Sorry if I'm being obtuse, but does that mean that scripts written for version 1 will run on version 2 and vice versa? Is version 2 a superset of version 1, so that it's possible to write scripts in a portable fashion?

I agree. Free learning tools are a valuable resource and they can spark someone's interest whereas traditional teaching environments usually involve significant investment of time and money before you even find out if the topic is of interest.

If people aren't happy with the accuracy of the lectures, then they can go and produce something more accurate and give everyone access to it. Khan Academy is a great starting point that can hopefully inspire would-be students and teachers.

I don't think your bus analogy is quite appropriate. Typically, people pay to travel on a bus and if you pay for a service, then you generally have the right to ask questions. Even if it's a "free" bus service provided by local government, then as a taxpayer, you'd still be paying for it and have the right to know more details about it.

  20. Re:The google's way ? on Ask Slashdot: How To Get Old Commercial Software To Be Open-Sourced? · · Score: 1

The point of open source is the freedom to modify and run software on your own computer. If you'd like to force Google to release any modifications that they make internally, then you're reducing their freedom to modify code.

I wouldn't like to have to publish every single bash script modification that I make on my own machines and I don't think you should have to publish source code unless you're also distributing it.

I agree that Google should "give back" to the community, but I also think they should be allowed to run whatever they like internally.

Time for a car analogy: If I give a hitch-hiker a lift and then the hitch-hiker starts demanding to have a look at my car's engine and wants to check the car's history, I'm going to chuck him out.

  21. Re:The google's way ? on Ask Slashdot: How To Get Old Commercial Software To Be Open-Sourced? · · Score: 4, Insightful

  22. Re:Probably on Ask Slashdot: What Are the Implications of Finding the Higgs Boson? · · Score: 3, Insightful

I think finding the Higgs boson is important to guide theories. By finding it at certain energy levels, it can validate and invalidate certain theories and provide information for future theories.

There's a feedback loop between theory and experiments where the results of one influences the other. Sometimes experimental data can outstrip theory - the kind of "I didn't expect that" experiment that prompts theorists to start inventing new ideas that can hopefully match the results.

Other times, the theory is worked out first and then experiments designed to prove or disprove it - the kind of "I was right!" ones.

I don't think people "wait" to find practical applications, but it's more often that people didn't realise the full extent of what was possible. Lasers were theorised by Einstein around 1918, but the practical applications weren't realised until much later. Lasers were virtually a solution looking for a problem.

I was replying to a post saying that Scotland and England were the same country, which they most definitely are not. The funny thing is how anti-english some of the scots are, which is why I dared anyone to go over to Scotland and call them English (probably something to do with the centuries of animosity between the 2 countries).

I'd call you Cornish or English or British as Cornwall is part of England which is part of Britain (which is part of the UK). However, Scotland is not part of England, although it is part of Britain (and the UK).

I agree that Scotland and England are very closely related legally and being part of the same sovereign state does not necessarily make them the same country.
