  1. How Firefox Adoption Effects Linux/*BSD Adoption on Firefox Continues to Bite into IE Usage · · Score: 1

In my experiences with users, I have noticed you almost never see a user go from using MSIE/Outlook and Windows to migrate to *BSD or Linux. It seems an MSIE/Outlook Windows user will migrate to Firefox (typically) for their browser. Then, they will migrate to Thunderbird or gmail. After that, they get interested in Linux (it seems almost impossible to explain to them about the *BSDs). Based on this logic, I think Firefox (and sometimes Thunderbird) is where the migration to OSS starts for the typical user. For corporations, this may be different because Firefox is harder manage using traditional means (no group policies), but I think you could have a bunch of X terminals setup to go to one machine and one Firefox installation instance for all users of a particular group on *nix.

  2. This is good but... on Firefox Continues to Bite into IE Usage · · Score: 2, Insightful

I am worried about the future. With IE7 on it's way, is this going to slow down the adoption of Firefox by the masses? Is Microsoft going to start advertising everywhere that IE7 is on the way so users will think "Nevermind Firefox, I can just use IE6 because IE7 will be out soon and it will work better with my sites"? (re: vapourware effect, not that I don't think Microsoft won't release it) Also, the bug that causes the user to lose the entire contents of their hard disk drive while uninstalling Firefox 1.0 is worrysome. But I've warned all my coworkers, relatives and friends (who run Firefox 1.0) to not upgrade by uninstalling and installing Firefox 1.01.

  3. What Can Google Do? on 'Online Poker' Googlebomb · · Score: 1, Redundant

I'm hoping Google will improve their GoogleBot so that sites that Google bomb to get into the top ten ranking stop getting in the top ten ranking, unless they truely what the user wants to see (informative). Wikipedia is likely to be quite informative though, so IMO this particular Google bomb is justified.

Is the money these lawsuits still giving them a net profit after paying for the lawyers, the labour to track down the pirates, etc.? Or is the purpose of this just to set an example and scare all the other pirates away? Maybe it's the coffee, but I for one see a future where the music industry becomes almost dead due to pirating and music becomes opensource, like *BSD or Apache. Musicians no longer are paid significantly by percentages of record sales. Instead, music is freely and legally downloaded. The musicians perhaps will get their money some other way, like commercials and live performances.

It is good that LinuxWorld has dismissed Dvorak's FUD. Dvorak is more of a source of entertainment than real insight. I remember Dvorak ranting about the "System Idle Process" in the Windows task manager "eating" 98% CPU. If we want his FUD to stop, we need to stop paying attention to him and editors of Slashdot and others need to stop articles linking to his BS.

However, 85% of the students get poor grades that are not honourable. And it is all their fault. Their mindset "chemistry is boring, and math is too hard" is their own fault and they don't deserve an education if they don't even care about learning.

  7. Intel, Dell and AMD. on Dell Rejects AMD Chips (again) · · Score: 1

Perhaps Intel processors are easier to support (overheating perhaps just makes an Intel chip slowdown or reset, and AMD chips become damaged?). But IMNSHO if Dell wants to keep their server market share, I think they should be using AMD. Italium isn't selling. Even if Intel did lose Dell as a customer for Pentium 4, it wouldn't hurt Intel much. Intel still has alot of other cool things like PCI Express to keep them going. I think in the future Intel will stop so much precedence on their CPUs and focus more on complimentary components like PCI Express.

  8. Dell is back to their old trick... on Dell Rejects AMD Chips (again) · · Score: 4, Insightful

I have noticed that the teacher's computers where I am attending are loaded with spyware. They were all using Internet Explorer. I ask them "Would you use a web browser created by a convicted monopolist?" They always say "No." Then I tell them they are using one (Internet Explorer). This gets there interest and then I get them to download and switch over to Firefox.

There is too many bells & whistles for this browser to be practical however (the weather thing is annoying, and it tries to sign me in with my screenname.
