Interestingly, this is the same processor I told my brother to get for his new computer. He asked me to help him to buy a new computer to make Audio/Video processing. (From Video capturing to DVD writing). Of course the main constraint is the money, as the compuer should be around $1000.00

I am not very savy on hardware but for what I know I could give him what I think is a good deal:

CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3200+ Processor

    Mobo:Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe Motherboard
memory: Corsair 1GB PC3200 DDR DIMM Memo
HD: Seagate Barracuda 7200.8 200GB Hard Drive
Video: ATI Radeon 9800 Pro All-In-Wonder Video Card

As you can see almost all of the components are "best minus one[or two] - generation". And it is AMD based.

I had to spend some time convincing him that the Atlhon 64 2.0 GHZ was better than a Peintum 4 2.5 Ghz. (I may be stating a fallacy but I do not tend to fall into the "megaherz wars").

One of the main things to note is that from what I saw, the motherboards for Intel Based processors (at least the Asus ones) are better than the AMD based. This pisses me off, because I like Asus mobos a lot but I think Intel processors are overpriced.

I think the Motherboard is something that a lot of people underestimate. I tend to think that although the "common" computer today usually uses a P4 2.0Ghz, the "common" motherboard has a 400mhz bus (or even a 133mhz bus). As I wrote before, I do not know a lot of hardware architecture but I think that 5:1 (2000 to 400) ratio must be a bottleneck in some way.

I am currently developing a game which plan to release as commrecial. I am working with SDL+OpenGL, and some other libraries. I am working under Windows/DevC++.

    mygame.exe
    sdllibrary.dll

Now, if I want to deploy it on linux I need to tell the user "you must have SDL library version X.yz of SDL library and xx.yy of other library". I am looking for a way to statically compile all the code that I use into my .bin executable so I dont have to depend on anything. I am sure this can be done, as IIRC on C you can link statically the functions you use (like puts, printf, etc). I would like to do the same, I dont care ending with a huge .bin (or .exe) file.

Mi país se llama Estados Unidos Mexicanos, y el nombre (al igual que en EEUU) viene de la división política. Hey asshole, just for your knowledge, I am from Mexico and although it is difficult for you to get it I am also American. That the fucking gringos call themseleves "Americans" is just because their country lacks of a real name. United States of America? don't you know what does that means? it means a Set of "states" that are Where?, in America.

My country is called "Estados Unidos Mexicano" (Mexican United States or United states of Mexico), and the name (as USA name) comes from the political structure division of the states. The only people that name "American" to the persons of USA is themseleves. We [Mexicans] call them "Estadounidenses" (something on the lines of USenians] (or fucking gringos), Canadians name you "People from USA". What guilt do we have that your country does not have a proper name?

Now, it is perfect for me that you call yourself American, indeed you are correct, what I can not stand is that you (the gringos) are the only ones that have the right to be called "Americans"

Inded, OpenOffice 2.0 is a great product, I saw the release story sooner today at OSnews as I said here

Now I wonder the following, in about 6 months or so, Microsoft will "unveil" its new Office suite (it may be in a Beta), along with the new Windows Vista technology. What does this has to do with OpenOffice you may ask, well, as I can see right now in the OO.o document I am writting, the interface of OO is (as all the interfaces in ALL the OS right now) "menu" driven.

As stated on thi link the new version of Microsoft Office will have a completely different option selection approach, and after looking at some Windows Vista reviews it seems MS will make a lot of programs share this "Tab based" approach.

I have never liked the menu based interface (from ANY of the programs) where you have to navigate around 10x10x10 submenues to be able to find how to "crop" a part of the image (really try to do it in OO 2.0, just press PRINTSCREEN key then paste the clipboard to the OOo document and try to crop the bottom and top of it).

My point is, it seems (and I am just waiting for it) what will happen is that applications will try to catch on with this new "tab based" option selection interface, and the question will be Is OpenOffice.org going to change that? , or more to the point, will OpenOffice copy the new MSOffice options selection behaviour?.

That will be an interesting issue, when the new MS Windows Vista comes with these approach, It will be nice to see how does that "affects" the OpenSource software relases (Linux distros, OSS software on windows, etc). And then we will see the real "influence" of Windows and MS over OSS.

I hope Slashdot does not take this as trolling, I am glad OpenOffice has come to what it is (I used it sometime when it was StarOffice 5.0 and they gave freecd's[or at least I got one for free =oP]). [Un]fortunately currently I use Latex as text creating package, and I do not have a lot of touch with any kind of WYSIWYG office documents. But, I do have installed OpenOffice and it has come a very long way.

There are legitimate encyclopedia citations... These citations include simple, unamibguous facts,

I am sure it is possible to do encyclopedia citation but in the academia you just won't do it. When you cite a fact or definition it is expected that you cite (at least) a book that is considered the standard in the subject.

As an example, I remember I was working with a person who had a PhD on Neural Networks, and, I was doing an implementation of the CMAC NN on C++/Java.

I had to make a presentation and one of the initial slides talked about the general Neural Network definition etc. I remember I made a reference to some book (read, an actual book) which I used to get some basic definitions of neural networks. When I showed the presentation to my boss he told me to change the reference because "that is not a reference you would use for definitions" and gave me the reference to an author which was supposed to be the author on NN.

Back then, I though, bah!, what is the difference, but now I understand it quite better. I am currently making a PhD on Multiagent Systems, and I know that, when giving a definition of an "Agent", I should provide a reference to Norvig & Russel [Artificial Intelligence: A Modern Approach], and when giving a definition of Multiagent systems, Wooldrige would be OK, or Jennings.

Maybe you do not understand it, but the quality of your references say a lot. And, also, if you give those references you are helping the reader by providing him a reference where he could read more about it.

As an actual example, let me quote the following:

""...professional investment may be likened to those newspaper compe-titions
in which the competitors have to pick out the six prettiest faces
from a hundred photographs, the prize being awarded to the competi-tor
whose choice most nearly corresponds to the average preferences
of the competitors as a whole; so that each competitor whose choice
most nearly corresponds to the average preferences of the competitors
as a whole: so that each competitor has to pick, not those faces which
he himself finds prettiest, but those which he thinks likeliest to catch
the fancy of the other competitors, all of whom are looking at the
problem from the same point of view. It is not a case of choosing
those which, to the best of one's judgement, are really the prettiest,
nor even those which average opinion genuinely thinks the prettiest.
We have reached the third degree where we devote our intelligences
to anticipating what average opinion expects the average opinion to
be. And there are some, I believe, who practise the fourth, fifth and
    higher degrees."

And now, I could provide you with 2 references:
    @TECHREPORT{RePEc:ysm:somwrk:ysm346,
AUTHOR={Stephen Morris and Franklin Allen and Hyun Song Shin},
TITLE={Beauty Contests, Bubbles and Iterated Expectations in Asset Markets},

And lets not talk about "hibernating", yesterday I left it hibernating because I left some firefox tabs+eclipse IDE and Texniccenter projects opened and I didnt wanted to reopen it all today, when I turned it on I had to wait the same time for the thing to "resume".

On a serious note, all the comments I have read here tend to say "do not turn off the computer" but the truth is that the standard person wants to turn off its computer appliance the same way they turn of their DVD or their TV or their washing machine! you do not expect that you have to wait for 10 mintues after you plug your microwave to use it uh? or what about your TV?, for that reason I think that fast booting (after hibernate or a complete turn off) is something good.

And on a side note, how are Linux booting times?, the last time I ran Fedora Core 4 it waited until the eth0 interface was ready, I think they should solve the Linux startup times, really, just put a checkbox option on the distribution installer that says "Enable Fast Startup" turned on by default!!! please!. I know it is possible to recompile the init.rc file with a --asyncronous-start option (or whatever) but I need to be able to select that option on the installer as I do not have time to hack into the initd and its friends.
