Ahhh Last.FM, another service that has become worse and worse with the time.
When I first started using last.fm it was possible to create a radio station by specifying two or more artists. The actual music played was quite good. Then after some time, Last.FM had to break that feature constraining the radio creation to only one artist. Then they removed the ability to play the free radio outisde USA,, UK and Germany. Additionally, I kept getting more and more unrelated (and crappy) music after a very short time listening to a station. It seems the selection of Last.FM music is quite small in Speed and Progressive Metal.
Nowadays I use Grooveshark for my music needs and could not be happier.
That sucks... I used to have a PRISM shortcut to open a Live Excel spreadsheet which I used to annotate daily tasks (pomodoro style) online without having to open the whole browser. Unfortunately it does not work with the minefield builds anymore.
One of the reasons technologies do not "mature" is because developers keep jumping between different alternatives after they get "bored" with the current ones:(.
IIRC Antivirus software is divided in the "app engine" and the "virus signatures" so, Kaspersky might be using the same engine that is in the source code but only updated the virus signatures in the new versions.
Blah blah, Karma disclaimer so that I don't get modded down blah blah.
Sony's reaction was completely over-the-top and illegal.
Actually no, Sony's reaction is literally not illegal. They have the right to ask for such and such restraining orders. Even the judge agreed that it was legal (the fact that he/she gave the order shows that). That does not mean it was morally wrong; but hey, you should work to change the laws in your country.
On the other hand, what GeoHot did might be illegal in the USA. IIRC team twiizers did the "definite" work to hack the PS3 and showed it in here in Germany (where it is not illegal) and they explicitely said they won't make the key available (or something like that)... and then GeoHot came and put the key on his homepage defying Sony..."So Sue Me"; well, here you go, he got what he was looking for.
Of course I can only hope that reason will be held in court and Sony gets their ass bitch-slapped.
Yah... I thought the same and was actively boycotting Sony since the Rootkit fiasco (I even had my 5 minute fame while fighting those bastards).
I did it until I wanted to buy an ebook reader. I waited and looked for all the options; I compared the Kindle vs the Sony eReader. Surprisingly, Sony's ereader is more open than Kindles (e.g. copy/paste PDFs, DOCs ePubs into SD Card [yes SD-card]) and the quality was quite good. Originally I waited for the Asus DR-900, which I saw at the ceBit 2010 (it was a good surprise when I was there... nobody gave attention but as a loyal asus customer.... i liked what I saw).
But after waiting for almost one year, this last christmas I decided to fuck it and go for it. I got a PRS 950SC and could not be happier. It is a really neat piece of hardware that has me completely hardwired into my books.
BTW... I was also surprised that product quality-wise Sony is not that bad... of course Asus is better =oP
I like Linux and have found Ubuntu to be the best "no frills" distribution, even though it has several rough edges. When I first started using Linux (around 1998) I preferred KDE, however KDevelop always felt crappy (crashed a lot and felt as if you had to fight against it to do stuff, compared to say Code::Blocks, DevCpp or Visual Studio).
However, KDE4 made it die a horrible death. Additionally, the lack of a good distribution that had KDE well integrated as a default (that used to be Mandrake IIRC.... and maybe SuSe). Nowadays, the abortion that is Kubuntu, the lack of focus of Mandriva and the general suckiness of RPM make me think twice before moving out of Ubuntu.
BTW talking about broken, does anyone else experience this same Slashdot bug: Click on the "Score:3 Interesting" at the right side of comment title to show the "Moderation Detail" window of the comment. Now close the window only to be taken back tot he top of the page. WTF is that?
If people do not want to have results from their incomplete searches on the screen as they type they must turn off Google Instant.
What Google is actually doing is prioritizing the display of certain search terms which are common (and should appear at the top of the search) due to a request by a third party. So, what is next? they will stop showing Tea Party movement web pages because the current government asked nicely. Even though I do not share the TeaParty principles (shit, I am a "leftist, socialist, populist, brownist" Mexican) I expect a search engine not to censor certain results just because someone asked.
As a non-native speaker who likes to watch movies in their original version I can tell you that subtitles in 3D movies do not work. The reason is basically that you have to put the subtitles always at the front of the scene; this means that when you have a scene with objects popping out, subtitles *must* be in front of that and later you can return the to the "normal" depth. This of course is very tyring for the eyes.
Fortunately for me I understand English and can avoid reading the subtitles.
THIS! I am reading right now in my netbook (Chrome browser) and in the default size fonts are very small. After I zoom in I get a horizontal scroll bar as text does not reflow:(.
Why does designers keep fighting with somethign that is a feature of HTML???
Also the logo is degraded, too small, this is major design error
So... subtly they removed the "News for Nerds, Stuff that Matters" motto; this means they are reinforcing their past years trend of adding whatever news "nerds" don't care about.
Of course we could see that coming... when CmdrTaco was a young "geek/hacker" all he cared to put in his web-log was nerdy stuff... right now he des not care about that, instead he cares about more mainstream stuff...
We should transform nerd.reddit.com into what/. used to be:P
There is a keyboard shortcut to every function in Word. What's the keyboard shortcut to add a top header in open office. What about changing spacing before a paragraph? These are all easily accessible and discoverable by pressing the alt key.
Ugh, and they are different in each language... E.g., Bold Face font - English is CTRL+B - German is ALT+SHIFT+F - Spanish is CTRL+N
it's about bringing EVERY function to the forefront. Like I said, I can probably access 90% of Word's functionality with 3 clicks.
Using traditional menus you can access 90% of Word's functionality with 3 clicks: Click 1: Select one of the menu-bar options and show sub-menu Click 2: Select one of the options of the newly shown submenu. The majority of times that' all you have to do but if not... Click 3: Select any option from the sub-menu displayed after click-2.
Honestly, the only people I know who complain about the ribbon have invested a lot of energy memorizing shortcuts. It seems everyone else who is a casual user of Word, or never used it before love the Ribbon.
I have used the ribbon (Office Live ) in a daily basis and use the menu interface in Office 2003 also daily. For me, the ribbon is just a different way to present menus (tabs) and sub-menus (inside the ribbon "toolbar") after shuffling the grouping and order of the tools. At the end, they had to resort to the ugly "office icon" hack to provide "miscelaneous" features.
I thought that docx files (which are open and basically XML that anyone can see) would be opened fine with Open/LibreOffice but the last one I tried to open (about 1 month ago) was a complete crap. The problem is that there are several features that OOo and LO do not have and are used in docx (e.g., commenting and document changes tracking)
Some time ago (2 or 3 years) I had to do some calculations and statistics in a spreadsheet. I found Gnumeric to be better than the OpenOffice version at that time.
Moreover, I don't think a guy who has experience in directing "geeky technology" companies (Sun, Novell, Google) is a good replacement to direct a company about "cool and shiny technology", one focuses on functionality, the other focuses on beauty (e.g., remember Jobs inspiration for his approach is partly from diamonds and ring sellers).
I think the problem lays basically in that people want to make movies to become rich.
So, if 25 people worked for 1 year to make a movie for $40,000, you will need a movie that could get $1'000,000 or $2'000,000 to cover the cost of the "tools". This same people would have to make a new movie the next year in order to obtain their same $40,000 yearly salary.
The issue I have with that is that usually people in front of the camera are overpaid. OK, I agree that Mr. Pitt or Mr. DiCaprio are good actors, but getting 20 million per movie is outrageous.
Hah!, tell that to my wife. She still thinks that dressing up and going to the cinema (after a dinner) is somewhat special... So even if we got the best home theater available she would miss going to the cinema to see a film.
Aside of that, I could imagine that not all people want to wait a month or so to watch the movie legally at home.

The sites only free because it's covered in advertising. If that were illegal, wouldn't that make the entire internet illegal?
Advertising?, what advertising?
*clicks on adblock*
Ahem, not that I have been to redTube, no sire.
PP obviously hasn't had a one night stand or he would know that there is.
You mean that one night stand you got after going to the movies, dinner and having a drink?
Nope, I am certain it cost you absolutely nothing.

I hope that this fork encourages the inclusion of Go-OO patches. In fact, it would be good if Go-OO and LibreOffice were merged .
