Can someone explain why Oracle cares about the success/failure of Android? I honestly don't know.
The success of Android means a potential 'licensing fee' from every Android install. They don't care about Android per se, they just want to charge everyone to be able to use it.
Google is full of smart people. I'm sure they saw this move - and the entire assault on mobile Java and derivatives thereof - coming long before Oracle started their anti-Android crusade. I'd be willing to bet that Google has something new 'brewing' for Android 3 that will leave this whole mess behind. You just don't get that many programmers together without a few being paranoid enough to have planned an 'escape module'.
Bacteria has the best chance of surviving whatever we do to the planet, so I'm betting the house on Bacteria to win! Not that it will do me much good when it comes time to collect... sigh
An MDARS robot, parked in the middle of a vast desert, dreams of becoming a Google Driverless Car one day. "I know I checked the 'do no evil' box on my application form. I wonder what happened? Stupid computers should never be trusted to handle something as complex as paying attention to details on a job application..."
I guess the companies that were working on these types of things didn't have available products before 2005. That certainly doesn't exclude graphics card vendors from working on these types of things in their labs - or discussing them at conferences - and graphics card vendors are the exact group of people this type of thing would be 'obvious' to.
In the linked article they claim "Bugat" was being distributed via the recent attack targeting LinkedIn users but the article they use as their reference clearly states the LinkedIn spam was distributing "ZeuS". Make up your mind, M'kay?
For the vast majority of people, the most heroic thing they could do if ever presented with Superman-like powers would be to immediately reject them.
What, and give up my chance to finally avoid all the traffic around here?
A real human presented with such powers would likely be a much greater threat to the rest of humanity than a help.
But, but... even a mere meek mortal like Mr Magoo?
Sure, he might start out rescuing cats from trees and people from burning buildings
Not if that darn cat was the one who started the fire in that building.
but how long before he has a mood swing or a temper tantrum?
Would you like that in fractions of an hour or would you prefer CPU ticks?
How long before he succumbs to narcissism and the kind of arrogance and paranoia that god-like powers would bring.
Well, probably not long after reading that sentence.
How long before he comes to resent humanity for not loving him enough, or worshiping him at the level he has come to believe is sufficient?
I guess that all depends on how long it takes before they get an appearance on Oprah.
And all that's not even factoring in the reality that this is a human being with sexual desires, greed, etc.
You say that like it's a bad thing.
How would this real life Clark Kent react the first time a girl turned him down for a date
Who's going to turn him down after a quick 'flying lesson'? "I don't want to drop you... so, your place or mine?"
or he didn't have money to pay his credit card bill?
He's a superhero, not a professional athlete.
Again, such a superhero would almost certainly be way more of a threat to humanity than a help. Unless there was an alien invasion or giant meteor strike imminent that he could stop, he would be much more likely to cause us way more harm than good.
Once the alien invasion starts, or the meteor is spotted on its collision with Earth, it's a little too late to make nice with Superman. Best pay it forward and hope for the best.
Reactors are always going to be expensive. At some point the cost will make the power generated by the plant to be not profitable enough to sustain the operation - and maintenance - of the plant. This isn't all that surprising al all. If other sources of power can be built less, and produce power for less, then reactors are going to sit and wait their turn again. Unfortunately for the nuclear industry the approval process takes longer than the economic swings that make their product desirable.
[types in 'cut and paste' into Windows Phone 7 help screen] Hi! I'm Clippy! It looks like you would like to 'cut & paste', is that correct?
[taps 'Yes'] I'm sorry, Windows Phone 7, by Microsoft, doesn't support 'cut & paste' yet, would you like to 'cut & paste'?
[taps 'Yes' again]
[hourglass] Hi! I'm Bob! Where would you like to go today?
[types in 'to get another phone']
[hourglass] Hi! I'm Clippy! It looks like you would like to buy another Windows Phone 7, by Microsoft, is that correct?
[taps 'No']
[hourglass] Hi! I'm Bob! Would you like to buy a Kin, by Microsoft?
Maybe it's for a 'Receiver having concealed antenna that suffers poor reception when held the wrong way'?? That would be a little more specific (and a touch less obvious);-)
In the end we'll all pay more for phones because these companies can't learn to get along. Who knows, they may each have patents for the same things issued by the infallible USPTO.
Congressman Wolf (R, VA) at a Tea Party Patriot's Dinner on Oct 3rd: We can no longer afford to ride the coattails of yesterday’s innovations; we have to identify and support the emerging technologies of tomorrow that will create American jobs.
The Chinese, Indians and other international competitors are actively monitoring new technologies and trends to support their firms. To date, we have not.
Are Americans willing to continue to sit idly by and allow the Chinese to dominate new industries at our expense?

What could possibly go wrong?

Hey! It doesn't work!
... I mean, how stupid could I be?
I guess I don't need to change it because everyone will think I did
My password is: 'slashtard'
It doesn't seem to hide it the 'preview' mode. I guess the only way to find out is to trust 'submit'.
I mean they are robots, guarding nuclear weapons....
Robots who are angry that 'MDARS' is the best acronym that the brain trust could come up with.
All I have to say is... a GPU is like a CPU. We're gonna get patents for everything twice now, just like with handheld devices?
Just wait until they start putting GPU's in handheld devices and we're going to see a *hat trick for each patent.
* I would have used 'three-peat' or '3-peat' instead of 'hat trick' but I believe those are trademarked.
Google has no references for "GPU accelerated video encoding" before 2005

A Graphics Processing Unit has been used to accelerate video!
If this doesn't qualify as 'obvious' then we are all doomed.

Have you ever heard about the invisible woman?
Heard about her? I've been dating her for years!

What about those of us who are lazy and tired and just want to be left alone? Can't we just be left alone??
Chernobyl was a South Park episode??
NELL was studying Shakespeare sites just a bit ago. NELL finds us slashdotters to be particularly tragic.
Don't you mean pedantically tragic?
Big Brother is watching you.
And so is his sister NELL ;-)

It basically has everything that is good
Well, except cut and paste....

Would that mean they'd need to call for 'take out' instead of 'tech support'?

Not for anyone alive right now ;-)
I'm sure he'll answer you as soon as he finishes his first copy.
