    I don't fully get that 'square of the velocity' bit; doesn't that depend on what unit the velocity is in?

    Back in drivers ed the instructor had us calculate it based on miles per hour; but there isn't any special physics constant about 'miles' or 'hours'

    So, imagine hitting something at 1 MPH, squared to 1, or the same velocity 46284480 feet per year, squared to 214225308000000?

    I would guess that's supposed to be calculated in terms of the speed of light (only constant non-zero velocity I know of).

    But no matter what unit, the effect is still squared: 2x the speed, 4x the impact; 10x the speed, 100x the impact...

    Which is why going shopping for personal toiletries with me is some peoples version of hell, because I do read the ingredients of every item, calculate the unit cost (and may stores that posts unit quantities in different measures for the same product type (volume vs. weight) die in flames.) compare to store brands, etc.

    I recently realized, advertizing is targeted at people that advertizing works on. Us techie types are more methodical and logical that average, we want specs, facts, and figures; we would never buy something just because Justin Beiber endoses it; but there exists people who would; and this is utterly incomprenible to us as our unfashionable clothes are to them.

    A while back I was doing testing on a DEC Alpha machine that had a BIOS based boot menu.

    I needed to install multiple OS's (Windows NT english, german, japanese...) when I added the 5th or so OS, the machine died since the boot options overflowed into other data, corrupting the bios settings, requiring re-flash of the settings to factory defaults. (I vaguely recall having to set a jumper, but it was a long time ago)
