There is a big difference between mp3 players and mobile phones. I'm willing to give up a little functionality for some glitz and fun on an mp3 player. I am willing to give up some glitz and fun to get more out of my mobile phone.
Have you been to a mobile phone store recently? Listen to the people checking out the phones. The first thing they say when looking at phone they might like to buy is "I like the way this one looks!" I remember an exchange between one couple:
Him: "Look at this one!" Her: "Meh. I like this one." Him: "But this one does more." Her: "But I like how this one looks."
Amen. Seriously, why the hell can't another company put out a product that beats the iphone? I don't even care if it costs more, just do everything the iphone does, do it just as well (meaning the clean intuitive ui, and smooth performance (all the other phones in its class lag and jerk and otherwise just clunk around), and dump the Apple lock-in and ridiculous restrictions.
Because even if they did that, they still wouldn't beat the iPhone. Apple is an unstoppable marketing machine. One need look no further than the various attempts to beat the iPod at its own game to realize this.
Other countries manage to generate growth without being such warmongers. What is it with the US and this obsession with devising new and more efficient ways to wage war?
A provider gets paid for connectivity and extra services. As Comcast now discontinues one of their services, I guess the monthly bill gets a bit trimmed as well!
Nope. We're a bunch of greedy bastards who are going to pocket the extra money we save!
If anything, I think COBOL is still hanging on because the mindset for technology is still external facing.
Yes and no. In the financial industry, for example, COBOL mainframes hang on primarily because their reliable. They're not looking for just 'three 9s'. That's because 'three 9s' just ain't good enough! These people run 24x7x365 global businesses. They can't afford to have ANYTHING go down. Ever. A missed transaction means EXTREME costs. Multiply that by the millions of transactions they do in a second, and, well, you can just forget about 'three 9s.'
Well, um....except that they do have Google text ads, and many ads from doubleclick...that would make Google one of Slashdot's paying customers.
I'm not saying Google is paying them off -- and if they are, they sure are getting a rotten deal 'cause Slashdot has run plenty of negative Google articles, in addition to the positive ones -- but saying that they aren't on Google's payroll is a little disingenuous.
Guys with beards are old-school UNIX hackers, not Windows users.
Oh, talk about stereotyping! I just happen to be an old-school Unix hacker and I just happen to have a beard, but I know lots of old-school Unix.....ha....hmph. RMS... DMR.... Ken... Alan Cox....
The RIAA's litigation campaign is in its death throes, as are the 4 big record companies who are behind it. I guess this is the way dying hyenas act, they lash out. Not to worry, they will still lose.
Yep. You can watch the same thing happening in the SCO litigation surrounding Linux. The more hopeless their case has looked, the more they've lashed out at everyone: IBM, Novell, Pamela "P.J." Jones, Unix licensees, their own customers, etc.

This exchange is not atypical at all.

You could always put the password into a text file, zip it, and password-protect the zip with their old password before you e-mailed it to them.
Duh. Obviously that wouldn't work, since they don't know their old password. You'd have to password protect the password with their new password!
whooooooosh
I heard that it's sublime!
Nope. It's dodgy.
Nope. They were outlawed there three years ago.
Unwashed walls? What? Is licking washed walls really any better?
In the sofa cushions? That's where I usually find my keys. Did NASA find their keys, too? What about the TV remote?
Yep. You should always look in the couch cushions. And under the couch. That's where I found Jesus.
That joke's really... jumped the shark?
Well, I for one welcome our new laser donning selachimorphic overlords!
Other countries manage to generate growth without being such warmongers. What is it with the US and this obsession with devising new and more efficient ways to wage war?
"Other countries"? Like who? The U.K.? The U.K. is the second-highest spender in terms of cash on defense in the entire world, second only to the United States. According the UK's Ministry of Defence, the FY 2008-09 budget for defense is £33.6 billion.
Well maybe someone should port COBOL onto a JVM, and also the rest of the mainframe style environment it needs.
You mean like this?
Exercise for the reader: work out how you're going to power the climber.
Electromagnetism. Like a monolithic train. Energy source would preferrably be solar.
OMG! Green leafy vegetables! How did it come to this? How can someone who eats rabbit food be this close to the White House?
No kidding. He looks wayyyy too good for 47. Look at how fit and trim he his! Why, it must have something to do with all that rabbit food he eats.
October 1, 1993 called. It wants its joke back.

Comcast Customer "Service"
Ack! Get that away! It might be contagious!
Been there done that.
So say we all.
Yeah, but you can tell the posers from the real deal. Real COBOL programmers have stubs where there fingers should be.

Ok. Maybe not.
BTW--if you did want or were interested in the "Catholic Apocrypha" (I'm assuming by this term, you mean the Septuagint), you can find several Greek originals and translations here.
Thus, I understand why you'd claim it's just the parents, but it's not always true and can be offensive.
That's exactly what I was trying to say, but was simply too tired to say it that way. Thanks. ;)
Congrats on the Davidson Fellowship, BTW.

Daddy wanted press, so he had little Billy say he came up with it.
And how do you know? There are very gifted 12-year-olds who are studying advanced physics at university.
