    I had to rush to install the new kernel. It
    works great but ...

    OSS Sound flatly refuses to install because
    it only supports up to version 2.2.99

    What the hell for?

    I had to downgrade to the old kernel to get
    my sound back, kernel 2.2.8 that is.

    The funny thing is that most of us who suggest
    that most of us will not find following the
    devel series to be of any use will as in the
    past be among the first ones to upgrade to
    the lastest and greatest unstable kernel.

    It's kind of like the fundy who preaches against
    girly books and has a large collection of
    playboys and penthouses hidden under his bed
    or spend his time in the brothels.

    They all think : "You guys are all morons, those
    rules don't apply to me ..."

    Enjoy folks, and of course we'll be the first
    ones to bitch when the system crashes, but
    we'll have the fun and excitement of the moment ...

    I used to think the way you do about WYSIWYG
    versus text editor until I found out that my
    texts are all screwed up with the WYSIWYG
    editors. I can update my web site much faster
    with a text editor, I use joe.
    My site is mainly a bilingual site, French
    and English even though I have a bit of
    Catalan, Spanish, Portuguese and German.
    I use charset=iso-8859-1 at the beginning to
    make it easy for the non anglo characters.
    To print an é I just type the é without any
    special formating. The WYSIWYG editor replaces
    all my chars to the coded ones. For instances
    an é becomes é an ó becomes ó
    It does look like shit in a text editor and
    impossible to read thru but that is not what
    pisses me off. My java script now shows
    garbage. I had to edit all my html files by
    hand to correct the mess.
    I have not seen a single WYSIWYG editor that
    works correctly.

    It looks to me like a reincarnation of that
    winblows keyboard. We had someone at work
    who was brain dead enough to buy a winblows
    keyboard . He sure hell didn't buy one for himself
    for home use.

    After he left I inherited his computer which
    I use in the lab for my tests. I had a hard time
    finding a sucker for the keyboard, no matter how
    nicely I tried to describe its good sides.

    At last someone was gullible enough to accept a
    trade. Now I have a real keyboard ...

    There is more to it than that. People who blame
    things like doom, violence on TV or sex on TV have
    blinders. These things just reflect society, what
    happens in society. Each of us have some anger
    built in for some reason or another and as human
    beings have sexuals urges just like other animals.

    For most people playing violent games or watching
    violent films will take care of those animal needs
    for violence. It's like when I was a kid and you'd
    get angry, instead of kicking someone you'd go
    hit a punching bag or something. TV is a fantasy
    world where you live your dreams or other people's
    dreams.

    I can't disagree that some of the people will
    try to copy some violent images they saw on TV
    or in the cinema but this is minuscule compare
    to the overall population who are decent citizens.
    They don't just do this because they saw it on
    TV or doom but because they have some vendetta
    and find ideas wherever they can find them.
    It these things weren't there they'd find
    something else.

    I'd rather have my son play doom and get all his
    anger on monsters than go out and beat the fundy
    kid next door. This kid is a sweetheart who is
    adored by virtually all the girls he knows.
    There is no violent bone in that young man.

    What a kid need is a father and a mother who
    adore him and will teach him how to be a decent
    person. Don't expect the society to do it for you.

    When the parents aren't there expect just about
    anything.

    If it becomes impossible to write software that
    is proprietary Linux will have no future in the
    industry. I don't understand the stand of some
    people who would want us programmers who make a
    living on programming to go on welfare. I sure as
    hell am not interested in just giving software
    support.
    This works for systems where people are at loss on
    a problem. Usually it doesn't work that way. We
    write programs that people need and software
    support is almost always never needed as the help
    files are good enough.
    In a way, fanatics who want nothing but free
    software want us in the poor house because
    they're too cheap to buy software or just
    some comies who think those working for a living
    don't deserve to get paid for their hard work.

    On Linux there is room for both proprietary
    and non proprietary software. We write code
    to earn money and we contribute some free
    software to help people who can't afford or
    are too cheap to buy software.

    You don't know what the heck you are talking
    about.
    I have been using just about every versions that
    came around of Netscape for posting and I could
    be on a newsgroup for hours and I don't recall
    it crashing. I had problem at one time with
    the ISP's fix IP which would send netscape
    in deep space (and NcFTP as well) but it wasn't
    due to Linux or Netscape or NcFTP.

    I've tried KDE's news program. It works well
    even though I prefer Netscape.

    Some people swear by GNU.

    There are lots of em.

    And at least under Linux it doesn't Melissa you.

    Didn't you read RedHat 6.0?

    I've installed RedHat 5.9 last week (since
    then it has been removed because of the
    frequent core dumps)

    Hopefully they'll fix that before the release.

    As for colors on the console. The boot is the
    only place. They still forget to put colors
    or the listing of files. We still have to had
    it in a scripts.

    I think I would entirely agree with you. I
    never looked at it because I didn't want to
    get pissed off at someone making fun of
    a hero off all engineers.

    I think it is sick for anyone to make
    fun of Dilbert but freedom has a price ...

    I would be very interested to know how you managed
    that miracle. I installed RedHat 5.9 with the
    latest Gnome that comes with the CD (1.03).

    I thought it was the greatest thing until I
    realize that it would bomb out every time
    I would try to play a Gnome game. The KDE games
    loaded OK. I also found out that any sound
    program would do the same.

    After zillions of core dumps I checked to see
    if the sound worked correctly under the console.
    It did. I use 4-front software by the way.

    I then installed Mandrake 5.3 which works
    rock solid with KDE. Gnome may be neat but is
    not ready for release.

    You get worst than that if you go to some
    of Microsoft's sites. This afternoon I was
    looking for some information on one of Microsoft's
    site. I used the search command, a tragic mistake,
    it sent converted Netscape into some kind
    of Zombie state. Netscape was still there but was
    incapacitated. I would close it and come back
    and it was still in the same shape.
    I gave the winblows salute to get the kill menu
    and saw netscape was in the task list even though
    I had closed it. I kill the application and
    reloaded netscape which was now running correctly,
    until I went back to the Microsoft's site again.

    I had noticed this time that it said :"designed
    with J++"

    What is tha garbage software by the way? I
    thought that it was supposed to pull off the
    market.

    There was an interesting case when I worked
    at Cambridge Instruments in Buffalo. A lady
    got a glocoma test (air shot in the eye) and
    sued us because she said her eye got damaged
    by some sand. It is physically impossible for
    anything to fit in that tiny hole especially
    a grain of sand. Anyhow, she was basically
    laughed out of court.

    What Europeans should realize is that here in the
    USA we have the opportunity to use the court to
    correct wrongs that are made against us. But as
    everyone else we have our morons and our greedy
    assholes who think they can make a quick dollar.

    One thing that may shock many is that criminals
    have their own lawyers and sue as a hobby while
    they're in prison. Again Europeans shouldn't
    conclude some other shit because of this. If we
    are to look at weird things done in the UK for
    instance we'd laugh too.

    At the end, most Americans and Europeans aren't
    morons. It is just that idiots are easier to
    spot than normal people. Our newsmedia are finding
    more of those and they like to show them out
    for kicks. Maybe the brits try to hide theirs.

    This is all bulshit! Violent games or violent TV
    doesn't generate violence in life. Kids aren't
    as stupid as fundies may think. The problem
    of violence by the kids usually lies in a refusal
    by the parents and kids to assume responsability
    for the wrongfull acts of the kids. Usually a kid
    who is violent is beaten by his mother or father
    or watch his father beat his mom or his mom beat
    his father.

    Al Gore stance on encription is basically what the
    law enforcement wants, not to spy on you or I but
    to retrieve suspect terrorists or drug dealers.
    Not that I agree with the idea but this is not
    something that bothers me as much as the approach
    of the religious right who want to control our
    personal lives.
    The Republican's balls have been controlled by the
    fundies for years, at least with Clinton and
    Gore our personal lives are left alone. Whatever
    Tipper comes up with will never stand in court
    so I'm not too concerned about that, she wouldn't
    be the president anyway. Any democrat knows damm
    well that fundies aren't liked very much by
    the majority of voters so they know where to
    stand on this issues on personal freedoms.

    The republicans need the fundies to keep their
    political seats.

    Ideally we would need someone down the middle
    but there is no such beast. Bush looks good
    but he'll have to kiss the fundies' asses to
    get elected. If he does that I will not
    hesitate to cast my vote for Al Gore.

    In politic we must choose the least of two evils.

    As for getting people who know what they're
    doing for the Gore web site, this will take
    time, remember that the campaign is just starting.

    you. Everyone knows that politicians aren't
    hackers let alone programmers. You must credit
    Al Gore for supporting the internet though.

    As for the term "Open Source" I fail to see
    the sacrilege here. Now one owns those two words
    just as no one owns the word windows despite
    Microsoft's claim.

    Just get a life and get over it.
    Despite his strange wife's agenda Al Gore is
    good for the technological world, he may have
    some things to learn but in comparision to
    other politicians he ranks as one of the best.

    SO isn't that bad. It doesn't crash on me as
    often as it does on your system. On the other
    hand it does crash when I try to open a file
    without extension. It is not cabable to load
    it as text for some weird reason.

    Unless they fix moronic bugs like this Word
    Perfect is going to bury them.

    As for Office on winblows, ever heard of the
    blue screen of death? virus?

    Buchanan is a joke, a slightly better candidate
    than Pat Robertson was. The real choice will
    be between Al Gore and George Bush.
    Both Al Gore and George W Bush would make great
    presidents.
    Al's handicap is his wife and George's handicap
    is his kissing up to the fundies. We're in a fix,
    I rather have Tipper than a fundy. If George Bush
    tells the fundies to kiss off, I'll vote for him.

    I find this flaming of the Vice President pure
    stupidity. Al Gore should have phrased it better.
    If you look back you will realize that his is the
    one who pushed the internet into what it is today.
    To claim that he actually invented it was a bit
    exagerated but put yourself in front of a camera
    and be asked a lot of questions you would likely
    be making a few mistakes as well.

    Al Gore has been for years a strong supporter of
    our rights to have satellite dishes as well as
    a strong supporter of the Internet.

    Al Gore is a good man and would make a fine
    president.

    I did read what you wrote but I don't think
    you went thru all the possibilities. I used
    to run Slackware on a 486 and had similar
    problems. I managed to get PPP to work a program
    that generates the script for me. None of the
    ones you stipulate works. I would have to look
    for it and I would remember by the name.
    My modem needed a particular initialization
    string and with \ replaced by \\
    Also my ISP uses pap.
    It took me a long time to get it to work so
    I was using only OS/2 for connecting to the
    net.
    When I upgraded to RedHat it worked right
    out of the box with a few clicks.

    If PPP doesn't work under Linux you read some
    of the misc HOWTOS and find out which file
    you take of the CD to fix the problem when
    it's not your hardware that's shot.
    With winblows you have to hide the shotgun
    as it would be a bit too tempting. Make sure
    your winblows CD is close by for the reinstall.

    Don't lose the codes. On Win 95 I had lost
    my codes and managed to get a clean install with
    bogus numbers. I don't know if that would still
    work on Win 98.

    I had DRDOS 5.0 installed and it worked
    beautifully. I needed to run PALASM. It would
    crash if I used extended memory. I was told
    that the program was using some Microsoft
    libraries which were responsible for the crashes
    and I should install DOS 4.0 if I wanted it to
    run without crashing. I kept DRDOS but had to
    disable that feature in PALASM.

    I never used winblows at the time so I wouldn't
    know about any crashes on DRDOS.
