I'd say so, yeah. But I'm not going to judge Firefox based upon YOUR experience. I'm going to base it on my own; for example, I've had Firefox open for days on this system, with no fewer than eight taps at any given time, ALL of the frequently navigated, along with about a half dozen extension loaded, and yet FF's mem usage is sitting at about 140MB after all that. Not NEAR enough to bring this 512MB system to it's knees.

I'd bet there's some underlying issue with the FF build and/or system setup that causing your problems.

On the other hand, it may be a good idea to attach a generator to G. Washington's, T. Jefferson's and co coffins. Just think of the free energy! I've already tried that, sorry. A situation like this can only get them to spin the generators at approximately 3RPM, which produces hardly enough power to light a Maglight. And unfortunately, it would appear that events similar to this do not produce a cumulative effect; that is, only the greatest event produces an effect, and the potential of all lesser events are ignored.

I'm afraid you'll have to look elsewhere for your revolutionary energy discoveries...

The PS3 is running Linux so you can do your photo manipulating and web browsing stuff. Unless you can point me at a site that says otherwise, nothing's been said about the games actually running on Linux. If you care to point me in the right direction, I'll be happy to retract that point and apologize for the error. (I'd rather learn than argue.) The same used to be said about the Dreamcast. Everybody thought all the games were written for WIndows CE. No. SOME of the games were made for WinCE, the DC booted into whatever OS the disc had aboard.

Aye, absolutely correct. Part of what's always allowed consoles to get more out of comparitely less power than a PC is the fact that they've always had less overhead.

Run a game on a PC and you've got Windows and all it's friends in the background eating up memory and CPU time. Run a game on a console, and the game gets ALL the resources of the console to itself (with the exception of the 360; it keeps some of it's dashboard crap running, but presumably that's all lightweight enough not to hurt things much...)

Maybe the problem is that the gameplay behind id's games hasn't changed in any significant way. Doom was great back in the day, but as a modern game, it would be torn apart for being nothing more than a run-and-gun. Games like Half-Life 2 have done so well because of NON-combat elements, like story development and physics-based puzzles, in addition to some great action. id's games have remained focused on action, and many have found that to become stale, after all these years.

But that's all besides the point. The point was that Romero's own acheivements do not make him a "gaming god" worthy of emulation. His own actions caused him to be "asked to leave" id software, and since striking it off on his own he has failed to become a commercially successful name.

More to the point, I've had it happen on an entirely WINDOWS based network, which kind of proves to me that it's not Novell, or even SAMBA, it's network drives in general. It's also possible for a baby grand piano to fall out of the sky and land in my back yard, but I have no reason to believe it'll happen.

A NIC is a VERY simple device. The basic protocols it uses have been known for decades; creating drivers for such a device, with documentation, is fairly simple. GPUs, the center topic here, are, again, an order of magnitude more complicated. To expect OSS developers to be able to create drivers for a piece of hardware that they have no background with to out-perform developers that have already spent YEARS optimizing is just a wee bit delusional, and more than a little insulting to the people who do it for a living (honestly, since when did being an OSS developer automatically equate to being smarter?)

Is it possible? Yes. Is it likely? Hells no.

Which isn't to say that open-sourcing those drivers wouldn't do wonders for the state of current OSS drivers; their 2D performance would more than likely blow past the current set of OSS drivers. It'd still take YEARS for 3D performance to catch up to OEM supplied drivers.
