That's a pretty inspiring story! Glad to see that people with CS degrees can successfully apply their knowledge to multidisciplinary fields that aren't necessarily technical in nature.
About the problem you outlined above, it seems like the creation of the B+ tree indexes was lacking in performance? My guess is if you wanted to fix it, you would create the tree using a bulk load rather than repeated inserts into the tree. What's this "industry standard" DBMS they are using?
Well seeing as how I am a soon to be college grad with a Computer Science degree, I am hoping it will be the former case. Like all of my professors have repeatedly said over and over again in my four years in college, code is cheap, but good code is not. If you can't code, please go do something else;)
the reason there's no pr0n results is probably due to yahoo filtering the search results and making sure any page with text containing all the normal pr0n terms are not dug through. quite a disappointment? well, i'm sure if someone were to start a company that dug through all pr0n sites for direct video links, that cmpany wuld make tons of money. anyone interested? reply here!:D
What are some other relatively useful applications with very few lines of source code? Looking at the provided links, it has really gotten me interested!
don't forget that amazon has the "search inside the book" feature that has been available for a few years now. i guess the main difference is that google is targeting a lot of academic sources, while amazon gets its database of book texts from publishers. if the two were combined... then maybe they could form ibdb.com, the Internet Books Database;)
although i highly doubt they will win their side of the dispute, seems like a great publicity stunt for them and their pay-to-use service;) plus, their service is only a subset of google's service, so really it is just a clash of appropriate titles. can't google just scratch the name "google scholar"?
if many of the smaller, regional newspapers "fold" and perhaps turn to online ventures, that surely will save a lot of paper. not to mention, it would perhaps increase the journalistic qualities of many online news sources, due to the sudden inflow of competition.
Why would they suspend accounts in the first place? I've never heard of anything like this. I guess the accounts of the IM spammers could be susceptible to suspension. Other than that, what else?
why don't you check suprnova.org?
which side am i going to lay the CD down on now? do i have to stand it on its edge.....?
