If it's a dual processor workstation you are looking for then the Sun Java W2100z should do it. Runs Solaris and Linux, Wouldn't want to slow it down with Windows.

Why is it that almost all of the web design "Best Practices" pages look like something written in 1996? How about clean, professional, shiny-new-looking design sites?

I found this site very informative when I was starting out, http://www.w3schools.com/default.asp. Everything from basic HTML (including XHTML, CSS and even learning TCP/IP) to XML, browser scripting, server scripting, .NET, multimedia and of course web building practices. There really is too much at this site to mention here. They also provide examples and self tests and have links to certifications in all areas they cover (for a small fee). Other than the certifications everything they offer that I have seen is totaly free.

I must agree here also, I worked as an automobile mechanic in a very dirty shop for several years while I was going to college. We used pc's to do things like order parts and look up technical information about jobs we where doing. Let me tell you brake dust is a very nasty thing.

    Some sudgestions I might make:

    1. You don't have to spend alot of money for fan filters. Use pantyhose, cut them to fit over your fans and rubberband them down around them leaving the exhaust side of the fan open then install them.
    2. Make sure you have more intake than exhaust, this creates a positive pressure within the pc itself and helps to keep the dust from creaping in throught the cracks.
    3. Deffinately use an optical mouse.
    4. Use a keyboard cover, http://www.datacal.com/dce/typing-cover-info.htm

The monitor is another story, someone earlier sudgested using one of those desks where the monitor mounts under the writing surface. This sounds like the best way to protect it in your situation although when sealing it off I would install a few fans because monitors can create a lot of heat (using the filtering methods I described earlier on all intake fans). Here I would also make sure I had positive air pressure or more intake than exhaust.

As for the cold, just leave the pc turned on that should be enough to keep it warm.

I can remember about ten or more years ago hearing about this concept. I want to say that I saw it first on Mr. Wizzard but I am not sure of that.

Aside from that it sounds like a great idea. Only feasible in smaller comute planes due to the weight limitations of larger aircraft.

  6. Re:yay! on $1 Billion Awarded in Lawsuit Against Spammers · · Score: 1
I found an interesting BLOG about the Deputy Communications Minister of Russia and what he did when he got tired of of getting spam from one obnoxious company. Seems he sent them back about 1000 automated voice messages, This was his plan:

    1. User gets a spam, greps for the spammer's phone number, and sends it (along with his own area code and exchange) to a server.
    2. The server searches the list of recent people who also forwarded spam who's own listed area/exchange is local to that of the spammer.
    3. The server sends out an email to *those* people telling them about their neighborhood spammer.
    4. Everyone local to that spammer then instructs their computer to dial that number occasionally and send them a warm personal greeting expressing their interest in their wares.

There are also a few ideas/sudgestions for doing this in a much larger scale.

You can read the full article here: http://www.tallent.us/blog/default.aspx?date=2003- 07-24#a6b033bc4-bc7b-48a8-968f-980f71662a5d

Also if you scroll down a few BLOGs you will find one titled "Study: Legislators are Pandering Idiots". It lays out a decent "anti spam" plan.

I was able to find a new messenger called Qnext that covers about anything you need, even p2p and video conferencing. Runs in windows, linux and there is a mac version coming soon. http://www.qnext.com/ It works quite well.
