My feeling is not that you're guaranteed anonymity so much as an understanding of how the systems work. When I post to IRC I understand that there is little chance the conversation is logged for good. I understand that there is nothing to gain by having it posted somewhere and searched. But if I were in 1990 I would feel the same way about USENET and I would hate to discover later that somebody, some person (not a business) was keeping track of all posts to say, alt.sex.cthulhu in such a mannor that he could sell them to a service, I would be very upset. Because it is against my understanding of how the service works.
This is how I feel, I just wonder why it's so difficult for people to PORTAL BACK IN TIME and understand what it was like for people then to post on USENET.
eg: I sit in irc all the time, I expect that none of my conversations are archived (I can even contact the admins of said servers to ensure this) However, if things changed and they are now archived (but lets just assume I wasn't informed) how can I be sure things I've said won't bite me in the ass. Also, now I'll have to get a NO-ARCHIVE IRC client to blab about?
The sad thing is I'm a bit torn, old archives of some of these groups are pretty useful, but I can't stand the idea of not knowing better about a particular service.
I worked for a company deploying FIOS, except we called it FTTH. Installing CAT5 into people's homes was a HUGE problem for some homes, I received call after call of people bitching about the installers (contracted out, who dosen't contract these guys out now-a-days?) said something to the effect of, "we can't get a line upstairs, so buy a wireless router." Now, I disagree that this is the right way of handling it, but people are bitchy, and installing a new service into a house is expensive. If cutting costs means you get more FIOS customers activated, then go for it! The customer can always opt-out later and get the CAT5 run themselves.
Um, everybody was when it first happened. The only people who wern't were the local radio stations which we were all listning too because we had no power around here. Sorry I don't have "EXACT SPECIFIC DETAILS" but it was all over the news, which I was watching.
If you're not trying to flame why the hell would you even bring up Fox news? I shouldn't even waste my time posting on/. ugh
It's funny, I worked for an ISP near New Orleans that lost huge market share and was forced to downsize due to regulations. Many people cried in terror for having to go back to the bells.
As far as New Orleans in concerned, I don't think a majority of the US understands all of the censored information that came out of the city. I've had long winded conversations with people who were in the city during and after the hurricane. They have said all those funny stories that the US is claiming didn't happen, oh they happened. Rape? Murder? Looting? All this and more! "It wasn't that bad" Tell that to the people who have left and will never come back. I'll never go to another football game in the Superdome (not that I've been to all that many). I've lost all confidence in our government to do anything right.
The problem with this is the FCC has put similar restrictions on resale telephone lines as well. Meaning, the small guy can't resell dial tone to customers that they don't own the copper too without one of the bells or SBC or whoever, gouging them out the ears. The FCC has been making moves like this for years, that is, submitting to the big Telco's and doing whatever they say to do. I can only hope that cable ends up being an even better medium to dial tone to create better competition.
Oh, I work for one of those small Telco's that is loosing half their revenue because of these sorts of FCC shenanigans. Hundreds of people lost there jobs, the company went thru a sort of downsizing, and were forced... forced mind you to lay down fiber to get video customers.
The US government is paying FTTH deployers something to the extent of.80-.90$ on the dollar. Don't think that SBC is spending 10 billion dollars and not getting any of it back, and no it is not a 50 year investment. I recall SBC saying 10k new customers per week, so its not all that slow. It is just the ability of independent contracters deploying the stuff.
Google should index my website as often as possible.
Why? Because lots of web server's don't have the proper tags that say stuff like last updated, mostly because it causes people like myself to script things to check for such tags, making it much more difficult. I once md5'd the entire contents of a website to check for updates.
I herd about somebody doing this with a old celeron 300mhz? Stuck it in a cooler, and overclocked it. I don't recall how fast he got it, but it was crazy.
Perhaps I don't understand the term pork riders, but could you explain what you mean by this? Are you saying everybody would jump on a bandwagon where, they punish people even more for murder because well... its murder!
I've been toying around with a idea for a while to calculate out pi using euclidean geometry. I don't want to get into the symantecs of it, but the equation you pointed out:
4 * {1 - 1/3 + 1/5 - 1/7 + 1/9 - 1/11...}
what is the equation that tells us how accurate it is? ie:
I know that the series { 2/1 * 2/3 * 4/3 * 4/5 * 6/5 * 6/7... } = pi/2
and is as accurate according too |S1 - Sn| (less then or equal) An+1 = (1)/(n+1)^2 (less then) 0.001
Where S is the series and Sn is the series to the nth term.
Anyway, it looks horrible but if you know much about series you know that you can form a equation to prove how accurate it is. Any advice?
I don't understand why domain names are not treated like ownership of property. I feel it should be mine to do what I feel fit. If I buy a domain, it should be mine to do whatever (legal) activity I feel fit. I look at this as yet another story of the little guy getting pushed over by the big company because he can't possibly defend himself against such a large company, and they have a team of lawyers coming up with all sorts of reason's why "it should belong to them" even though, before the conception of it, they should have spent the $5 (per year!) to register it.
Oddly enough, thats a pretty good idea. The last bit anyway. About the proxy and letting them know there being watched. It is a bit like if you were at work. Although I have mixed feelings about monitoring people, especially your children. I don't know if telling them "I'm going to monitor your online activities" makes it ok to do so.
They would have to go through all the legal troubles of filing a John Doe suit, and subpoena my DSL company for my information, assuming they even keep records of what customer has what IP at what time.
You have no idea. ISP's are required by law to keep this information for 30-90 days. The 'legal trouble' is emailing the ISP from the RIAA saying on this day at this time, this IP downloaded this. And then ISP tells you what there going to tell you. That simple.
As far as "small closed networks" go, of course there not going to be targed as much as mainstream sites. The RIAA isn't going to invest a bunch of time into a small network when they could just pop on the larger networks and catch thousands of people 100x faster. Plain and simple, if your going to share illegal files do it on small, private networks. ie: private BT trackers, small private DC hubs, small irc networks etc.
But the fact is, your never safe. Its always within the law for some members of the government to check out what your doing on the internet.

Is there any advantage to mounting the drive horizontal rather then vertical?

I beg to differ, Mink Louisiana just got phone service and at a huge loss to the local telco.
