OK... Im not really a nuclear advocate per say.... I just suspect its going to be what we end up using. But comparing a baseline power source to solar(or current solar) is something I never get a straight answer to. From the article of this entire thread I cant work out if they are talking about a real baseline power source. Solar people(and frankly Im a solar person for approiate locations etc) say things like the area of only 0.1% the land mass of the world(or whatever) could power to entire world... how the hell would this work? Solar usually cannot provide contonious heavy load power.
While I dont disagree with you on energy diversity I think there is something you are neglecting. And thats the need for baseline power. Baseline power cannot be provided by solar or wind. It can by Hydro(but in most of the western world weve tapped hydro out I believe), coal/gas/fossil, nuclear or perhaps geothermal where you have the resource. There is no real getting around this problem... power companies need a baseline of power and it needs to be constant. Wind, solar etc can provide capacity for peaks etc.
I agree it isnt a simple matter and I should have probably put more thought into other mediums(books is a good one I had considered and you have a good point... book have a very different lifecycle to games film software most of the time).
But doesn't George Lucas still own the trademarks involved in Star Wars etc? In watching a new Star Wars film you(well at least I do) really want to see what the originator of the idea had in minds for the future(leaving aside the disappointing first three). If Im reading a serious by and author or watching and enjoying a film trilogy I might be interested in what other have to say on it(weather it be free fanfic or an authorised or even unauthorised professional work) but I think most people would still want to see what the original artist is saying. It like music... its not the same seeing a tribute band of a great band. Its seeing the original artist that created something you loved, and see what else they have to say.
So if some group/writer came out and did something where all wookies are gay I wouldnt care. I would simply ignore it. I suspect that it would give more weight to actual George Lucas authorised stories(stories that fit the view of his universe) than would unauthorised.
Yes but software like that is generally business software that is held internally by some business and hence not copied at all(commercial in confidence protect it etc). The only bits of the industry that would have to worry would be things like games and other shrink wrapped software. Personally Id feel fine is say MS office feel out of copyright every five years as I dont think it would really affect anyone... MS would simply release a new version(Is office 95 really worth anything to anyone these days)?
Games could be a problem as they seem to like to release platinum editions of older games and I honest have no idea how much that brings in for the games industry... its probably a nice little earner they wouldnt like to lose. But on the other hand it could solve the problem of abandonware... games Id still like to play but cant because I cant physically purchase it anywhere.
For other sectors like niche vertical market sector software developers(Ive worked in such and industry) they are generally doing pretty bespoke stuff and being used as a service provider to their clients.
Id be honestly interested if anyone has any examples of really bad things happening in any sector of the software development world. Settop boxes for sat and cable TV perhaps? If you argue that the software on the sim code falls out of copyright every five years then whats to stop you duping a bunch for your friends.
Yes but the legacy standard is clearly documented in the most unambiguous way the standards body and try to come up with. Even if the software is no longer widely used or exists it is much easier to go to a standards document and write new conversion software that recreate a reverse engineering solution on a format that no one left alive know the details of.
You know. Sometimes I think they do it on purpose. Ive just gotten thru trying to figure out how to secure Server 2003 for some slightly out of the normal configuration and had to read thru a few extremely obfuscated KB articles... its like they are actively trying to make it difficult to do things properly.
And of course you can always simply cast an invalid vote. Ive done it before in Australian elections. I wrote the vote counter a poem... a haiku actually...
They aren't going to pop up everywhere, for the same reason that you don't have regular speakers everywhere, its annoying, and already illegal in most places.
Meh... you are joking right? People siad the same thing about the annoying bluetooth broadcasts from posters. If it seems to work then of course it will show up everywhere. I say all this as a Londoner... no idea where you are from... but if it work in time square then next it will work in Picadilly Circus and Soho and then beyond.
The pubs around Angel and Islington used to have a thing called the Dont Panic kit. It was an envelope for of flyers and vouchers for stuff in the Angel area. Ive no idea weather they got permission or not but the lettering on the envelope was very reminiscent of the letter on the UK version of the original HHGTTG.
The story I heard was that gropecunt lane was a generic term appied at one point all over the country. Not just threadneedle(tho thats the most famous). The only remaining one left is in Kent and has been change to just be grope lane.
If any street in London is to be renamed it must be in Islington. As a resident of the area DNA used to live Id suggest one of the side streets off upper street... maybe near Hotbalck Desiatos(for those that dont know thats a real estate agent... the real estate agent came first). How does one get the ball rolling on renaming a street in London? Id be up for a petition or whatever. Actually Ive come over quite serious all of a sudden. If anywhere has a street named after Douglas then it should be in Islington. If anyone has any ideas please mail be at kilgoretrout11235@yahoo.com
Oh and did you know threadneedle st used to be a gropecune lane?
Errr. What? Because a desktop application that runs on every major desktop platform(very well I might add) cant automagically run on a memory limited device then java is a failure?
Mod this guy up. I just got a +4 and all I was basing it on was my listening to the DVD commentary(which is prolly one of the best commentaries on a DVD Ive heard[other than spinal tap]). "That guy" has talked to Groening:) All hail the return of futurama. The only TV show(other than Dr Who) I really watch.
If you listen to the DVD commentaries(yes I am a futurama fan... one of those that DXC thanks in TFA... no problem Dave) I get the distinct impression you are correct. Cohen seems to be the head day to day management of the show guy and Groening comes in time to time with advice and suggestions... Greoning seems to be the one that deals with the boneheads at Fox(prolly cause he has the showbiz clout)
was pretty much forced to disable texting on my own cellphone because it got a ton of junk texts on it (recycled number?), and didn't feel like paying either the $10 unlimited texting option nor felt like paying $0.10 for each unsollicited message
I think this statement sums up the weirdness that non Americans feel about your cell phone billing systems. Something like what you describe should really be illegal.
This reminds me of an old client off mine. I used to write software for access control and security and one military client had a duress system in the main guard room. It consisted of two duress buttons and a duress code on the keypad I think. When either of the duress buttons or the duress code were entered it triggered a paging system to call a number and play a duress message of the for "The guards at are under duress. Please send assistance". The problem was that the paging unit was mounted on the wall in the guard room and the powers that be had misplaced the maul for it. It was currently set to place the message over its own speaker as well as down the phone line(this was done for test purposes) and nobody could work out how to switch the speaker off. The guards mentioned this to me that it had been like that for years and they didnt know what theyd do if they ever were under duress... I earned my pay that day and got some embarrassed looks when I suggest that they simple disconnect the speaker... security guard are the brightest bunch.
I think this is a case where the Harry Potter junkie should have the government standing behind them. I say this as a pretty non big gevernment type of guy I might add.
LHR is busiest in terms of the number of *international* people that travel through it per year. This is not terribly surprising as it is a gateway airport to the the US and Europe. There are a bunch of busy airport claims around the world. I recall hearing that Atlanta was the busiest airport for the number of people(national and international) which I could believe as I think it is a hub for several major US carriers. From the number of actual flight in and out of an airport O'Hare often claims it is number one as I think along with people a lot of cargo is routed thru O'Hare.
With regards to opposing the terminal 4 expansion plan this really really needs to be done. Also its not as bad as you think I suspect as once terminal 4 is opened they are apparently going to demolish terms 1 and 2(a good thing... I hate those terminals) and possibly build a terminal 5.
Everyone is always opposing airport expansion... and yet they still want to take a cheap flight to Warsaw for the weekend:) I come from Australia originally where for decades the city of Sydney has been in need of a third runway. Everyone agrees it needs a third runway. Its just nobody wants it build next to them. In my home town of Canberra they were even proposing expanding Canberra airport to be the third runway and building a high speed rail link to Sydney... Canberra is 300km south of Sydney.
Thank you for the correction. Thatll teach me to post on slashdot while coding at the same time :) Please mode this person up.

What if the fee went up geometrically for each five year period :)

I hate dash your hopes. But I have seen legal documents all over the place in Word format.

We should hence encourage hot young women into the disciplines of Physics.

somehow you accidently recreated somebody else's copyrighted work without any knowledge of the original, I doubt that you could use that as a defense.
Why not? Who invented The Calculus? No idea is 100% unique dude.

Second. I use FF on a daily basis on OS X, Windows and linux and the memory problem is the worst on the mac.
