When you start to think about what could cause a spacefaring race to "die out" on a galactic scale, well, maybe we shouldn't be shouting out "Here we are!" into the void.
I don't mean to sound trollish, but no one I know has an internet connection that can even deliver up to a solid 2-3MB/sec throughput. So, in theory, 802.11b @ 11MB/sec still hasn't even been TRULY maximized. And based on that principal, even @ 54MB/sec.
Well, I'm a hungarian university student, and I've got a 100 Mb/s connection at the campus. That means a solid 10 MBytes/sec:)
Yeah, I could come up with some really great arguments about the value of the individual vs the value of the society, and of the sacrifice of the few for then enrichment of the lives of the many, maybe throw in a little dispassionate darwinianism with disclaimers that the species as a whole benifits from such things and end up making a compelling case for the nazi genocide of WWII... Doesn't make right, but sure does make a nice argument.
I don't expect the casual user to know any of that crap. They know they're running Windows (even if it's Xorg), they call any black text box DOS, and they know they have a C: drive and their CD player is D:. Why can't we make Linux that obvious ?
In my opinion one of Linux's greatest strength is it's versatility. You can configure it to do virtually anything (if you've got enough skill to do it, of course). Linux's target is not Joe Average... it has no intention of being a Windows killer. It's a tool - if I don't want to use it,I don't have to.
Think about it. If Linux would be as simple-minded to use, as windows, and Linux would treat you as a n00b, would you still want to use it?
Yes... Plenty of fish isn't nearly as ugly as http://csacsika.fw.hu/...:)
For those, who can't speak hungarian:), it's the homepage of a hungarian web design (!!!) "company"... (LOL)
It's worth a look...
Yes, and I think I don't have to mention that the page is IE-only...:)
Actually, there is a client, that implements almost every MSN messenger feature (winks, nudge, custom emoticons, wideochat, drawing, etc.): Mercury. It's closed source, but I've got a very good experience with it (I recommend the newest beta version). It can be downloaded from http://mercury.to/
It has been written in Java, so it's (almost:)) platform independent, inluding Windows,OS X, Linux.
Parent's right. I've got a PI233 MMX box at home with 64 MBs of RAM. I've installed Debian 3.1 Sarge on it, and with IceWM or any lightweight windowmanager, it's perfectly usable... heck, with a little bit of patience, even KDE 3.3 is usable on it...
amaroK.
It needs the kde-base libraries, but I think it's the best media player program avaliable at Linux. It supports song databases (via MySQL, or SQLite), and IMHO it has got a very intuitive user interface.
No, but I use OOo on a 64MB Pentium I 233 MMX PC under UHU-Linux 1.1. Yes, I agree, KDE isn't the best choice under there circumstances, but even with WindowMaker, it works satisfactory.
"Yes, Reapers. We have dismmissed that claim."
Or,

And You have triggered Godwin's Law, congrats

These aren't off the shelf desktops. What else would you expect them to run, windows ME?
:)
HP-UX, IRIX, Solaris, SCO UNIX, Mac OS X, free/open/netBSD...? Palm OS?
Hmmm... OS/400, perhaps... everything for user friendliness
aMSN has the custom emoticons feature. You can download it at http://www.amsn.sourceforge.net/. You'll need Tcl/Tk to run it.
Write only memory? /dev/null rulez!!!! :)
