Slighly (very) off topic, but I have a great story about Mensa.
During my Freshman year of college, I was approached by serveral Frats trying to get me to join (it was the week before Rush). I really didnt want to join any Frat, so it seemed like every five minutes I was saying no.
Anyway, this guy I had met a couple of times comes up to me starts asking me if I would like to join Mensa(which I had never heard of at the time). So naturally I said "I really dont want to join a Fraterinity right now." He gave me a nice perplexed look and walked away.
I dont think you are looking at this the right way. Your arguments seem to be based on the idea that only you are living to be a 1000 years old. If everyone is living that much longer, there will not be this enigma problems you are relating. Sure friends and family will die suddenly, and it will be just as tragic at is it today. But think of the possibilties.
Imagine what it would be like if some of our greatest minds of today were able to continue with their work for HUNDREDS of years rather than decades.
Social orders would have to be massively restructered, just to accomidate the extended lifespans. Everyone would be that much more careful with the world around them, since they would be able to see the changes, rather than worry about what they are leaving as a "legacy". With perpetual youth, I think we would see a resurgence in the Frontiers-man attitude to explore new things and seek new thrills, while being tempured with a greater understanding gained from long life.
I see lots of advantages, and Im sure their could be even more problems we dont know about (like how would our brains remember 1000 years worth of memories? Can it hold that much? Would we slowly change into someone else entirely?)
Its a fastinating "what if" game, at the very least.
In college I took a physics class on E&M. Once I started learning about all the fields that surround an electric current...it scared me. Growing up in a cold enviroment, I used to sleep under an electric blanket. Not anymore. I just can't do it.
I afraid I only got into the mp3 downloads late in Napsters life cycle. But I do remember the first song I downloaded. I choose a metalica song (the god that failed, I thought it was rather appropriate). Even though I own the CD, I wanted to stick it to them; you know, juvenile retaliation for their juvenile behavior.
Up here in Anchorage Alaska, we have a LPFM station running right along with the larger radio stations. In fact, one of there bumpers states "KZND, Low power and lovin it!" They play some decent music, but they have been under review by the FCC (not due to the fact that they are low power, but because 87.7 is supposed to the audio band for television channel 6). The music is decent, so I often find myself surfing over to The End .
Just my $.02 worth.
