I wouldn't wish having to ride mass transit on my worst enemy it was dingy and a good 25% of the people on it stank, literally reeked like they hadn't bathed in months (which looking at them? They probably hadn't) and the fact that several had such the stench of meth leaking out their pores i was just waiting for them to have a full fledged freak out and try to attack someone right then and there.

I personally say its just common courtesy to stand behind your words, its not like there isn't already a setting for logging in from a work or public terminal and again it takes like 3 minutes. On any given week I can have as many as 60+ people commenting on something I have said and maybe its me being southern but I was raised to believe if someone legitimately tries to engage in a dialog with you or ask you questions that common courtesy dictates that you respond, I mean I know it makes me a little pissed when I ask for clarification about a post when the person posting it obviously has a legit point to make, its simply unclear, and never get a response but when you throw ACs into the mix? Especially when you talk about things that don't go with the groupthink? For that ONE AC that has a legitimate post you'll find a dozen AC posts to wade through that are just variations on "fuck you nigger faggot cocksucker".

So with UIDs at least I can tell short of someone hijacking that account I'm dealing with the same person and if that person is a troll its easy enough to block them from showing up. To me the final telling example was last year when I gained my very own personal stalker as the ONLY places he would follow me after that first couple of weeks was places that allowed ACs...why? Because he quickly found himself either banhammered by admins or so low of a score myself and everybody else never saw his little insults on sites where he had to register. But sure enough he made it so that I wouldn't even bother looking at AC posts for the longest time because I would see a dozen responses and for every one that was "I think you are wrong and here is why I think that" I had to wade through 11 that were just "die you fat fucker die" stalker bullshit.

But that is why I changed my sig, there are 1 or 2 that actually stand by their AC posts, APK is one, that even though we disagree on many things he stands by what he says and every response I've gotten from him is actually trying to start a dialog about a subject, not merely spewing bullshit. But considering it takes like 3 minutes to whip off an account I really don't think its too much to ask to stand by your words. You are at work? Fine sign your AC posts and log in when you are home so we can all at least see you believe in your words enough to stand by them.

What he is talking about is "WinFS" which was NEVER released and the supposed abilities similar to what I described was only shown in a pre-rendered tech demo in 04.

Considering how MSFT has been known to show off vaporware that they never intend to release when they feel threatened (such as how they kept many businesses off of BeOS and OS/2 by hyping WinNT a decade before it was released with features it didn't actually have) I would say its just another case of MSFT vaporware meant to get the tech sites and geeks to wait for Longhorn (which was never released, Vista was just Server 2K3 with a bunch of half baked tech bolted on while Longhorn was based on XP and was tossed in 05) because they didn't have anything to actually sell.

But imagine how much of a game changer this would be man, imagine being able to type say "give me all pics of my mom where my sister is also there" and have the OS look at the indexes and DB based on relationships and go "Well here is 40 pics of his mom but only 3 have his sister and that is what he wanted" and it hands it up right then and there. Frankly with background indexing speed wouldn't be an issue as it could do it in the background when the PC is twiddling its thumbs from lack of useful work to do and if it embedded the data in the file itself (which is why I said a FS and not a program) then once ANY member of my family had indexed the file when i dropped that file into my PC it would add the metadata to the OS DB and be ready to go.

  4. Re:that would mean... on Seniors Search For Virtual Immortality · · Score: 1

Not to mention its as much vaporware as the 2002 DNF demo. What he is talking about is the Longhorn tech demo which showed off a metadata based file system called WinFS but we don't know how it actually ran because it was never released. Every. single. thing. we know about how WinFS supposedly "worked" is based on MSFT tech demos which frankly could have been pre-rendered BS for all we know and what they showed off in 2004 as WinFS never ended up in the hands of the public.

But I repeat, the guy or company that comes up with this, whether bolted onto an existing OS like Linux or Windows or built around the tech it honestly won't matter because it would truly be a GAME CHANGER. I mean think about it, imagine something similar to how you can instantly search txt docs only a hell of a lot more advanced and using a combination of facial recognition and pattern matching so that I could just point it at a folder and while I surf it indexes the entire thing, asking when it runs into a file it doesn't have a context for but otherwise filling in ALL the metadata and creating a searchable DB so I could say ask for " me and Ex GF, I'm in a blue shirt" and it could go "Oh there are 3 videos and 2 pictures where he is in a blue shirt but only 1 where his ex GF is also there so it must be this" and handing it up, no muss no fuss.

Lets face it McGrew this is one area where OSes frankly haven't gotten any better in ages, I can have my PC show me say every .AVI file or every song I have by Ozzie but it can't tell me which of my photos have my grandma in them. Considering how much video and picture data the average user ends up with in a year (which I should know as guess who has to try to save all that data when things go wrong, me) most folks end up with videos and pics all over the place with such "helpful" names as 001,002 or 12/11/2012 which really doesn't help us any. With a FS that could actually look at images and videos and build relationships between them based on content? We would be one step closer to the Star Trek computer where we can just ask real world questions and get useful answers. I'd sure as hell buy that in a heartbeat, wouldn't you?

As it is now ACs are like dealing with a spam inbox, sure there may be one or two legit emails in there but are you REALLY gonna wade through a billion fake viagra and penis pills just to find them? With a UID its like having you in my address book, I can filter out the spam and keep the actual comments.

Bonus points if you have the info embedded in the file during indexing so that I can drag photos from one family member's PC to another and have all the data.

because at the end of the day the problem with TFA, with our world in general really, is total information overload. We got too much stuff and too little time but we do have these uber powerful multicores so what we need is truly smart indexing. If its not sure have it ask and learn so if I drop a ton of pics and say "These are of my grandfather" it will ask "Well what was his name?" and update and put in the metadata and that is that, no sitting there editing all that data.

The bones bears this assumption out as many suffered multiple fractures and breaks over their relatively short lives which shows that they got injured quite often. Since we have found no evidence of them having wars or major conflicts one has to assume the injuries were caused by hunting which the amount of large bones in their caves does seem to bear out their hunting large prey which they would would be well suited for. Hell what do I know, the reason I remember the damned thing at all was the girl giving the presentation was a classic "cute nerdy girl with glasses" and since I've always liked that stereotype bits of it stuck a hell of a lot more than the later presentation which came from a guy that looked like he could have witnessed them first hand and every time he coughed I waited on him to keel over.

But, and I may be wrong, this is just how someone at a museum of science explained it to me so grain of salt and all that, but the way I was told it wasn't the SIZE that gave them a worse outlook it was the SHAPE in that they had small frontal lobs and really large rear brains which meant they'd have kick ass senses, probably several times better than ours, but their ability to put long term plans into motion would have been hurt by the smaller frontal lobs. The way she put it "We were planners, could think and plan ahead which then helped us with agriculture that made surviving some of the worst winters easier for us than for them".

Again if she got it wrong sorry, I will be the first to admit cute girl in glasses sure as fuck turns off MY frontal lobes when it comes to critical thinking but she did seem to know her stuff for what it was worth.

Oh please! If people use this software and it makes their day a little easier? Then they should damned well be able to organize and tell the company they want it kept. Its a damned shame Steve Ballmer doesn't listen to anything said other than "Just copy Apple" or I'd be coming up with one asking that Win 8 be thrown in the "do over" bin along with Vista and bringing back Win 7 until they could get an OS out the door that wasn't afflicted with an identity disorder.

Besides the thing is already so far left I wouldn't be surprised if many take a look at how leftist the petitions lean and go "fuck this noise" and walk away. Hell what was the FIRST petition it showed me after I signed for Reader? Give Obama, the guy who refused to arrest his AG for what several of the feds CLEARLY SAID was a "false flag op" to take away our second amendment rights after they found the Mexicans were buying USSR and not USA guns, give that clown a MANDATE to pass tougher gun laws? WHAT THE FUCK PEOPLE you have the commander in chief CAUGHT RED HANDED pulling a fucking false flag that got Americans MURDERED and you want to give him MORE power? Are you fucking stoned or just retarded? That would be like saying in 86 "Sure George there was no WMDs and all that yellowcake stuff was bullshit, but hey, you wanna take Iran and Syria while you are it that's okay because gosh darn it we LIKE you".

The other that pissed me off was one designed to "tell off" the NRA...for offering the ONLY proposal that would have had a shot of changing the outcome of Sandy Hook...Again is the left stoned or just stupid? "Tougher gun laws" wouldn't have done shit because...now hold onto your seats, I'm gonna hit you with some high concept here....CRIMINALS DON'T OBEY GUN LAWS STUPID which is why we fucking call them criminals in the first place! The Sandy Hook guns were STOLEN from a woman with NO record, so tougher gun laws would have done fucking nothing! Putting an armed guard, which Obama's kids get for free BTW, would have meant the nut would have to get through and kill dead a trained security officer, probably ex-cop, before he could do any attacks. Its common sense folks, if you want to protect something you put a fucking armed guard between the bad guys and the something, yet because Obama...again remember Fast & Furious, doesn't like it, while not getting rid of his own kids guards BTW, we are supposed to be...what MAD at the NRA for posting a common fucking sense answer to a problem that doesn't score political points? WHAT THE FUCK?

Sorry about the rant folks, but as a card carrying socialist seeing the left hijacked by a bunch that makes PETA and their "sea kittens" campaign look sane? Really pisses me off. I'm guessing this is how the fiscal conservatives felt when the neocons ran them out the tent, that the nuthouse had been taken over by the batshit. I mean maybe I'm fucking weird or something but after Nixon I was of the opinion if you caught the POTUS breaking the fucking law you should BUST HIS ASS no matter WHAT party he belonged to, yet the same ones that wanted to impeach Dubya? Not one word about fast and furious, you can hear crickets chirping...that's just FUCKED UP folks, totally fucked up.

See Crosshair's answer and my reply, I would only add that I have NEVER seen an infection come from one of the handful of first party sites that I allow to serve flash content. Hell I even loaded up a sandbox and spent a couple of weeks searching to find a free pornsite (myfreepaysite if you care to know) because I had male customers that kept getting infected searching for free porn but since I found the above site I haven't seen ANY infections from those customers that listened to me and switched.

Now if you want to see WHY I refuse to allow Flash for ads just look at my journal and my description of the "Yahoo porn bug" which used Flash to send spam to a Yahoo users address book. To this day I'll still get one or two spam emails a week from former customers that didn't heed my warning and get hit by the porn bug. The journal has the full description but without Flash, which I still argue is better than HTML V5 in every way? They wouldn't be sending out spam.

But better than does not mean perfect, or even great, I mean if I slap you its better than me shooting you in the crotch but I wouldn't call either something to look forward too, but sadly we simply haven't come up with a tech that can do what Flash does. For videos and games its low resource, low overhead, can run on even 10 year old hardware, what it does it does well but security is NOT one of those things which is why like Crosshair said you have to treat it like fire, good when controlled and a danger when not. Unfortunately the third party ad companies have shown repeatedly they have NO respect for the dangers of flash and will serve just about any flash video as long as the check clears. As long as that is the case i'll continue to block sites that use third party flash for ads (which includes Slashdot) because its just common sense.

This is why I said this "problem" could be solved VERY easily, just build a "people's car/truck" that gets a minimum of 38 MPG for the truck and 45 MPG for the car and make them both diesel as there are several projects on the board to make diesel a renewable resource and if any of those pan out? You'll already have the population ready to go. And this is doable NOW as building a small Ranger sized truck and Focus sized car that runs on diesel and gets good gas mileage is VERY doable, many diesel engines get close to and a few over those figures so its not much of a stretch, and by THEN using subsidies and a "cash for clunkers" program you could do something about the poor folks in used gas hogs which is why the current MPG for this country is a lousy 14 MPG. A people's car/truck program would cut our usage in half by getting rid of all those old gas hogs poor folks drive because that's all they can afford.

But mass transit died in the states FOR A REASON, because our culture simply isn't designed for mass transit. Look at the cultures like Japan where mass transit is wildly successful, you have a society built around conforming and order and obedience to authority, that is the complete opposite of America. Here all it would take is a couple of douchebags to ruin it for everybody which surprise surprise is exactly what happens, and frankly we are just too damned spread out (which I would argue is a GOOD thing, packing Americans in like rats is a recipe for disaster) to make busing and other public transports viable. Would I give up my truck if gas hits $10 a gallon for a bus? Nope, I'll just drive less and borrow my mom's beep beep when I need to go on long trips.

The sad part is sensible ideas like mine will NEVER be implemented because the AGW tent has been taken over by leeches like Al Gore and Goldman Sachs who have set themselves up to make fortunes off gaming the system while making sure they have to bear none of the cost thanks to shell corps. I mean when you have the same clown that wrote the "rules" on credit default swaps, aka worthless pieces of paper, writing the rules for carbon credits? You should know the platform has been hijacked by the scammers. Frankly this is why I support those against AGW, not because I don't think it would be smart to cut down on our usage of fossil fuels, as I honestly think they are more useful for plastics than they are as a long term viable fuel source, its because the ideas that would actually work have been thrown out because the leeches can't make fortunes gaming the system with something like a $20k "people's car" that would make a difference.

Other than playing Frankenstein....why would you want to? This isn't some alien here, its just a failed branch of our own tree, its not like these Neanderthals would be all that different from us which is why cloning them (unlike say dinosaurs) wouldn't be THAT difficult if you sunk enough money into it.

I mean seriously what WAS the Neanderthal? It was a little more compact than us, with a body designed to take more punishment at the cost of speed and agility (some unscrupulous military might find them attractive...if it weren't for the fact that giving troops armor is way cheaper), had a little smaller brain but not by a huge amount, we're not talking Lucy or early Java man here folks, and they had a brow ridge although again not as bad as many of the earlier offshoots.

At the end of the day what you'd probably have was a slightly squatter human that would probably fit into the low average end of the bell curve and honestly probably wouldn't have THAT hard of a time fitting into our modern society once they learned the ways of those around him/her. Hell I've known guys uglier than Neanderthal that had no problem getting GFs so most likely they'd just breed themselves right back out of existence in a few generations if you didn't stick 'em on an island somewhere and make 'em a protected species.

So I honestly don't get what the appeal of bringing one of these back would be for, other than just to say we did it and maybe morbid curiosity? If you were talking Lucy or early Java man or even those little hobbit people? THEN I could see the point, they were so different from us it would be like having an alien species brought to life, but with Neanderthals there is debate even to this day whether they just died out or we fucked them out of existence, so what would be the point of making more? So you could point and go "Ha ha, your brow ridge makes you look funny"? Hell 50k in plastic surgery and they wouldn't look any weirder than some of the guys I've run into over the years.
