I imagine it will be more like the way we trace e-mail or RSA encrypted communication: we just gain a moment of physical access to the perp's machine, install some sort of spyware and leave.

Also, it's not the price of the stock; it's the market capital. If I sold 100% of GE as 1 share, it would cost about $400B, but it would be no different than it's current price of about 30.
So I'm not sure how much google is worth, but the price is pretty meaningless.
Dell profits from the efficiencies of economies of scale, just like Wal-Mart. Yes their systems are complete, but there is nothing particularly unique about a Dell compared to a Compaq. They basically compete on price alone.
Apple is basically doing what Sony does with its home theater equipment. Yes, this is annoying to those of us who want a PSP, but don't want to use MemoryStick, but there is a market for this type of product.
It would be ridiculous for Apple to compete with Microsoft (or Dell) at their own game just as it would be ridiculous for EMS to compete with Wal-Mart on price, but EMS and Wal-Mart both exist.
Something to note is that US citizens live longer than people in any other country... if we make it to 30. The reason it looks like we live shorter lives is because of drug use, car accidents (55,000 deaths / year) and violent crime.
It's hard to compare IMAP and POP directly-- they have different purposes. If one was just BETTER than the other, everyone would use IMAP. GMail doesn't use IMAP becuase POP is better... for them (who wants to maintain millions of states on a free e-mail service?).
Not a great example.

The problem is in the taxes.
The private company has to pay taxes to support its public competition. That's hardly fair. I'd be nervous about large-scale banning of public competition with private companies, but I think private businesses should be able to challenge public competition.
If a business can prove public competition is not for the greater good, but porkbarrel, then they're right.
I for one am very careful with my seeding because optimum on-line here in New Jersey will "cap" your connection based on some arbitrary upload:download formula which they won't release.
If this happens, you have to call them and get scolded and threatened with account termination.
How can you possibly blame the US for this? Yes, the RIAA is a US organization, but we, for the most part, don't tax our way out of problems in the US.
And the "sin taxes" that we do have in the US yield incredible black markets (cigarettes)... but at least these taxes go toward the public good (supposedly).
This tax is just blatently socialist. We have the government at large acting on behalf of a single industry with a compulsory tax. Insane.
The native AIM client is for noobs. You know, the silent majority out there who make AIM affordable for AOL.
(And who also make the rest of us use AIM in order to comply)
1) Population growth will settle just as starvation, disease and other 3rd world issues will settle as those countries liberalize and develop their economies so they can distribute goods and services.
2)Cities are far more efficient places for people to live than suburbia. If there were no cities, land use and pollution would skyrocket as each person took his 40 acres and a SUV. Look at LA. That's what the entire east coast would be like w/o cities.
3)Genetically engineered food is better than no food...
4) Nuclear power is a no brainer to anyone except NIMBY types.
"Environmentalists" are politicians. Most of their organizations are basically just law firms. I equate them with oil execs. We really need more publically funded independent research in vertical solutions to improving the environment.
Everyone knew that was coming, but interracial marriage is still marriage (ie, man/woman: the very definition of the thing).
Gay marriage means changing the meaning of marriage. It's not a civil right, it's a social change, and more of a lateral change.
Listen, if you can convince a majority of people to accept this change as necessary and prudent, then I'll be tolerant of it.
And truly, let's not compare the "gay rights" movement to the civil rights movement. They're not in the same universe. Gay people are some of the wealthiest, most comfortable people in the US. Blacks could barely survive out there and were denied the most basic of civil rights (education, voting).
But you're forgetting that gay people CAN get married! See, marriage is, by definition, a union of a man and a woman. Gay people can marry all they want. They just can't marry someone of the same sex.
There's no discrimination here. Things just are what they are. Shall we argue that men can't have babies, and call that a "civil right?"
The number of men teaching 4th grade has dropped to 15% in recent years...
Men and women just choose different careers. It's 75% men at tech schools and 75% women at liberal arts schools.
It's just a different paradigm.
I don't think anyone here would try to compare swing with Windows Forms in any real way.
You see both!
Controllers certainly gain from their ancestors. Things are copied, left out. (Remember the three pronged 64 controller? Talk about blasphemous.)
So, just as intelligent, intelligent design theorists believe: you can have ID and evolution together.

I see the main advantage being elevators that can do more than simply go up and down.
Sorry, it's great.
They're just not interested. A similar article might read:

Lead is horrible at sound proofing. It would probably be good at microwave proofing, though.

It's called a joke, douchey.
I read someplace in the privacy policy that they try to filter ads for personal situations like a death or a breakup.
If you have an e-mail thread yielding lots of advertisements, reply with:
"my grandmother died"
And they're all gone.
Maybe I'll make it my sig.
