There is Debian support for AMD64; it's currently waiting to be included into the official Debian archive once Sarge has been released (probably next week). Currently, the AMD64 port consists of an unofficial archive containing a complete 64bit binary port of both unstable and testing distributions. The AMD64 Debian site has even netinstall iso's. See http://www.debian.org/ports/amd64/

Solaris 10 zones have much better performance than UML, more comparable to Xen or FreeBSD jails. However, Xen runs only on IA32, where Solaris also does AM64 and Sparc. Xen and UML also don't support multiprocessor machines, if I'm not mistaken, and FreeBSD jails do not support things like resource managers, in case of a jail process bringing the whole machine (and other jails) down. Sun has its Fair Share Scheduler, where you can bind a container to one or more processors.

Lots of cool sounding projects names, but I still don't see a lot of exciting features. I'm under the impression that Sun is still playing catch up with other major Unix players. Dtrace, a new monitoring tool ? Sheesh, these things are already implemented by most sysadmins. Oh, and we can now dynamically create soft partitions? God, LVM had this for years. Just try increasing a partition size under Solaris8 (or 9) with Disksuite, without switching to single user mode. In HP/UX or Linux, that's just 3 or 4 commands.

I've been using APT for Conectiva, and I can tell you it's really not as good as the original.

I had a chance to run apt-rpm on Redhat, and found it quite resource hungry too : the machine had 64 Meg ram (no swap), but would not let me do the upgrade from RH 7.1 to 7.2. I have used apt on Debian for years on a machine with 12 Meg ram and 32 Meg swap, without any problems.

And some apps like KOrganizer are very impressive. And wasn't Corel's beta Office suite free to download ?

Only one thing am I missing : I have not yet found a decent project management tool. KProject has not moved along since almost 2 years, and Xopps is too leightweighted. If you happen to know one, please let me know.

Correctomundo. An uptime of > 1000 days is roughly 3 years. Using such an old kernel makes your machine vulnarable to any script kiddie being able to blast your server away.

There are other things in this summary that pose me problems :

    1. Comparing uptimes between different OSes is one thing, but you should mention also the different hardware of these systems. Comparing a i386 and a RS6K both running Linux will give you quite different results.

    2. Besides, as the Linux kernel works with jiffies, on a 32 bit arch, your uptime is limited to 497 days, not ?
