I think this is a great opportunity for 83-year old gradmas to start downloading some MP3's and throw wild parties, since the courts won't convict them. Rock on, grandma.
The developers are just being smart. If they were to implement every little thing every little user wanted, it would bloat. There's plenty of examples of where that happens -- take Java, for example. Just because the GNOME team may not send flowers and a thank you card to each person doesn't mean they aren't listening. It is that they have decided those ideas they aren't implementing aren't something they want to use.
I really feel your Mac pain. I love my Mac. Most people around here think it is just for artists who are too stupid to code. The OS is exactly the opposite, but you know, these people are like donkeys; stubborn as hell, and nothing like donkeys, in that they are very judgmental. Of course, here I am, casting judgment, so you know; hipocracy:-)
Whew, apart from personal anactodal experiences with the state that I can't talk about due to legal implications, not ready to cut-and-paste into a/. message. I'm sure I can mine enough of them, though. Google it.
"Wisconsin, where taxes are high, property expensive, salaries low, and few jobs to find. Gotta love it."
Excellent signature, ClippyHater. Drills right to the point. I live here because my parents guilt me too and I'm finishishing up my MS degree. I plan to move to the zip code represented by my ID (Honolulu, HI, 96822). No joke; I've grown to loathe this state.
Having lived here all but 1.5 years of my life, I can say this certainly doesn't surprise me. We know we're one of the most taxed populations in the union. We know our state government is corrupt and unethical. In a state that is almost entirely M$ dominated, it shouldn't be surprising the population is ignorant about the nature of the Internet. I'd be surprised if people put up a fight here about it.
If more people didn't agree with his agenda than didn't, they wouldn't have elected him president. That's the reason we have elections: the will of the people was represented. It is impossible to lead and make everyone happy. He is just making most people happy, which is at the very heart of our democracy. You are doing exactly what you should, though: try to convince people to vote differently next time. The system works!
Well, there are nits to pick on this I suppose, but I think it is reasonably implied that I mean people who actually voted.:-) How can a vote be counted if the person didn't vote? English isn't that precise, by nature.
Great point! Success in today's IT world is increasingly dependent on one's ability to communicate as well. IT guys are no longer allowed to be the off-kilter nasty little geeks who sit in their cubes 8 hours a day while smirking at everybody that goes by because they think they're smarter than everybody else. They have to interact and have a balanced world-view and healthy understanding of personality types. They need to communicate with customers to learn their needs directly. Although I can't say my Psychology degree helped all that much (it was too technical about it), the communication courses I took out of school sure did, and those courses are often part of Psychology programs as well.
Psychology. Don't laugh, my Psychology minor has been extremely useful, particularly the classes that dealt with cognitive Psychology, which is directly applicable to human-computer interfaces. I intend to turn that into a full Bachelor's someday.
Good point (what I could read of it):-) Of course, lots of people will claim MD is outdated technology too. But, in the musical world, it is still useful, particularly the players/recorders that have optical in.
100% of the people who voted count toward the score (ooh, somebody is going to FLAME that, I just know it). 100% of the citizens did not vote, but since they didn't vote, their vote doesn't count in the total. It's like saying 4 out of 5 dentists who chew gun prefer Trident. The numbers don't include the non-gummin' dentists!:-)
I completely agree. What I don't understand is when people have strong opinions about some other OS without using it. More often than not, I'll hear some person saying how superior some OS is and I'll ask, "Have you actually used the alternative?" to which they'll reply, "No, I don't have to. I know mine is better, so there." Childish. All OS's both rock and suck for their own individual reasons.
Well, close. I have a big gas-guzzling Toyota Camry. $30 to fill the tank! But, I guarantee, I won't notice when I run over his Smartcar in my Toyota either:-)
"An older, hybrid technology called magneto-optical (MO) is seldom used anymore. MO uses a laser to heat the surface of the media. Once the surface reaches a particular temperature, a magnetic head moves across the media, changing the polarity of the particles as needed."
Back in my day, this was fairly common. I keep forgetting that I'm getting old. It's been over ten years since I used magneto-optical disks, but it seems like yesterday.
You know, I do have to remind you of one minor-detail. Bush won the election; both popular and electorial. Which means there are a lot more people out there who voted for Bush than who didn't. So, you hate a lot of people.

You're right; that couldn't hurt.
I strongly disagree. *sigh* The more complex a system becomes, the less usable it becomes.

Ignore the troll; it was an anonymous coward :-)

Not to be picky, but the grammar on that article is horrible. Is it a real news outlet or is it a puncutation-lost-in-the-translation kind of thing?
Am I one of the few people who think that Tannenbaum won that debate?

So, THAT'S where my hair went!

Ooh, that's what it was! I knew I was wrong as soon as I posted it, but I couldn't remember the real name. I am out-trekked! I tip my hat to thee!!!!

Elections aren't based on gradients -- they win, or they don't. 51% does the trick :-)
I totally agree about the screw-your-neighbor aspect of America. I don't see how Bush caused that, though.
Well, close. I have a big gas-guzzling Toyota Camry. $30 to fill the tank! But, I guarantee, I won't notice when I run over his Smartcar in my Toyota either :-)

Wow... so... you'd pretty much rear-end my car with the Dubya sticker on the back then, huh?
