  2. Re:Why is it a shame? on Democrats Take House, Senate Undecided · · Score: 3, Insightful

I understand your sentiment, and partially agree. It just seems bad that it's either a system where a 25% vote wins, or a system where you have one of two choices, neither of which are good, but people feel like they must pick a "lesser of two evils". Ours is a system where there very well could be a "perfect leader" out there, a man of the people, who would never see the light of day because he doesn't play the games the Big Two do.

Maybe I'm just too cynical....it all reminds me of the Simpsons episode where they had to vote between the two aliens....it's funny and sad because it's true.

  3. Re:Not a A Macacaphonic Chorus on Democrats Take House, Senate Undecided · · Score: 3, Interesting

It's a shame that we live in a matter of state where people have to say "don't vote for the candidate you support because it splits the vote, and in turn the guy both of us oppose will win". You should pick who you want, based on your criteria, and let the chips fall where they may.

Speaking of, why does the Green Party get so much support as opposed to the Libertarians (which from what I can tell, seem much more "mainstream" in that if you asked someone their thoughts, would probably fall in line with them)?

  6. Why not better commercials? on How MythTV Detects and Flags Commercials · · Score: 1

We clamor for better content in movies and TV shows, along with other entertainment. Why not push for better advertising content quality? Yes, when I record something on my MythTV box, I skip the ads. It's a godsend - especially when you want to watch the latest Real World/Road Rules challenge and you don't want to spend 30 minutes watching the 6 minutes of content. Even better is the torrents of CSI - HD recordings with the commercials already cut. Sweet! But I watch a lot of real-time TV, too.

Back to my original point....among all the trash out there is always a few gems, commercials that get it right, that are funny, unique, etc., that people actually talk about. It's not limited to just Superbowl ads, either. The beer manufacturers can do it, why can't everyone else? Maybe we'd be more inclined to not skip ads if we had a reason to watch them? I think everyone is just tired of watching the same ad spot, over and over and over, for weeks at a time. Why not shoot for a memorable ad instead of repeatedly bashing you over the head with the same crappy one?

  7. What about quality? on EMI Exec Says 'The Music CD is Dead' · · Score: 3, Interesting

If not for CDs, where do I get "original" quality for my digital rips? I don't care about extras on CDs and crap. And yes, when I get my new CD home, I rip it, and really, the MP3s are the only method I actually listen to the music. But I like being able to a)know that I can rip the tracks at whatever bitrate and whatever method I want, and b)the original "master" recording is still sitting there on my shelf.

If the CD goes away, where will the baseline of quality be? Will 128k be where the bar is set?

  8. Inconcievable! on IE Sends Cake to Firefox 2 Team · · Score: 1

FF: All right. Where is the poison? The battle of wits has begun. It ends when you decide and we both eat, and find out who is right... and who is dead.
IE7: But it's so simple. All I have to do is divine from what I know of you: are you the sort of man who would put the poison into his own cake or his enemy's? Now, a clever man would put the poison into his own cake, because he would know that only a great fool would reach for what he was given. I am not a great fool, so I can clearly not choose the cake in front of you. But you must have known I was not a great fool, you would have counted on it, so I can clearly not choose the cake in front of me.
FF: You've made your decision then?
IE7: Not remotely. Because iocane comes from Australia, as everyone knows, and Australia is entirely peopled with criminals, and criminals are used to having people not trust them, as you are not trusted by me, so I can clearly not choose the cake in front of you.
FF: Truly, you have a dizzying intellect.
IE7: Wait til I get going! Now, where was I?
    FF: Australia.
IE7: Yes, Australia. And you must have suspected I would have known the powder's origin, so I can clearly not choose the cake in front of me.
    FF: You're just stalling now.
IE7: You'd like to think that, wouldn't you? You've beaten my giant, which means you're exceptionally strong, so you could've put the poison in your own cake, trusting on your strength to save you, so I can clearly not choose the cake in front of you. But, you've also bested my Spaniard, which means you must have studied, and in studying you must have learned that man is mortal, so you would have put the poison as far from yourself as possible, so I can clearly not choose the cake in front of me.
FF: You're trying to trick me into giving away something. It won't work.
IE7: IT HAS WORKED! YOU'VE GIVEN EVERYTHING AWAY! I KNOW WHERE THE POISON IS!
    FF: Then make your choice.
IE7: I will, and I choose - What in the world can that be?
IE7: [IE7 gestures up and away from the table. FF looks. IE7 swaps the cakes]
FF: What? Where? I don't see anything.
IE7: Well, I- I could have sworn I saw something. No matter.First, let's eat. Me from my cake, and you from yours.
    FF, IE7: [they eat]
    FF: You guessed wrong.
IE7: You only think I guessed wrong! That's what's so funny! I switched cakes when your back was turned! Ha ha! You fool! You fell victim to one of the classic blunders! The most famous is never get involved in a land war in Asia, but only slightly less well-known is this: never go in against a Sicilian when death is on the line! Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! Ha ha ha...
IE7: [IE7 stops suddenly, and falls dead to the right]
Opera: And to think, all that time it was your cake that was poisoned.

It'd be even better if there was a comparison of the two to commercial offerings like MS SQL Server.

Specifically, I'm interested in the possibility of developing ASP.NET apps with a F/OSS database backend. It looks like both MySQL and Postgre have .NET connectors available, so I wouldn't have to use the generic ODBC drivers. But is there a good rundown of features, speed comparisons, and other things that would help? Thanks for any pointers!
