  2. Goal not a requirement on Does Company-Wide Language "Standardization" Work? · · Score: 1

Standardization should be a goal not a requirement. When picking the right tool some weighting should be given toward the tool deemed standard. With the extra weighting if the standard tool is not as good as some other tool then the other tool should be used. This prevents the programmer who want to just inflate his resume of pick the flavor of the day language from making a bad decision.

Seriouslly. I was an Army Officer from 1996-2000 after I finished college with a BS in CS. This experience put me miles ahead of my peers in terms of understanding what is important, leadership and maturity. Do not do anything technical in the military instead do something really challenging like flying Apache helicopters or be and Infantry platoon leader. I had not trouble getting a development job after being in the Army. I studied for the final 6 months I was in the Army and really crammed for each interview. In addition to being prepared, many veterans in management respect military service. The down side to this is that you might get killed, but as they say in the Army - whatever doesn't kill you makes you stronger.

I interviewed for a university staff software development position. The interview went very well. They were very positive and hinted that they would offer me a position. When I asked when I could expect to hear from them I was told they were interviewing for 6 weeks and they were two weeks into the interview cycle so I could expect to hear from them in a month! I took me less then two weeks to get two industry job offers at 50% more then the university. I withdrew from consideration. My point is - it's a different world.

What about the grown defect list? What if a large number of sectors with data are thought to be bad and marked as such by the drive? There could be lots of sensitive data in unacessable areas of the drive. I doubt this information could be erased from DOS or Linux.

  8. Re:Rolling your own on A History of Icons · · Score: 1

Do you know how much icons cost to buy $$$$? There are lots of variables but US companies charge $400 to $500 per icon. We send ours to a guy in Russia who does them for ~$150 each. He does great work though he is not that punctual.
If this sound like a lot of money consider that each icon is an Adobe Illustrator file that looks like a 3-d rendering of the image. The icons are then converted to various bit map formats and color depths. As they get small, they require hand retouching. One also typically also need normal, selected and disabled version

I have an IBM T40p Pentium M 1.6 / 7200 RPM HD 1GB of RAM. It compiles our code base in less then 9 minutes. The only other machines in the office that can beat it are new 3GHz + P4s. For at least 6 months it was the fastest machine we had for building.

We have some AMD 64 machines which I expect to beat the Pentium M buy quite a bit for compilation so there will always be desktops that can beet laptops, but the gap is getting smaller.

  15. Lot's of people, very few good people. on What is the Tech Jobs Situation in Late 2004? · · Score: 1

I have been recruiting for almost a year now. We spend an obscene amount of money and time one this. I review ~200 resumes a month, conduct ~10-20 phone interviews a month and do 2 or 3 in person interviews a month. We barely manage to hire one person a month. Nearly everyone we offer takes the job, but there just aren't many good people around. At least half of the people we have hired are on H1 visas. We simply hire the best people we can and if we could not hire people on H1Bs then we would have to significantly lower our standards.

HELP WANTED! Reno, NV. Talented Software Engineers. www.pc-doctor.com. Mention /.

I am the Director of Engineering for a small (50 employees, 25 developers) software company in Reno, NV. Reno is not the Silicon Valley, but it is nice affordable place to live. We pay very well, have amazing benefits and do a lot of very cool software development.

More anecdotes. The numbers of resumes we get per month has been falling stedally over the past year even though we continue to post and report on Monster, Dice and in papers. A friend of mine in the Sacramento area got 2 job offers and 5 interview (which he had to cancel because he got a job so fast) in 2 weeks. This was in September. If you cannot get a job in software development look inward.
