If it was DAoC in the Warhammer universe I wouldn't mind to be honest if it included the same rvr style combat. But who knows about the engine. Unreal 3 seems popular these days.:)
WoW is a Blizzard game through and through; there's no real surprise that it's very solo friendly, easy to learn and highly addictive. A lot of people who have never played a MMOG will pick it up and its a great way to introduce new players into the genre.
Ultima Online was the first MMOG I ever played, at the time I really loved it. Now, years and years later I have moved on to new games. I went from having a P133Mhz system to a 3.6Ghz, yet the game is still Ultima Online. I think the Ultima universe has a fantastically rich tradition, and the game is due for a modern 3D sequel.
Some problems:
- People have too much 'stuff' and wouldn't want to leave.
- People have to many characters they don't want to lose.
Some solutions:
- Migrate the original content to the sequel to servers (or shards) that contain old world characters and loot so to not overpower new players.
- Launch virgin servers where people can make fresh starts and begin on a open playing level.
The game might cost a lot to make, but I'm sure EA can afford it. They have tried making sequels before without much luck, but if they lay the proper groundwork and hire the right people, I'm sure they could make it happen.
I won't comment on the free vs retail for the expansion, but the reason why Mythic is releasing Shrouded Isles for free is that with Catacombs, the newest retail expansion pack, they are introducing a new game engine which isn't compatable with the Classic game client. Thus SI, the expansion they are now offering for free, is the new minimum client needed to play the game.
Why not just run the Catacombs engine? Well, this is mostly used for people with lower end machines or players who run two or more accounts (it's less resource intensive).
Plus, it's over two years old and SI isn't even a popular zone.:)
I don't think Edge is very popular in the US. It's more of a Brit thing. Not to sound negative or anything.

Im 99.9% sure its for fantasy.
From what I understand Mythic will be making a new game from scratch, not taking over Warhammer Online as we know it from Climax.

Bruce, You still list Dark Age of Camelot in the 250k area, but I think it's a lot lower than that since WoW/EQ2 was released.

Dark Age of Camelot is an ever-evolving product. They don't plan on making a DAoC 2, so they keep upgrading the technology to keep up with the times.
