None of that matters, because the other mistake you are making is believing that people "post" stories (i.e. "drop in to advertise their products".) News and links to news / project announcements get submitted.
I refer you to the post you replied to, where I said: "Last I checked, this was supposed to be a community site, where the content is submitted by the community."
My original post on the subject also clearly talks about "a bunch of story submissions, mostly about MediaGoblin", so I'm not sure what you're talking about. Perhaps you're replying to the wrong post?
judging a message by the nature of the messenger is just flat stupid
Sure, and the fable of the boy who cried wolf seeks to teach young children not that people judge a message by the nature of the messenger, but that wolves eat sheep.
It's not even a frigging product. It's Open Source software.
Oh, of course. It's not like it's possible for someone to personally benefit from their Open Source project gaining increased adoption. I'm sure Linus Torvalds would be just as much of a highly sought celebrity if nobody had heard of his Open Source software.
For once, the summary actually includes a clear description of the open source product that was updated, it's a "free software media hosting platform".
Advertise, v., to describe or draw attention to (a product, service, or event) in a public medium in order to promote sales or attendance.
We like free software around here. It costs us nothing to try it out, and it profits the submitter nothing to "advertise" it.
Sure. If you don't value your time. And if the submitter doesn't benefit from increased adoption of their project.
You're acting like something corrupt is going on. Save it for the actual slashvertisements!
I'm acting as though someone who is not a member of the slashdot community is submitting content under the guise of 'from the community, for the community'. I readily admit that I assumed that slashdot content was community-sourced. Apparently I was wrong in my assumption, as so many of you ACs have eagerly pointed out. I welcome our new content-providing overlords.
Would you be complaining if Ingo Molnar, Linus Torvalds, or Greg Kroah-Hartman submitted a link to a story about the Linux kernel?
Yes, I would be, if they're not members of the slashdot community. Last I checked, this was supposed to be a community site, where the content is submitted by the community.
If you have no issue with this being an advertising platform where arbitrary people from across the world can drop in to advertise their products (free or otherwise) in the name of community interest, then so be it. Personally, that's not what I thought slashdot was. Maybe I was wrong.
The last time this paroneayea fellow posted a comment on slashdot was Sunday February 10, 2013.
Since then, it's been nothing but a bunch of story submissions, mostly about MediaGoblin. I wouldn't consider paroneayea to be a member of the slashdot community, and the singleminded focus on MediaGoblin suggests some undisclosed relationship with MediaGoblin.
I think you missed the "proportional steering" steering part of GP's comment. And there's no reason why a throttle lever would have any less travel than a foot pedal.
That's complete and utter bullshit. I drive a '95 Impala. I can hold the brakes at a stop and floor the throttle, and cut the back tires loose.
Yea? What kind of acceleration do you get when you do this? What's the top speed that you reach?
Wait, what's that? 0mphph? 0mph? So you're saying that... the sum total of braking forces is greater than the sum total of powered wheel forces? Even when with the throttle fully open?
$10k USD for a structured-light solution to depth sensing?
Decent time-of-flight cameras could be had for half that. Ten years ago. Like CSEM's SwissRanger. (CSEM seems to have spun off that entire product line, which is now available from Mesa Imaging.)
Ah, I know about the resort... I'm more concerned with flying in to Seattle-Tacoma international airport only to find that the roads to Baker are not passable. IIRC, Mt Baker gets more annual snowfall than any other resort in the world, and I've seen pictures of truly ridiculous amounts of snow there, road closures and all. Was hoping you had some insight into how an east coaster could best plan a ski trip out there.
Out east, there's no such thing as a powder day. I introduced my girlfriend to east coast skiing a few years back but I would love for her to experience real skiing. However, since many (maybe even most) of my own ski trips out west weren't very lucky in this regard, Mt Baker struck me as one place where limitless powder was nearly guaranteed. I just have no idea how to get to Baker unless Hertz rents snowcats in Seattle.
I still wonder why there's such a large population of anti-science zealots on slashdot. People that claim someone's research "falsified all the major climate models", but can't point to a single person who's celebrating being the biggest thing to ever hit the climate science scene. Surely you don't think overturning an entire body of research like that would go unnoticed? Honestly, I found it easier to listen to the 9/11 truthers, as they at least tried to come up with coherent (if not entirely likely) explanations for their beliefs.

Also, good point about the gains in a retirement account being taxed as income. That makes this potentially more complicated. Reminds me why I went into engineering instead of finance:P
While I agree with everything you've said, I'd just like to add one more point.
You're not the only one that's upset over this censorship. Today everyone seems to be very much opposed to censorship, whether or not such censorship would limit the reach of ISIS' message. However, whenever there's some school shooting, we're the same ones scrambling to blame the media for focusing on the shooter, turning him (it's invariably a male) into a celebrity, and encouraging others to follow these same footsteps to fame. If censorship of ISIS' decapitation videos is deplorable, why isn't censorship of a school shooters' life story?
And the back of the card is the only place they could get your signature? They couldn't have you sign some separate piece of paper and mail it back to them when you get/activate the card? It's just totally a coincidence that putting the signature directly on the back of the card enables forgery which shifts liability from the card issued to the cardholder? Bull. Shit.

I didn't know that only for-profit commercial enterprises were capable of having undisclosed relationships. My apologies.

Mind you, they'll have to teach the thing to parallel park...
Actually, that part is old news.
Once their track record has been proven
Okay, at what point will that be?
Autonomous cars need to prove that they're capable of being safer than operator-driven cars.
Okay, what's next?

I'd mod you up but the rest of my mod points just expired. Either way, keep up the good work.

Furthermore, I've seen plenty of contempt for "breeders" and other childfree-by-choice advocacy on Slashdot.

You live near Mt Baker? In Washington? ... In the winter?
Offtopic: I've wanted to go skiing there for a long time. Is it possible to get out there in the winter without a helicopter?
