  1. Re:Steam pricing is the weak point on The Age of Steam · · Score: 3, Informative

Steam pricing in Europe went from good to poor after they decided to implement the 1 € = 1 $ pricing scheme around new year.

This happened at the same time that they introduced the € as currency for everyone in Europe but UK residents, even for countries that do not use the euro. There's a long topic of complaints and documentation about this on the Steam forums.

Up until this change I would usually buy from Steam since it was cheaper or the same price as any other place, with the digital distribution as a bonus. Now I'll only buy from Steam if there's no other option available.

Despite Valve's reputation as an open company, there's currently been no official comment regarding this change.

I never claimed Ruby can do everything BASIC does or vice versa. BASIC was an excellent teaching tool back when it was actually being used (or even misused as an OS in some cases), but that does not mean it should be kept anymore.
Line by line Ruby IS as simple to pick up as BASIC, and putting pixels on the screen is nowhere near as important as learning the basics concepts, such as objects, variables, control statements and so on.

Ruby is a perfect language to learn programming in. It has an excellent command line mode, and the syntax is easier to learn than most languages. As easy as BASIC, yet relevant for use today, and much more powerful. http://www.ruby-lang.org/en/

These searches are propaganda tools, not effective terrorism-prevention methods.

Not entirely the same thing. "Normal" porn does not contain actual rape, just people having sex. The valid comparison is that if you watch real tapes of women being raped you are more likely to rape random women on the street.

What you're forgetting is that child pornography is footage of actual abuse, not some rape fantasy flick with paid actors.

I'm not sure all gamers are completely human though. With all the aimbots and wallhacks in use in just about every first person shooter with multiplayer capability, it seems some gamers would rather be bots than play the game themselves.

With cheating spreading like wildfire, it's going to start affecting the mainstream gamers more and more. The gaming companies are going to have to start dealing with it, or risk losing profits when frustrated gamers give up on online multiplayer gaming altogether.

Skype is a great concept and SkypeOut would be too, if they could just fix these problems. As it stands, they're losing customers who want to pay, simply because they've been unable to setup a payment system that is robust enough.

Until engineers and computer scientists can make computers idiot proof, I don't see why we should consider computers a 'generic consumer product'. You need a license to drive a car, since the car is by no stretch of the imagination idiot proof. If you try driving a car in traffic without any sort of training you'll most likely end up hurting yourself and others.

Similarily, using a computer with a broadband connection to the Internet without at least some idea of how to make the computer secure (i.e. antivirus software/firewall) will most likely result in a computer infected with trojans and spyware, causing problems for the owner. What's worse, his computer will probably infect other computers as well.

Sometimes the concept of an "Internet license" similar to the driver's license actually seems like a good idea. A driver's license doesn't stop car accidents from happening, but a least you're keeping some of the worst morons off the road.
