And how many people do you know who can do this.
even with "appropiate tools", Half the information is in the names used within the code NOT in "function_9_local_int_variable_1993".
Like wise who is going to pay for someone to reverse engineer something huge when better "bang for buck" would be implementing a true OSS version.
Oh No!
What book?
I didn't get a book with either of my pet rocks...
Damn, maybe if I did I might have been able to work out why they bred so profusly.
And stopped it!
Well Linux take up might be bad in Australia/New Zealand but I was under the impression that we hold one of the three premier linux conferences in the world. ( Blatent plug for LCA 2006 which starts next Monday in Dunedin, New Zealand.:-) ).
Enough of the plug.
In some respects the article is correct! Trying to convince people that Linux is a viable alternative is hard. Within an organisation someone in MIS/IT (whatever) department does need to be a champion. I'm currently working in an organisation where Linux was being pushed over Windows. The main IT guy left and now things have swung back the other way. Considering our products are based on Linux the lack of support is high.
It really is a matter of trying to find ways of bringing Linux to the attention of "just people". I'm currently trying to set up a course through our local community college. From their I'm going to work on the local secondary schools.
Well LCA http://conf.linux.org.au/ is about to start and there seems to be at least 8 miniconfs on before hand. If this is not evidence of strong community involvement in open source, what is?
When I finally obtained my first degree I was asked to take a 20% pay cut to be employed as a Software engineer. The work was the same as I was already writing software (assembler, compiler, loader, drivers etc). But I was employed as a hardware technician and also assembling, testing and debugging boards.
Another contract I ended up with was solely because I had a Master of Science in computer science. A pure research degree. I joined a team that was very high powered. Alas a dotcom that went into liquidation. Sigh!
I am now finding that I shouldn't mention the current postgraduate degree I'm studying as it does seem to concern Management. It is in Master of Philosphy in Ancient History.
Also I get the occasional bad reaction to having the MSc and thus I have a very strong tendency to play it all by ear. If it looks like it might help then mention the degrees otherwise keep my mouth SHUT.
Yep, and it feels damn good when your one of the few Linux installations in a predominately Windows environment, especially when some Marketing JERK brings his infected Windows laptop into the building plugs it directly into the network and kills everybody else for about two days.
We have just recently (Sydney Australia) have had our annual Easter Show (Bring the farmers to the city). One 'fast food' stall supplied a number of our native animals (including both animals on the Australian coat of Arms). This stall was packed the three times I walked past it!!!
Aargh but you might be right, the clientle looked like your typical "bloody tourist".
Like-wise trying to prove faith using pseudo-scientific crap.
If your faith is strong you don't need proof. If it's not then no amount of 'scientific' proof is going to replace it. There is room in our society for both faith and proof, religion and science.
I just get so annoyed when people with little faith try to bolster this faith with science in order for me to see the "truth".
I don't believe! Three of the major religions in this world periodically kill each other but they believe in the same god. It's just the prophets that are different.
You open the documents with Open Office, you save as am Open Office document. Two thesis (thesee?) multiple journal papers no problem! What's the issue???
The Australian OSDC http://www.osdc.com.au/ is being held in Melbourne over the next three days. During this conferenence there is a paper discussing Mr O'Dowds comments over the last few months. This back flip just adds weight to the arguments to be presented at the conference. It feels good to be vindicated.
I remember you being born..... Therefore it must be at least 53 years old
Hmmph!

And yes get off my lawn.( Well in my case dirt)
I have and still do manage a good income from FOSS but the increasing competition is starting to worry me.
Oh wait that means there is more than one of us!
It looks like a solution to rising sea levels from global warming to me.
It seems to have stopped here in Australia
Oh No!

I think firefly is more likely influenced/based on Cowboy Bepop then star wars!
Not true!
We have Ubuntu Linux

Who are the folks I am putting on the board of my newly formed open source organization?
Well it's mot me! But I forgive you.

Lurkers!
Oh Damn! I didn't post that, I'm not here.
Well I have run into both sides of the argument.

It's a post to the wrong article! But even then I had to read it twice to make sure it didm't fit in. Oops sorry! Pardon the pun!
Yeah but this is the first time you get to watch them decay "live"....
Heathen !!!!
It doesn't work unless you believe!!!

It's in my contract. Any non=related work or research not part of my day to day work is exempt.
Great!!! Now where's my old mindstorms kit and the rest of the kids Lego... What are these Bionicle things? Hey, I can build a space suit as well!!

If we change to base 12 does that mean I need to grow an extra finger on each hand. I have enough trouble counting to ten as it is!
