Self-absorbed...hardly. It was lonely, became depressed, and took matters into it's own hands by using/. for what it truly is...a little, self contained, DDOS attack.
...but aren't we violating some sort of test ban treaty by testing the missle defense shield? If so...I wish we would at least make it effective, if we are already going to the trouble of violating international law. As I recall, this isn't the first time an interceptor failed miserably.
I hope this is the final little step that is neeeded to make tablet PC's a viable option. Given...I don't want to see a 5 minute spalsh animation on my cell phone any more than I want a hole in my head...but flash is a powerful tool, when used sparingly, and could really boost the efficency/awesomeness of many devices.
Volcanic activity seems like something of a strech...now, particulate venting isn't anything particularly unusual for large, rock like objects in space (see: comets, some asteroids). A collision, though, seems like the most likely cause.
It won't be true, they would ban the movie from being shown. It's just going to be another "look...pretty explosions" movie. But, at least, will will be be massacred along side a few other good comics-cum-movies like Hellblazer.
I'm happy...in the sense that I'm sure the film will be successful. I worry, however (in fact, I'm pretty sure) that the comic and its message will be corrupted by Hollywood, which is almost certainly looking for another "Punisher" in Moores allegory.
True...but remembering my biology training, it becomes very clear how easy it would be to completely flub such a small scale thing. I remember carrying out much simpler and seemingly straight foreward experiments and getting frightening divergent data. The best example of which was in carrying out an experiment involving fertilizer and cyanobacteria, I was amazed to find that they were all dead, even at the lowest level added of the chemical fertillizers. I later realized that I had created a mild acid with the proportions of fertilizers I added to the water, causing my entire sample to perish. It would have happened every time the eperiment was repeated, had I not caught that fundimental flaw. Thats why I remain skeptical, even of very well trained and qualified scientists...simply because everyone can make silly mistakes.
Well...back pain comes from our specific upright posture, where small problems in the stride can be amplified up the body, causing damage in the lower back. I highly doubt that the shrinkage (if it exists) is anything but the brains adverse reaction to high stress, or possibly indicative of some deeper neurological issue that either causes/is caused by the pain.
...You are right, but it need not even be that black and white. What if all the people they sampled came from an area with some sort of pollution, they only had a sample size of 26. So many variables, and such a small group. Such drastic findings have to be looked at skeptically.
I'm inheriently distrustful of these studies, if simply because of the sheer number of flaws that could be present in their design. I remember, in the space of one week last year, hearing three different studies; "Eggs are good for you", "Eggs are bad for you" and finally back to "Eggs are good for you". Without huge problems in the study, they couldn't have come up with such disparate results. Take this with a grain of salt.
On a trip several years ago, a friend figured out how to rig up a portable DVD player to their Gamecube and make it relitively portable. I thought it would be the most awesome thing ever...but there is NOTHING more annoying than hearing a game full blast, complete with player feedback, while trying to sleep.
Once again proving the usefulness of the Li ion battery.
The only problem I can forsee is the potential for one more method of annoying neighbour on long flights. Portable DVD players with external speakers used to be my pet-peev...but I can only imagine what it would be like to having someone playing Madden next to me for hours on end.
...about Google, I would hardly call it the killer app. for searching, it just happens to be the best thing we have. It won't be from Microsoft, but I can't wait for the day that someone comes up with an application that is more "sticky" than Google.
I guess I'm just uncomfortable with my car being effectively tied down for such a long period of time. Beyond the simple "what if I want to take a midnight snack run?" there is the deeper issues of "how would the performance be effected if I unplugged halfway through recharging?"
Hmm...I wouldn't buy a cell phone that took 10 hours to recharge, the downtime would be too hurtful to its overall usefulness. Why on earth would anyone use a car that was out of commision for 10 hours, when one could go refill their hybrid in less than 5 minutes?
NOOOO...come back, my precious... /. effect in full force today, I see. That might be a record.
DI: So, what is your proposal?
EA: Screw you, employees with stock options created in 2002. We're taking over...
Combine this with the previous story, and you would get a killing machine that ran really slowly, and randomly shut itself down mid killer-rampage.

Skif just seems like a particularly wimpy name for a "laser space battle station". Maybe it's just me...

HA!
Steven Hawking could finally escape from his abusive wife!
You are absolutely right...and I am forgetting my physics *grin*
Because I can refill my hybrid once a month, for $30, and not have my car be useless for 10 hours.

Hmm...£170,000 translates into, what, $250,000? For that price I want my armor plated, gas chugging Mercedes.
