    That's nice and all but ext3 has been shown to be slower than ext2. Not only that, it doesnt have the maturity that ffs with softupdates has. I'll have to admit the mount compability sounds neato.

    Now onto my opinion...

    ffs with softupdates is great. It has the rare combination of speed AND stability. One of major problems with that behemoth known as ext2fs is that its either slow and stable or fast and extremely unstable. While some of the "alternative" Linux filesystems fix some of the problems inherent with ext2fs, they still won't touch ffs w/ softupdates for a while.

    No, the problem is that Linux is slashdot and slashdot is Linux. Many legitimate *BSD/Sun stores are either ignored or posted on this subsection two weeks after the fact. If you rely on slashdot for anything other than SuSE/RedHat release news you're wasting your time. Oooh! Kernel 2.2.1182-preac8-test1.1 is out. Front page! Its sad. Most of us leave slashdot alone. I still have hope that it'll return to its previous glory.

    Slashdot != BSD. Keep that in mind. The money of the failing Linux IPO's fund sites like this (which were once good). Most of the "technical" discussions are gone. All the topics revolve around market-ese. It would be interesting to see a graph of the pro-linux stories exponential increase since the whole VA/Andover.net dealings while the *BSD ones all but disappear. Quality Sun based ones are often rejected only things accepted are stories about Linux/Star Wars/Gadgets. Quality means nothing any more.

    I remember way back in the day when slashdot.org was a good site. Now its boiled down into a big bbs of pimple faced 15 year old trolls who think the only purpose of the GPL is for their asses who don't have jobs. Even the stories are weak. Unless its anything Linux, Star Wars or some Gadget it goes neglected.

    Your understanding of the past is horrible son. Who says they all have to cooperate? Maybe the folks working on TrustedBSD never asked them (Theo and the gang)? Or maybe they have different aspects on security?

    IMHO, the work on TrustedBSD is useless. A bunch of security standards the govt put in place which are now 15 years dated.

    You can't forget that the masses equate MS as the guru computer company. They think the entire industry revolves around them. These people are the clueless day-traders who over-evaluate the tech stocks out there. If they think MS is in trouble, they'll invest their money elsewhere. Would the market be hurt by a MS breakup? Absolutely, only because those trendy SUV driving douchebags don't know any better and consumer confidence would drop.

    Am I the only one who finds gqmpeg the best X mp3 player? It doesn't suffer from the resource intensive aspects that XMMS does; plus its just a frontend to mpg123 (which we all know is the greatest console mp3 player)!

    FreeBSD's ipfw/natd does as well. It was merged into the tree around 2.1.x. Sorry but netfilter isn't BSD, you couldn't have been farther off there. It's being worked on but won't make it into 2.4.x for a while yet. Netfilter is going to blow away the crappy masq/ipchains but it'll still fall short of ipfw/natd and ipf/ipnat.

    Well, right now there is a concerted effort to make a unified BSD ports system, instead of separate ones for each *BSD

    Actually the very first steps have been taken to unify all the ports trees. I recall it being listed on Daily Daemonnews and Daemonnews but both sites seem to be down at the moment.

    Firstly, it's not easy to update the ports tree itself; either I'm dumb or the documentation doesn't tell you how to do it. I'd like to be able to do something like this:

    $ cd /usr/ports $ make update

    And magically, version numbers update and new packages appear.

    You can just use cvsup to update only your /usr/ports.

    Thats the intrinsic problem with books. You'll NEVER find up to the minute documentation in a printed form. Man pages are just fine for situations such as these.
