Carmack was a true believer, and his (late) heresy is a sign that MS alternatives in some fields are just ... quixotic.

Claiming that alternatives to MS in the game world are quixotic is simply delusional. There is exactly one segment that MS dominates in the game world and that is Windows gaming, the importance of which is steadily declining.

So, this week PC gaming is declining?
IIRC last week we argued that PC gaming was increasing and has becamed better than console gaming due to the aging consoles specs.

And you know... PC gaming == Windows gaming

It's a little like that. Right now most of the fighting is between Javascript and rendering speed. Javascript performance is definitely no longer a bottleneck

It depends in what you want to achieve. I still perceive difference between running Google docs in Chrome vs running it in Firefox 4 b13pre (it is noticeably slower in the later). And currently none of the spreadsheet web programs have complex equations, references, macros, etc.

Not that I am in favour forcing software to run in a scripted environment (I prefer native apps) but hey, there is always a market for everything.

This reminds me of that software created by an team from India which "beautified" faces of several persons based on some standard definition of "beautiful"... funny that there are no commercial versions of such a program.

  12. Re:Kinda missing the point on Watson Wins Jeopardy Contest · · Score: 1

You know what made it worth it for me? that even if Wason was 10% slower and he needed some extra time to OCR /speech-rec, Watson could stay a whole week 24/7 constantly answering questions and its performance won't decrease. I think *this* is a very important difference, and what makes Watson very valuable.

  13. Yup, pure PR on Watson Wins Jeopardy Contest · · Score: 1

The other day I saw a documentary about Deep Blue vs Kasparov. One of the comments was that at the time of the chess match, IBM was seen as this "office furniture provider" whereas Microsoft, Apple, (SUN?) and others where seen as the technology innovators.

Thus, they decide to make this challenge as a press stunt. Of course, they have to ensure that their machine wins so that they get all the "glory". In the documentary I saw, they comment about all the issues that surrounded the game.

  14. Disappointed by Second and Third Options on Watson Wins Jeopardy Contest · · Score: 1

I was kind of disappointed by the second and third options (the ones not selected). Because they show that Watson answers are purely based on syntactic properties and not semantic. For example in the question:
"Name the Decade - DISNEYLAND OPENS & THE PEACE SYMBOL IS CREATED" Watson second and third answers were "Kingdom" and "It's a small world" which are completely irrelevant to the *meaning* of the subject at hand.

This means that, when Watson is wrong, it is usually *very* wrong. It also means that its reasoning mechanism does not allow it to give an approximation.

Take for example, if you asked him... what color is the bottom of the sea? Watson would most likely tell you "Red Sea Fan???" or maybe "black dragonfish???" because such answers are syntactically related to "color" "bottom/deep/end" "sea/water/ocean". Whereas a person not knowing the real answer would tell you "Blue???", or "Black???".

Even though I play the real guitar, I enjoyed playing RockBand with my brother and her girlfriend. In general I think it is quite entertaining, and is something anyone can do.

For me, the secret was in that you could enjoy a song while "doing something". And in some cases, it was nice to have a well varied set of songs to choose. That way all the players get to listen a song they like (e.g., I get to listen to Judas Priest, my mom gets to listen to the Beatles, my wife gets to listen to The Killers, etc...).

I think the main revenue stream should be focused on making songs available. This, instead of trying to sell a new piece of plastic (instrument) every year... which gets more and more complex to use.
