    Somehow that doesn't sound like a very convincing argument we should give people more opportunities to mess up their car.

    I never said it was, I'm just saying I don't think it can be a whole lot worse then it is today. The "rotate your tires" crowd will probably never mess with the factory program and the chavs won't be able to add much more power just by tweaking the software. They'll probably do more stuff like turning the LED headlights into strobe lights or some crap like that.

    Maybe black on white just gives you such a huge afetrimage you don't regularly notice it?

    Or maybe the type of afterimage is different and doesn't affect reading.

    Whatever the reason, white on black=bad (and I'm sure I can't be the only one).

    Old-school research showed white on dark blue was easiest on most people's eyes.

    Maybe that was only true on CGA monitors...

    I dunno...but I DO know my eyes are funny for a few minutes after I try to read any amount of white-on-black text - it causes massive afterimage.

    (Yes, I have the "nostyle" Firefox plugin to deal with these websites)

    How is that worse than, eg., forgetting to put the wheel nuts back on after you rotated the tires?

    (And yes, you can get quite a distance with no wheel nuts before the wheel falls off - I've seen it done...)

    All the chavs of the world already know a guy who can install an illegal nitrous kit or whatever.

    Hardware upgrades scare me more than software upgrades. You're not going to get a massive increase in power through software alone. If they want to make their suspension more 'sporty' then it's their own spines that will suffer more than anything else.

    If the plan is to censor everything that somebody, somewhere finds offensive then we might as well just pull the plug and be done with it.

    Besides, kids have cellphones these days and are quite capable of making their own porn. Is that better than seeing what's on the internet?

    If we're worried about kids emulating what they see on the internet then what about the sites with videos of the Taliban cutting people's heads off? Porn=bad. Violence=good. Got it.

    If someone wants an NDA for an idea they'll be explaining over a cup of coffee to see what you think, they have an inflated concept of their ideas importance.

    By my experience: The more paranoid they are over disclosure, the more worthless their ideas are....

    NDA is really no big deal. Anything you bring to the table is still yours. It's also a very good way to get acquainted with potent ideas. When someone lacks an NDA, on the other hand, I tend to think they are not very serious.

    What if you sign it then he sits there and tells you something similar to what you're already planning to do? You're completely screwed.

    What never occurred to me was the business model idea behind Facebook, namely, selling the privacy of your clients to the highest bidder. It is, as you say, complete shit. But some people spend 16 hours a damn day there. Who knew, right?

    I don't think that was their business model from day one.

    (Even if it was, it's hardly novel - people have been buying/selling personal data for years).

    Ideas are a dime a dozen -- and most of them are worth far less than that.

    Here's what "idea guys" don't realize: Their idea is very unlikely to be unique. If it is, it's very likely to be complete shit.

    You go through a week of their hand wringing over whether to tell or not, you listen to a laughable pile of crap then be told "you better not tell anybody else!" (even after signing a legal document to that effect), then you spend the rest of your life hoping nothing you do is remotely similar to anything said in that meeting, (no matter how trivial/obvious). It's just not worth it. Ideas really are ten a penny, it's implementation/execution that counts.

    Yeah, but you still have to drop stuff from altitude and hope it hits the right spot.

    These days accuracy is far more important. Bunker busters have to be delivered right on the bunker and cruise missiles are a far better choice for buildings. In what situation does a B52 do anything better then those?

    Sorry, this is kind of off, but still interesting and related as this was work done by reverse engineering. How do you reverse engineer on Linux, or other UNIX systems like OS X and BSD? Windows has many great software like IDA and OllyDBG, but seems there's just no such things available for Linux or UNIX. The problem isn't even about using console programs, it's about showing the debugging process and being able to put breakpoints.

    Even if that was true... couldn't you do the reverse engineering on a Windows machine?

    I honestly don't buy the whole "war hero turned state trooper not knowing what to do" thing. Nobody can come up with a combination of factors that would lead to uncontrollably going 120mph. Lots of people have shown different ways those cars can be stopped even with the accelerator stuck down. He's disciplined to think under pressure, he had plenty of time to do something, on the 911 call he doesn't sound like he's panicking...so what gives? Was it a really bizarre suicide?

    Muggers and rapists have iPhones, right? Apple knows where they all are, right? So this isn't really too far fetched...they just need to hook up with Facebook profiles and pretty soon you'll be able to see everybody's personality icon floating next to them.

    Nothing about it makes sense to me. He had time to call 911 and talk for ages but not enough time to do any of the several things that would have stopped the car.
