I do think that Java is an outdated language that always seemed unfriendly to users and caused a lot of extra cost/headache to my customers when every software company we supported seemed to attempt to create a Java app to access their software engines.
How can you call it an "outdated" language? what is an outdated language? Ada is an outdated language, BASIC may be another.
I like Java (as a language) a lot, I have used it for enterprise level applications (supply chain management software) and currently I am using it to make market based simulations.
The wrong thing about Java is the Virtual machine implementation. You can blame Sun for that. If Java is slow, grabs lots of memory and all that it is because of the virtual machine, not because of the language. A language is just a BNF diagram specification which describes the syntax of the program, and all of its reserved words.
What Java needs is a better (less memory and faster) implementation of the libraries it has and the virtual machine to run the programs. As an example, almost everyone who has used C# or any other.NET program can see the applications run quite fast.
I personally think Mr. Linus Trovalds should shut the fuck up and get back to the Kernel mailing lists. What the fuck gives him authority to go into a Desktop List saying what and what not should be done?. And moreover there is no fucking way he has any authority on the DESKTOP USUABILITY aspects of a graphical desktop environment?.
For the love of god, he is just a OS nucleus developer, he has no freaking sense about graphical interfaces. He should just stick patching and maintaining the kernel and leave the task of graph. interface design to others.
Having said that, I still dont understand what is the newsworthy part of some buddy's preferences of graphical desktop environment. I do not care if it happens to be the Linux, FreeBSD, Apple or even MS Windows lead kernel programmer... none of them have any authority on the USER INTERFACE... shees KDE & GNOME run on the top of X-Window which can run on the top of a BSD, Unix, Linux and OSX kernel...
Bah, dont worry, the only thing they will get is that the next BritneySpears.FuckMeHard.ReleasedByDevil.mp3.192.r ar Emule file will include the lyrics. This will give more value to the illegal versions of the music (because they will have lyrics, covers and non-DRM music against no-lyrics-booklet, DRM-and-what-not CD).
And of course, for those of you who do not know, it is possible to download text files or any other kind of files from emule, so I guess if they start to close the Lyrics/Tabs networks, we will start seeing lyrics.txt files on the mule. (I have seen mysongbook powertab tabs already there IIRC).

It's a small price to pay for free advertising. Find a story, summarize it in 5 minutes, post to slashdot, and get a pagerank boost that advertisers would pay hundreds (or maybe thousands) for. (Text links on high-ranking sites is big business - just ask oreilly).
Slashdot should at least put a ref=nofollow in the links to submitters (or better yet, only link the submitter's name to his/her user page).
In closing, a quick bit of WHOIS shows that all the sites linked by **B-B are registered to Carl Fogle. Carl, cut this crap out.
Bummer... it is patented in the USA... but not in other countries whahoo!! I for one hope it is not patented in Mexico, and anyway, IIRC, there will be some changes in our constitution which make medical patents last only for 5 years or something like that (currently only last 10 years).
So, think about it!, go to Mexico, get a Cancer treatment and go to the beach =o).
...and it is a dream for application developers to be able to rely on a preinstalled component to handle the playing of video's.
And there is where the operating system services should come handy. Instead of providing a Media Player an Internet Browser the Operating System manufacturer should concentrate in creating a set of tools and APIs that can be used by developers to create END USER software to watch media and navigate internet.
Think about something like KHTML engine or what DirectX [DirectMedia] is supposed to do. As an operating system manufacturing you should provide the tool for application developers. And concentrate on doing that RIGHT.
Maybe the controller secret have something to do with the Nintendo DS. If I recall correctly the Gameboy Advance could be connected to the GameCube to improve its functionallity.
Think about connecting your DS to the Revolution to take all your pre N64 (mmm or even the N64) with you on the DS.
And aside of that, they will have a touch pad input device for the Revolution.
Just a little thought, early today I read this article at bit-tech as I wanted to see how was the Xbox 360 relase going in the UK. I find the review quite interesting. Specifically this snipet:
We hooked up via composite to a standard definition 20" LCD TV, a standard definition 30" CRT and a high definition 26" widescreen LCD panel. Frankly, the 360 looked atrocious with the composite. Colours bled everywhere, games were upscaled horrendously... the whole visual experience was frankly no better than the first Xbox. We'd go so far as to say that if you are limited to hooking up your 360 via SCART or composite in standard definition (eg with a 'normal' TV), don't even bother buying it. It looks bad.
Now, I am from Mexico and as far as I know, our buying power does not let the HDTV's be in the mainstream now (the Joe Average TV is a standard CRT 22''). I know that here in the UK people are wealthier but I was wondering in the USA how was it? does everybody have HDTV these days?
If that is not the case, some other parts of this same review state about the Project Gotham Racing were interesting as well: The Gotham gameplay is still there and, to be honest, little has changed in that department. There's still the same races, the same Kudos Challenges, cone runs and the like - all the things we've come to know and love from Gotham. It's a little sad that there's no new gameplay mechanics, but then, I suppose we can't have everything.
So, no mayor changes in these games besides of the graphics uh? that means there is no REAL reason to buy the X360 if you do not have HDTV.
As for the Xbox, yep I think I may get one from Ebay after returning from vacations (2 weeks to Cancun and my country!! weeee). I was thinking it getting a GameBoy Advance from Ebay, as I will travel like 10 hours =oS, and they are very cheap these days (£15!!).
Personally I am waiting for the Revolution. I am no Nintendo fan, in fact my last console was a Xbox that I had to sell before coming to UK. But as I have no £££££ to spare in the 3 consoles, I guess I have to wait and see what will they do. And I am certainly waiting for the Revolution new controller, if not to play Nintendo's game, to plug it into my computer and make my game programmer imagination fly =o)
Why can't the Mozilla Software Foundation allt the 6300 Firefox Bugs? instead, they have to release a "new" version... just freeze the freaking lreleases and patch your bugs!
One of the reasons of this difficulty (at least for me) is in software documentation:
Analysis, Requirements specifications document. Design: Design Specification document [with or without UML, DTDs, etc]. Quality control/assurance: (Quality testing metrics documents).
Nobody (at least not programmers) likes to spend their time doing that, which results in a lot of good Open Source projects (just look at sf.net) that have only the source code available. So, when/if someone wants to start helping (be it a programmer or a non programmer) they must dive into the source code, reverse engineer it and (to their better understanding) see how is the program working.
When developing a propietary software for anyone, documentation is the one most important thing, and often the one that programmers hate to do. That is why System designers are better paid than programmers.
In open-source world, nobody cares about documenting [and mantaining the domcumentation] of their software. My personal experience is with VirtualDimension [sourceforge.net] multi-desktop software. I wanted to enhance the program with some ideas I had, but I hated that the only place to understand how it worket was the CVS repository C++ files. Although I know C++ (and I am good at it if-u-ask-me) it is the "logic" of the program what I wanted to find and, well, my time is worth more than what I needed to understand the inners of the program.
The same happened with jabref [slashdot.org]. I would like to contribute to those projects with programming, but bah, at the end, all of them are just a mess.
I am from Mexico and currently living in UK. Every sunday, my mom and I talk in Skype. I find the video thing nice. As I would have the chance to see her, and to see my little poochies (3 dogs) too. And also show my family how are things here in the overpriced market paradise land.

2. Design, yes. Unfortunately, Graphic Designers and man/manchine interface developers do value their time. That is why the design of Oper Source programs is usually terrible. And that is why you can not compare what a bunch of programmers do with their free time with a real product. Hint, the big software corporations products have several different departments besides of the programming department.
Of course there are certain programs which have an Ok design, like OpenOffice, (darn, I could not think of another) but of course the majority of those programs (and of the big good OpenSource programs) had its core donated from a profit organization.
About your comment on the comparison of FF against IE6. comparing Firefox with IE6 is like comparing the intelligence of a 30 year old to that of a 13 year old. "I'm way smarter than you because I've had more time to acquire knowledge!"
I think it does not hold. If firefox is better than IE6 it is because of the developing model of the two programs and because as everybody knows Microsoft did not cared about updating their product after they killed Netscape. I have just looked at the new features on IE7 and it seems quite nice. I am sure, when it arrives it will be a lot better than Firefox. The same with MS Office new version, after it arrives and people start using the "tabbed" menu interface, OpenOffice will seem archaic with its 10 menu/100 submenues interface.
That Open Source will copy the interface, that, everybody knows. Unless there is some kind of I.P. lock that Microsoft holds (which I hope not).
I would like to think that one day wine will actually be better at running Windows software than Windows itself is. This is possible because while Microsoft is intentionaly breaking compatability between releases,
Have you seen Windows code? or you are getting this from the bottom of your ass?, Comeon, dont say something just to sound clever... you do not sound clever.
Often programs actually run faster in wine as well, since the linux kernel generally manages things better. Ofter, actually, generally. So, I can conclude from your post that you do not know a shit, and you are only trolling.
While I can not deny anything that you are saying, neither can you show proofs about it. All that "windows software is not version compatible" is shit. Microsoft makes all the effort to make the applications for previous plataforms work on the current ones. Something open source developers does not care.
No way I will download something from those Sweden pirates sites! OMG! you will be visited by the MPAA soon! =oP
Anyway, just for the sake of completness, I was just looking at the "Roadmap" for Firefox 2.0,3.0. It seems that the once "sleek, fast and stand alone browser" will continue to be bloated and bloated with features.
Why, o why dont the just freeze the 1.5 release and try to fix EVERY bug in the bugzilla database!
For example, I have installed the 1.5 version, and still the Find function does not work as expected on multiple frames (Java Api Documentation). There has been a bug filed on bugzilla for quite some time now (one year IIRC).
The difference is in the bugs. After a software prodcut has entered the RC stage all the development is freezed and only bug fixing code modification is allowed.
