which is ironic, when your ilk attack France for not getting involved in a war that didn't involve them Um, what? Yes, Iraq directly involved France. France was making tons of money pumping oil out of Iraq and selling it to their people and to their allies. A good chunk of the oil lines that were taken over by U.S. forces weren't Iraqi oil lines, they were French oil lines. That's why the French didn't get involved.

No, you can't blame them, but you're defending France for entirely the wrong reasons.

Now that's out of the way, my point:

The GERMANS started it Yes, the Germans started WWII, but they weren't the ones that got the Japanese involved. The Japanese got involved in war before the Germans did because they saw an opportunity to attack other countries like China and also to take over islands that didn't belong to them. It was mostly due to a lack of resources. We didn't like what they were doing, so while attacking China, they bombed Pearl Harbor.

While I doubt that they "save" all the traffic, it is entirely possible, that transmitted data is scanned for certain key words and the flagged packets are then investigated further. Ummm...not likely. Take a look at this interview with Klein. He says:

"I flipped out," he said. "They're copying the whole Internet. There's no selection going on here. Maybe they select out later, but at the point of handoff to the government, they get everything."

The paragraphs above that explain what he means in technical terms (including details of the peering done here), but basically when the NSA gets it, they get everything. What the NSA does with it from there is anybody's guess, but saving everything probably seems unreasonable, but then again, how much storage does the NSA have?

Exactly. The NSA has always had cryptography as one of their charters, and as a result, they have traditionally been able to hire the best of the best in cryptography and cryptoanalysis. If the NSA says it's good enough for top secret data, believe me, at least at the time they said it, it is.

I wouldn't doubt that the NSA isn't constantly trying to break cryptos like AES 192 or 256, if, for no other reason, than to test to see if they really are that secure. One thing is for certain though -- if they knew how to break it, they certainly wouldn't tell anyone. That, in itself, would be the highest level of top secret classified information, since knowledge of breaking these algorithms would represent a threat to national security and, well, they are National Security :)
