons to do so.
