All well and good... but I fail to understand why was this summary accepted instead of the more appropiate and insightful summary submitted by NewYorkCountryLawyer?
In fact, the problem isn't finding jobs, the problem is finding programmers.
Hey, then maybe you can employ me. I just earnt a Computer Science PhD. I have about two years of programming experience (that is, programming in a real company) and have been programming since I was about 10. I do Java, C, C++ (a bit) and Linux scripting (awk, bash, etc). Oh, as I am a Mexican, I speak Spanish natively, and also speak and write very well in English (I wrote my PhD Thesis in English after all...)
Unfortunately I can not find a suitable job:(... here in Mexico we are very very very underpaid... and yes, I am willing to move almost anywhere (except the horrendous Mexico City)
You installed "early Beta" software before it was even a day old and then call Google "evil" for some bug in the uninstaller?
I hate how Google apologists have taken over slashdot. Why do people try to make less of an issue that Google has produced a crappy project (with a terrible license IMHO).
No, the browser is not a day old, it is not as if they just sat a bunch of their programmers on the 1st of September to do develop the web browser. I am sure it has been developed since a very long time.
Similarly to IE 8 and to Firefox 3. What this goes to show is that in their urge to show to people whatever next "cool product" they will have, Google has published a half assed version of a program when it is not even BETA.
A Beta product is a product that is maybe 80% complete (if not more) and ready to be tested by people *outside* the company/close developing group.
I felt tempted to mod down all the google apologists (they are so annoying) but gah, I would be making a wrong use of my mod points... I rather write this rant.
Really, talking about game copy protection as an example does not help.
Game studios are one of the companies most reluctant to drop such client annoying technology.
Game copy protection has been for a very very long time and is still alive.
Goig more ontopic, I have always thought that AllOfMp3 was ahead of its time, maybe 10 years ahead of its time. Not technologically, but "corporatically".
The sad part, is that AllOfMp3 showed us that it is possible to do lots of wonders with technology, wonders that could make life more confortable, but due to corporativsm greed, we have to wait until people and corporations grow to understand the way things should be done.
The next step of course will be a USA company (say Amazon or Apple) starting to offer music in several lossless or lossy formats as AllOfMp3 did.
Then you did not understand it. I'm sure you're doing all kinds of wonderful things with your R4,
haha You really should read my post.
I don't have an R4 but a CycloDS Evolution and it is a really neat piece of technology.
:) Other than that, yeah I guess I took it to personally. The bad thing about trying to take out R4 or any other similar card manufacturer is that they also hit us the homebrew developers:(
It is truly a case of fighting piracy. Anybody who thinks otherwise is severely delusional.
Wow, I feel personally offended by such comment.
I do develop homebrew programs for the DS. I am specifically developing a translator (based on the dicts.info dictionaries) using PAlib.
There are several *really good* homebrew apps for the Nintendo DS like Moonshell, DSOrganize or games like Lemmings (all the levels of lemmings for the DS, REALLY good). The DSLibris game is also a *very* good piece of software which allows you to read XHTML ebooks.
I am also in the process of doing a TIF image "reader", with the idea of converting PDF files directly to TIF multipage (monochrome for now...) via ghostscript and then being able to read them directly in the DS. This, after having played with the idea of porting xpdf or other programs... unfortunately the PDF and RTF are too complex for the tiny DS...
I don't have an R4 but a CycloDS Evolution and it is a really neat piece of technology.
So, as you can see, there are pleny of opportunities for a device like the DS. It is really a neat piece of hardware, and the touchscreen makes it more versatile.
And as an American living in Britain for the past month... man can I tell you the Brits are willing to bend over and take it.
Haha, that reminded me of something funny. The first year I lived in the UK I met an American girl. One day we went to a supermarket and were browsing through the CD's, when she told me that everything was the double compared to the prices back home, and then she proceeded to reason that it was given the 2/1 ratio of the dollar vs the pound.
Then I told her, imagine how does it feel for me coming from Mexico, where each pound is like 20 pesos!
Yup, the general British really do not know how hard are they screwing them. Granted, some Brits reading slashdot know about it, but the majority of people in the UK don't.
On the other side, they CAN afford it. You won't believe the number of TV's, beds, coaches and miscellaneous electronics that people just throw away!
With the current USA recession, Americans are "learning" to get the most from their items (shoes, electronics, etc), but people in the UK don't have such problems.
then don't buy it. if the price is too high, then they have priced it out of your range. deal with it.
And deal with it is what people do at the PirateBay.:)
Sorry if that deflates the slashdot readers attempts to justify theft though
Sorry to burst your righteous bubble but I really need to shed your ignorance. What SOME people do AFTER VISITING the PirateBay is copyright infringement which is COMPLETELY DIFFERENT from theft.
Everytime someone confuses (willingly) Copyright Infringement with Thief I chuckle, it is like saying that your sister was stolen when she got Anal Raped by the "theft"... yeah, he stole her decency or whatnot.
Yeah, people in the UK get royaly screwed for the overpriced shit. Companies put all kind of lame excuses as VAT or shipping. Yet, it has been shown that the companies charge a lot more than they should (even considering profits!).
The typical example I give people in the UK for trying to open their eyes is the Tesco vs Levi's issue, basically Tesco (the UK Wal Mart like chain) found it cheaper to buy Levi's Jeans in the USA, ship them to the UK and sell them at a lower price than what Levi's was selling them in the UK.
Levi's sued Tesco, but the lawsuit was a stupid thing about trade marks, which IMHO was just a side issue that Levi's used to continue screwing the idiots that buy such overpriced jeans.
Know what's harder than LaTex when you need math typeset correctly? Anything that's not LaTex.
Agreed, I just finished my PhD thesis in Latex ac ouple of months ago and I have say that I like Latex quite a lot.
Although Latex is not for everyone, once you get to know it, you will see all the benefits. For example, just yesterday a colleague was preparing a paper to submit for a conference, in word (2007 no less) and he spend about 4 hours (or more!) getting the references right. In latex, a combination of using the JabRef [bibtex] database and \citep [Natbib] take care of the references for me.
Not to mention indexes, references (I work in the same Word paper I mentioned putting references in word, having to mark, insert a label, then insert reference, sheesh!).
Similarly, just about two months ago (for my Viva) I decided to "learn" to use Beamer to do my presentation. I tried to do it in Lyx, but I felt like if Lyx prevented me from doing things, I finished going back to Kile and doing my presentation in Latex + beamer.
BTW, for those of you who hate the Maths package available in Microsoft Office, I would recommend Texpoint. That lets you edit your formulas in Latex inside powerpoint, and creates an image (png IIRC). That is what I used (before going to Beamer).
I usually (in the last 12 months or so) have been watching new movies via surfthechannel or the previous similar sites.
However, I have avoided watching Batman even though I am not a fan, but because according to comments I have read (here in slashdot, none the less!) it seems the movie is really worth it!
God, I even paid £8.0 (yup, that is about $16) for a ticket to watch Journey to the Centre of the Earth 3D, even though the dialogues and overal acting are crappy. But I like the 3D experience (which, in this movie seems just a forced gimming [like showing a yo-yo or 3D-friendly color spheres]).
The studies must learn that if they want people to go to the cinema to watch a movie they will need to provide something "extra" that you can get in the theatre. Or, they should start releasing the movies in other mediums.
btw, Firefox keeps telling me that "movie" and "movies" does not exist in the English UK dictionary, why is that? (I am not an native English speaker... fwiw)
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.
Agreed! we all know that Apple is a fruit and has nothing to do with "hardwares"... however, I also agree that the stocks of apples are getting a bit overpriced over here... but then again, what isn't overpriced in the UK:(
If I played for the next USA president election I would buy in favor of McCain win. That way, if he loses, I win (everybody outside the USA win...) and if he wins, I also win (money)!
It is only a matter of valuing how much do I want McCain to lose...
I specifically loved the "hex view" capability of Xtree Gold. Using that is how I did my first "hack"... by modifying the Prince of Persia SAV file in order to start directly at level 2 (w00t no more drink bottle of page 6 line 2 letter 3). It was one of the few moments when being tha-geek was kind of cool (and popular hehe).
Thanks, I will keep that in mind. I was really very frustrated after not being able to do a simple partition... I think I did not have GParted installed. IIRC (why is that btw?) although the Ubuntu live CD has GParted installed, it does not get included in the default installation!
All well and good... but I fail to understand why was this summary accepted instead of the more appropiate and insightful summary submitted by NewYorkCountryLawyer?
aaah
and THIS is the value of reading the comments in slashdot.
Thanks!
Running out of paper is hardly an important error.
You would'nt say that if it happened to you in the toilet...
"Glad I never got one of those fancy degree's, they obviously do not teach spelling or grammar."
I guess you are not aware that "earnt" is the British spelling of the past participle of the verb To Earn?
Even though English is not my first language (Hablo Español como lengua materna) I do know that.
I think you ought to be looking towards a career in management
I think you ought to be looking towards some more education...
the question is...
How many of those are willing to provide the paperwork for the work permit or visas HB1 or TN/TD...
In fact, the problem isn't finding jobs, the problem is finding programmers.

Hi Bill, how is that retirement going?

Uhh,
Did I wrote by error somewhere in my previous post that copyright infringement was OK?
I think you should learn to read.

Wow, you did could afford luxuries... all we could hope to download back in my day was MOD files, and we loved it!

Just give Stephen a fit tinfoil hat and forget about it :P
OMG, a slashdot story putting the Stallman Zealots against Apple zealots... this will be a gooooooood flamefest :)
