  1. Re:professional tools on First Look at GIMP 2.4 · · Score: 1

Please forgive me if I'm wrong but don't most image editing functions work in float and then just clamp the results? I've been working with OpenGL and OpenEXR lately so I've been reading alot on manipulating images. From what I've read most actions work in float and then as I stated clamp the results. I'm no wizard and you obviously have more experience in this area then me, just trying to figure out if how I understand things to be correct so please be nice:D

I agree with you in some degree, the problem I run into is I like useing the Gimp for little odds and ends jobs. Don't get me wrong the Gimp is a good application, I think of it as a middle weight tool. Something like a Flame, Flint or Inferno user views Combustion. Just like svg is the rave for icons so is a 32bit enviroment for images. This is not a feature that adds bloat, its more a feature of where the world is going.

Still lacking in anything over 8bit *sigh*. Granted you have Cinepaint and PS "which is still gaysauced in 32bit imo" geting better but their still isn't that many paint or image editing applications out their. You have IFX's Amazon Paint along with a few others but not a wide selection. Only reason I seem to complain is I've latched onto ILM's OpenEXR. I've coded quite a few tools for working with OpenEXR. The whole working in a channelless enviroment is a godsend in the film compositing world I live in. Still nice to see another open source app maturing and growing. Some nice new features I'm sure users will like.

  5. A little overboard.. on Surefire Way To Stifle Innovation · · Score: 1

on the how to install Quake 3 for linux. I just upgraded to Suse 10 and reinstalled quake. Now unless some comsic ray fliped a bit on the non-ecc ram inside my head its a simple download the quake3.sh file from fileplanet.com "or whatever gameing site you frequent" and run "sh quake3.sh" in a terminal as root. Its always been that way in the many years I've installed quake 3 on my linux box.

As for makeing sure the gl drivers are installed, well more and more distros are makeing that easier. Being a Suse user I can point out YaSt makes that very simple and its no more difficult then doing it the windows way.

If you would of just said linux still has some areas that are a tad alien to normal users then I would of agreed with you. But you talked about installing a game which we all know is not that hard and the whole gl driver thing is pretty much solved on the more user friendly distros unless you use a kernel you compiled yourself which then makes your argument mute.

  6. I love my Suse on SUSE 10.0 OSS Released · · Score: 4, Interesting

I was a on and off suse user from 7.0 to 8."something". Then I left windows and stuck with suse from 9.0 to the present. I love suse for a noob distro. I like the fact that if you want to not worry about the core workings you dont have to, or if you want to not worry but still be able to learn you can. I've gradualy learned to work in the terminal more, do alot of things in the command line, compiling my applications and even started programing my own little tools in c and c++.

I'm a whatever tool works use it kinda guy and the same applys for distros. It's good to see all linux distros being updated and offering newer and better linux experiences. It's a shame Microsoft already took the slogin "Where do you want to go today?" because thats what each new version of Suse makes me think.

Forgive me for not reading up or searching for this before I type this but what about DRM mp3's? Is their such a thing and if not why hasnt anyone thought of them? I use the ITM for purchasing music and yes like most I hate the whole .mp4 files I'm buying. But lets face it your not gonna find a online music retailer that ISNT going to provide some kind of protection in the files you are purchasing, if they didnt then the music companys wouldnt let them sell them to begin with. So your gonna have to deal with protection on songs you purchase, I just wish their were more formats that HAD and were SUPPORTED like mp3's.

But you must remember most computers come PRE-INSTALLED with all the other software the makes up most of the developed for windows applications. Look at most Dell,Compaq and other brand pcs, most come with word, office ect already installed on them. So no it would not suprise me games are the most installed applications beings Doom3 isnt your average thing to come with your brand new Dell while office and word are already on it. That still doesnt mean games are the most made applications for windows.

I dont get what people mean when a browser is FASTER. Ive been a Opera user for 2 years now and unless my conception of time is off its surely not slow. Ive used just about most browsers out their being at different friends houses and the one thing Ive noticed with them all is a page loads up at just about the same speed regardless. Either its your connection, computer or the webpage most of the time, not the webbrowser. Now saying you wont pay for a browser is ones choice but I look at it like most good software I use. Ive paid for mIRC, All Seeing Eye, Opera and a few others, its just like when people donate to free software projects. If you like the app whats the gripe for supporting the people? Just in this case its a company but still the same principle. I just dont get the main complaints everyone always talks about when they mention webbrowsers, because out of all my years surfing the web a browser is a browser.
