  1. Will they never learn...? on NASA Prepares to Launch Comet-Buster · · Score: 4, Funny
Carried aboard the impactor will be a standard mini-CD containing the names of comet, space and other enthusiasts from around the world.
Now look, we all remember hearing back in the '80s how you could run a truck over a CD, cover it in jam and use it as a teething-ring and still get it to play, but it's just not true!!!

Send an I-pod instead. That might survive. If it doesn't get stolen en-route.

  3. Correct me if I'm wrong, but... on California Sets Fines for Spyware · · Score: 1

Even assuming the wording isn't full of holes, doesn't this only affect the (relatively few) companies who legitimately and openly use spyware? The real problem is those who use it illegally, without authorisation or concern for the rights of the user and - more importantly - from another country!! I mean, I know the US has a reputation for believing itself to be the centre of the world, but this is a bit short-sighted, even for Arnie!

And as regards the BBC; don't shoot the messenger.

  4. Oh dear. Oh dear oh dear oh dear. on Engineered Enhancers Closer Than You Think · · Score: 1

It can't have escaped the more recreational of slash-dotters that our good /.spamming friend has recently gotten his hands on an old copy of Deus Ex and put all the enhancements, in order, into an article... can it?

Is there ANY way to stop this Pigpen, or whoever, from having his submissions taken seriously?

    No, I thought not.

On the plus-side though, I can't wait to be able to launch a little 3rd-eye armed flyng drone from my own head. Or light-up eyes! That'd be greeeat.

Of course, to put it in context, £3 was worth a lot more in those days. You could buy a house for that back then. Or a table-top PONG game...

  8. Ah, but.... on Battle of the Ages; Stereotypes Collide · · Score: 1

There's a basic industry-wide degradation in lower-level programming understanding. I've heard the lament from many retired coders who say that programs these days are just so -clunky-! They're used to working in assembler language, and got frustrated by the amount of processing-time used up by in-house software generated by higher-level-language "experts" who didn't understand the resource implications of their code.

I've even heard some go so far as to say that the escalating inefficiency of code (in CPU terms, NOT coding terms) will eventually have a serious impact on the relative acceleration of computing power.

But then, what do I know? I'm sat here coding in Java... *ducks behind cover*

  9. Re:Space lens on Liquid Lenses For Camera Phones · · Score: 1

    Consider the options:

1: launch a very, very thin adaptable reflector, weighing a possible few kilos

2: launch a very, very big glob of oil and water and spend several million dollars turning it into mayonnaise during a heavy launch.

Nice idea, but Isaac Asimov would not approve.

To be fair, with the volume of documentation appearing out there teaching you "How to optimise your web-site get googled to death", it's not surprising that the noise is getting worse. It's a regular arms-race, with search-engine development and web-design counter-development.

On the plus side though, dev-races like this do help to improve search-engine technology. Although this article doesn't fill me with hope...

  13. Re:why so little support for gamers? on Dual Video Cards Return · · Score: 1

The answer's pretty recursive; there aren't enough gamers with dual/quad processor platforms out there to warrant coding big-name games to make use of multiple-processors. So, there aren't many gamer-oriented multi-processor platforms out there... Besides, there really isn't much in terms of processing power that people demand at the moment. There aren't any games that would benefit more from a twice-the-price processor than from a twice-the-price graphics card. When it comes to gaming, we don't want clever - we just want pretty. Sad, but true.
