Mac LC circa 1991! I guess this was renowned for being pretty crappy and limited but it was a lot of fun as a kid. I did have some earlier experiences at a friend's house who's dad worked for IBM. They had some 486's, 386's and a 286 in the garaged nicknamed "the dinosaur". They also had a cool "briefcase" sized computer with an orange screen. Can't remember if it was a 386 or 286, but was really heavy. Mostly played games and logged on to prodigy and downloaded low-res grainy nudes.
For me Perl is alive and well.

Perl 5.14 Released

· Score: 4, Informative
Despite what many are saying, Perl is still used extensively even for new projects. I use it daily, and while I really like ruby and python, for a variety of reasons, I have not switch away from Perl for most projects. My only question is when will Strawberry Perl 5.14 be released?
Ha, I have an Aeron chair at work and guess what, its not that great. I still get back pain sitting in it all day. I did not even notice it was one for about a month after I started. Those chairs are mostly hype. Many studies (and my personal experience) shows that the act of sitting on your ass all day is not good for you. Spending $700 on a chair will not fix the fundamental problem. I don't know how to improve the situation, except maybe having kids standing and using desks at arm level, but I don't think buying new chairs will help anyone except the furniture salesmen.
Hmm... I always thought that video games were designed to ESCAPE reality. You know... that reality that I suck at pretty much everything, and can never get ahead in? Of course I could be wrong about this... As I am usually wrong about everything else... Oh well, I'm gunna go play some video games now:)
I have heard for years about the "Digital Divide" that separates those with computer/internet access and those without. To offer multi level internet access would actually physically impose such a divide and make the internet a place for wealthy elitists. The low end internet would get worse and worse as companies wouldn't want to advertise to the people that don't have enough cash to get the higher level internet in the first place, thus you would get less content.
I doubt that Apple really wants Sun's Monolithic kernel. The dicision to use Mach was an architectual one, as they generally provide more stability. The trade off was made, slightly less performance for a more stable environment. This argument has exsisted for ages, but with todays modern speedy hardware, I believe Apple did the right thing in going their kernel.
I was gunna mod this something bad, but then I thought, if slashdot is gunna spam me with these crappy articles, people should make the most of it and spam with crappy offers.
I highly doubt the "governments of the world" will shut down potential colonization and exploitation of mars (if it ever becomes viable) especialy if money is concerned. Need an example? America... Your claim about environmentalist stoping a country from expanding to mars is completely wrong. Only in america and western european countries has environmentalism gaind a powerful foot hold, but hell, if we don't do it China Will! By the time a plan like this becomes possible China will be ten times more powerful than america and our little input wont matter. They will do whatever they want. Why does no one own Antarctica? because no body wants it! Do you want to live in Antarctica? Up until recently there were parts where no human has ever been! And by the way who do you think were the first people to visit those places, a group of chinese researchers! Humans have always expanded into new territories and this will be no different if it ever becomes viable.
Wow, TFA didn't mention Linux once, and the first post I see is flaming linux. You say linux Zealot this and linux Zealot that, well I say you are a Winodows Zealot. TFA is about open source software in general, most likely on the Windows platform. If you have a problem with Open source in general... then thats a whole different thing.
I like linux, I like windows. I just use them for what each does best.
Ahh, I just hate it when I hear people say this. That statement is pure BS. As if windows has some inate ability to do something better than Linux. Windows does not do ANYTHING best, it just forces the market into only working with it, plain and simple.
If I were to buy a laptop, it would not be an Apple Computer, cause I can't see why I should have one that would only run MacOS, when I am more into Linux. But I gotta admit they do look good, but question is; ain't they going to be a bit heavy?
Anyone ever think to maby put a second RJ-45 jack on the other side? it would still be small enough that it looks like a simple coupler, while you could haqve it sniffing network traffic, and if a internet connection is availible, it could send data back to you!
Login into the student Unix accounts, I see that the school runs Sun4 on their servers. The system is obviously oudated and probly a prime target for exploits. Its no surprise to me that this happened.
I was talking with my dad the other day. He gets tons of (real) junk mail every day and is tired of it. I believe that the postal code allows you to refuse incoming mail and they will ship it back to sender. I told him that he should do that with every piec of junk mail he gets to prove a point. Maby they would stop sending it to him if they think the address is no longer occupied?
If this is true, It is a great step for Yahoo. I have tried to move everyone I know to firefox, including my mom. The only thing that was holding my mom back from completely using firefox was yahoo's online streaming music radio. Maby finally she can dump IE once and for all!

I think the movie twister had a larger budget than this.

Um, if you are so into linux, you should know that you can run linux on a mac, and quite well. Even Linus torvalds himself uses a mac now. http://linux.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=05/03/09

This has to be the biggest DUPE in history! .... second to that World War 1 and World War 2 thing... how unoriginal :)
