And I notice that ALL you can do is call names because I dared speak ill of your god, you didn't refute a single point, why? Is it because you frankly have no way to refute them? Did they or did they not kill X-Server? The business push? Run off most of the FCP creative types by ignoring what they wanted?
You can go "la la la I can't hear you dirty man!" all you want, doesn't change the fact that from a business standpoint making X86 Macs makes about as much sense to the current Apple as going back to the PPC. The days of Apple being a computer competitor to MSFT are over, Apple has taken ARM and rode it to become the largest company ON THE PLANET, why in the hell would they waste resources on a constant refresh cycle that is nearly out of their control (and just look at the bitching they get for taking too long on the refeshes, the Mac pro guys have been pretty pissed) when you can add the sales of ALL of the X86 units together and it wouldn't even equal the iPod?
From a business standpoint X86 makes no sense except for nostalgia purposes, and Apple has never been big on nostalgia. You watch, when Apple has the 6 core 64bit ARM chips in quantity, which I predict at current speed of turnover to be a little less than 2 years Apple will make some big show of "The future of Macs" and it'll be an Apple ARM 6 core tablet with keyboard dock.
Let me make this VERY simple and easy to understand okay? ANDROID IS NOT LINUX, its an embedded OS controlled COMPLETELY by Google, NO outside contributors, NO Torvalds futzing, NO CHANGES to the driver model allowed by Google that isn't vetted and Google approved and NO GPL V3 anything allowed AT ALL. It has as much in common with Linux as your router does with a graphics workstation IE not a damned thing other than a couple of files. Hey your $2 calculator runs Linux too by that logic, why not try to steal credit for that as well?
Quit trying to take credit for SOMETHING THAT IS NOT LINUX...okay? does Android run Torvalds kernels? NO, Does it get distributed like a distro? NO. Does it accept outside changes? NO. Its a fucking embedded OS controlled by a corp that spends a billion a year on R&D you might as well say "Hey my router runs Linux so it must be ready for the desktop!"...facepalm.
And take the challenge, I dare you, double dare you. Film it and post it and prove me wrong. You can't because NO DISTRO PASSES something as normal and expected as a user owning a PC for 5 years and keeping it updated. Pick your poison they ALL FAIL at this simple test. Again say I'm wrong? PROVE IT. You have a camera I'm sure, plenty of places will let you upload your video, no breaks remember because we want to see you actually update with GUI only and not have the drivers break. SHOW ME.
ZOMFG did you even READ what you posted? Anybody wants to see how fanboyism creates delusional thinking here ya go, the guy says "I've not had a single issue...other than my graphics driver is broken (which I blame somewhere else instead of where it should be blamed) which I had to jump through the hoops for, but I drank the koolaid so that is okay"
You do NOT know how badly I want to reach through the screen and shake you right now while screaming at you QUIT TAKING SHIT ALREADY! WHAT THE FUCK, the community is so damned delusional the guys can post shit with problems that are...what? Features now? Serious wake the fuck up folks, this is beyond sad.
Does ANYBODY know how to block ACs without blocking legit users? Anybody? Because frankly all the AC posts here are about THIS level of stupid. Hey moron you DO know that every damned time Oracle puts out an update to java it TURNS THE PLUGIN BACK ON don't you? And that if you don't install Java you don't have Oracle jamming that plugin and crapware down your damned throat?
If the ACs are indicative of the future populace we need another world war like yesterday just to thin the stupid out of the damned herd.
Everyone acts like this is a good thing but it is NOT and here is why: First of all...doesn't anybody remember what happened with IE 6? How you had every damned site coded to IE 6 ONLY and any time a bug came out for IE 6 it spread like wildfire? Having everybody on the same thing just ain't a smart move.
Second nobody seems to be talking about the ugly truth of why Opera had to go Webkit, because the only way they could get within a million miles of iPad is as a pathetic skin for Apple's browser. I'm sorry but that level of douchebaggery and control was NOT cool when MSFT did it and it sure as hell ain't cool just because its coming from Cupertino. We are talking about a company that was able to change the entire direction of HTML V5 from an open codec to a patent trolling H.264,until they got stopped were controlling the prices of eBooks and are able to kill technologies like Flash and the Presto rendering engine by simply saying its verbotten on the iPad.
The future is NOT looking bright where I am sitting folks, everybody is cheering the death of MSFT but I wanted them replaced by something better not WORSE, didn't you? Between Google locking down bog standard X86 hardware so you can't install another OS without jumping through a bunch of CLI hoops to Apple controlling which way the web goes frankly this is looking to end up worse than when MSFT was ruled by Darth Gates and that's pretty damned bad.
We need the web to stay open as much as possible and be as patent free as possible but just handing control from Redmond to Cupertino is just switching one master for another when what we need is no masters at all. Hell maybe I'm wrong, the public sure does seem to love paying crazy prices for glorified game consoles so maybe I'm old fashioned in wanting a non corporate controlled web, but all these changes we've had lately? NOT for the better IMHO.
Arkansas? Pretty countryside and the majority of it is on solid bedrock. Pretty rivers, pretty mountains, lots of pretty nature and prices are a hell of a lot cheaper than in FL which is probably why we are suddenly getting so many retirees here.
But sometimes you just need to cut your losses which it sounds like there are parts of Florida that just aren't any good for building, same as i never understand why they keep rebuilding New Orleans, the whole reason it was put where it was was on account of river trade which isn't a big money maker anymore and its below sea level folks, time to accept that NO is a swamp and let it go, build farther up and a little higher off the ground and call that NO and be done with it. If that area of FL is so littered with sinkholes you are at risk of your house disappearing any minute time to pack up and move folks, just not a smart place to be.
You mean like how nobody in the government was arrested for Fast & Furious, an op which even some of those tasked to carry it out deemed a false flag designed to give the government the justification for taking the right to bear arms away from its citizens? Frankly after Fast & Furious nothing would surprise me when it comes to the government trying to curtail individual rights.
All the business units are already 80 plus as it saves money as you pointed out and frankly the 80 plus PSUs tend to last longer and when somebody is paying me a grand to build a system? they want it to last.
But what i was getting at is it didn't USED to be this way, before i could use "one and a half" so that the customers had headroom for growth and call it a day but the past few years as Drinkypoo found out the numbers all the UPS guys use are bullshit so you have to buy double just to get what you really want.
And I doubt a kill-a-watt would tell me much as frankly most of these systems are in no way power piggies. Most are using 95w AMD CPUs with midrange graphics in the 40w range, nothing that is really gonna pull a heavy load. Its just the years of racing to the bottom and lowballing on parts has taken its toll on the UPS business. Like I said I'm seeing the same thing with PSUs, whereas before you could buy one that was say 100w above what you needed to give you room for growth and now you need power and a half or even double just to keep from melting the PSU. It didn't use to be this way, used to be a PSU was a PSU and as long as you gave yourself some headroom to grow all was golden, not the case anymore.
And sadly this means I have to defend oracle even though I think Larry is a douchebag...whose fault is that? the answer is NOT oracle, it is SUN that is to blame! lets face it Sun never did release decent programs, just look at how long its taking the ODF to modularize Libre office and clean out the cruft.
Now if you want to blame Oracle for not shitcanning a good chunk of Java and starting over? that I might agree with you about but even then it would take time to come up with new code that would allow the JVM to run older programs written for it without having the gaping security issues but considering how buggy Java was under Sun I really don't think oracle deserves the blame here, they just got the mess when they bought the company, like buying a piece of property only to find out it was built on a garbage dump.
Or if you are on Vista or better just use any of the Chromium based browser or IE as those automatically run in low rights mode and not administrator. Why oh why can't Mozilla support low rights mode when its over 6 years old now is beyond me but the fact that FF runs with the same privilege as the user while the Chromium browsers don't was enough for me to replace Firefox with Comodo Dragon on all my installs, you should always use least privilege and FF just won't do that. Ironically the only "how to" on using LRM with FF actually undermines LRM until its worthless, so if you use Java don't use Firefox, use Chrome, Dragon, SWIron, any of the Chromium based will give you better security.
Nope its the damned games. Minecraft and Pogo and a shitload of other damned Java games have been released and become REAL popular which means a shitload of java installs that can be pwned. Its a damned shame, I saw Java practically disappear from the non corporate desktop only to see java all over the damned place now.
What sucks is after years of watching Java disappear from the consumer desktop its fucking making a comeback, ARGH! Why is it coming back? Damned Java games like fricking Minecraft that's why. Why oh why did the game designers suddenly decide to start using Java again,is it because of Android? if so the person who came up with Android needs to be shot because this is a fricking nightmare! To give geeks a better understanding imagine if after all these years suddenly IE 6 made a major comeback, wouldn't you want to scream? For the love of God it was almost dead on the desktop!/walks away muttering and sobbing/
Know what is fucking sad? That you consider that acceptable, that is fucking sad. So here you are ADMITTING that your drivers are only good for 2 years MAX, is that correct? With the average lifespan of a modern PC being 5-8 years, did I read you right?
Until a manufacturer can release a product with a driver on the disc and know that driver will work for the lifetime of the product? I'm sorry but your OS isn't ready for the masses, its not. And tell me friend, what makes you think Linux Toravlds is smarter than the devs of BSD, Solaris, OSX and iOS, Windows, and even OS/2? because they ALL HAVE A DRIVER ABI and Linux does not. I'm sorry but when that many development teams go left and you go right its not "cool" or trendy, its you being an arrogant ass just for the sake of it. Linus, like too many of the devs, don't give a shit how much pain he causes the end users as long as it "Works for me (TM)" and it is THAT kind of attitude that has left Linux flatline.
I've been a system builder for more than 20 years, building on average 3 boxes a week and probably fixing a dozen more, know how many times I've seen Windows update break a driver since XP came out? TWICE, that's it, that's all. The first was a cheapo capture card by some fly by night company that was here today gone later today that wouldn't run on anything except XP RTM for some reason and the second was a K-World super cheapo wireless card that would crap itself if you looked at it funny, it didn't like Vista SP1 but considering I had to use the XP driver because the company seems to abandon products after 6 months I don't know how one could blame Windows for that one.
Again put your money where your mouth is, I DARE you to prove me wrong. Take The Hairyfeet challenge, film it from start to stop with NO breaks (so we know you aren't hunting forums for fixes when the camera is off) and post your video to any of the bazillion sites that will let you. Go ahead and prove me wrong why don't you? You won't and the reason is because you CAN NOT DO IT because in over a dozen tries with different distros and the most boring hardware I could find Linux shit itself and died before 5 years, half the time Windows gets support, of updates could be applied! How fucking sad is it you see in Linux forum after forum the advice to "install clean" for every God damned update, that is the kind of shit Win98 users had to do and you call THAT progress?
if you can't even supply a fucking lousy 5 years worth of updates, when the average low end system has multiple cores and oodles of RAM and thus can be counted on to easily last 6 to 8 years WTF makes you think your product is ready for the masses? You think Grandma is secretly a bash programmer? Sally the secretary has a spare box running Windows to Google for fixes when the Linux one craps all over the wireless?
At the end of the day I want Linux to succeed I really really do. I think Win 8 is an abomination that should be recalled and I think MSFT treats us system builders like dogshit so if anybody wants Linux to be ready its me but I'm not gonna lie and delude myself into pretending that a system shitting on drivers every. damned. time. you update the stupid thing is acceptable, because its not. And frankly Linux users should be ashamed of letting the devs get away with it!
Sooo let me get this straight...you installed an OS that came out FIVE YEARS before the hardware was made...and are bitching it didn't have a driver? Really? I doubt Win95 would have drivers for that new Core 2 Duo which just proves Linux is the best evar!
Do you see ANY B&M stores carry your product? No. Do you see any small shops like mine carry your product? No. Well why? We don't get ANY breaks on Windows pricing so by carrying your product we could raise our profits by a good 40% or undercut the competition, so why?
Again I DARE you to take the Hairyfeet challenge. take ANY distro that comes out on what Linux considers a normal release schedule, which seems to be 6 months to a year and a half (No LTS because Canonical has abandoned it for a rolling release), now download the one from 5 years ago (Again I'm rigging the test IN YOUR FAVOR by making your product only support HALF the length of Windows support) and then update to current using ONLY the GUI, as a normal user would. Go ahead, I'll wait...what was that? Your drivers broke? Well there you go friend, now you see the problem.
It doesn't have a damned thing to do with source, it has to do with Torvalds being an arrogant ass. For proof just look at BSD and Solaris, they don't have this problem because they have a stable driver ABI. Sadly they are both aimed at servers and support for consumer hardware is beyond lacking but they show its not the source, its the driver model.
And for those that label me troll? You are NOT HELPING LINUX by taking shit, okay? that does NOT make Linux better, does NOT help Linux move forward, you are taking a shit sandwich handed to you and going "Mmm that is some tasty feces" when you SHOULD be saying "WTF is wrong with you? Take this back and give me something worth having!"
Again I point to "The Hairyfeet Challenge" which you can find posted all over the net, its about as simple and boring a test as you can come up with and I ONLY use bog standard hardware, the same kind on hundreds of millions of machines. Simply take the OS from five years ago, and update to current...that's all, that's it. No miracles, no multiple monitors or fancy graphics, just be working at the end of 5 years of simulated updates and EVERY DISTRO HAS FAILED.
Do you think you are HELPING Linux by accepting that level of broken? Do you honestly truly believe Linux has a snowball's chance in hell as long as you continue to let the devs get away with that? We aren't talking some strange exotic hardware folks, Intel, AMD and Nvidia chipsets, Realtek and Sigma Sound, Realtek and SiS networking, Broadcom and Intel wireless...how fucking bog standard are those? Hell I'm even rigging the test in your favor by limiting it to ONLY 5 years where Windows gets 10, I am ONLY using the most bog standard hwardware, no weird shit like capture cards that Windows supports, I'm fucking bending over backwards to help you win and you STILL FAIL every single time? WHAT THE FUCK!!!
How much more proof do you need? How about the fact that many shops risk hundreds of thousands in fines and even jail for stealing Windows when they could have your product for free? How about pirated Windows, that is a much bigger risk of infection and doesn't get updated in most cases STILL has several TIMES more users than your free for life product has? There is a REASON why this is so, its because you let the devs from Torvalds on down get away with this Mickey Mouse amateur hour shit when you should be breaking out the damned pitchforks! Just stop it already YOU ARE NOT HELPING WITH THIS FANBOY BULLSHIT.
Not to mention everyone here seems to be missing the point of WHY they were so quick to jump on the bandwagon...does anybody here think these megacorp ISPs give a rat's ass about any copyrights they don't profit from? Fuck no but what they DO care about is customers actually getting what they paid for!
You see folks for years the ISP have oversold the HELL out of their lines, in some cases claiming a good 5 times what they could actually deliver because they counted on so few people actually using what they paid for they could get away with it. Then a funny thing happened....people actually started using their connections. oh they'll SAY its because of piracy, but that is bullshit as I've known plenty of pirates and most are still downloading DVDrips that suck a hell of a lot less bandwidth than somebody like me who doesn't pirate uses. Where is my bandwidth going? Steam, Hulu, YouTube and for awhile Netflix.
See the ISPs don't like this for a couple of reasons. One since they are all now in the content business, an obvious conflict of interest BTW, well they sure as fuck ain't gonna be happy if you are watching Hulu instead of paying them for their overpriced channel packages are they? Not gonna be watching their PPV if you already have netflix, and if you are using Steam or OnLive that is hours you COULD have been giving them money for content that went to gaming companies instead, can't have that. The second reason hurts their bottom line even worse, for years they haven't added shit as far as new lines and capacity and now that even grandma is using YouTube and Hulu that means if they don't find a way to "thin the herd" of those that actually use what they paid for? Good God man, they may actually have to...gasp!....stop handing all the money out as bonuses to the execs! The horror!
So I have NO doubt that the first ones to see six strikes? Will NOT be pirates, it'll be the ones actually using close to the full amount they paid for. The Steam users, netflix and Hulu users, all those that get close to their cap every single month will get a "uh oh, you used what you paid for, you dirty filthy pirate you" and run out on a rail. that way they can keep falsely advertising their have more capacity than they have, keep giving the profits as bonuses, and keep their content making crazy money because that doesn't go against your cap don't ya know.
LOL Steam? Hard DRM? You DO know that damned near every cracked game on the web is the Steam version, yes? or that cracked Steam clients are as plentiful as rule 34 pics?
So you can beat your little DRM bullshit drum, meanwhile I have gotten VALUE FOR MY MONEY because I also get 1.- Chat, 2.-All games updated instantly, 3.-Notified if new content is released for my games, 4.-Excellent support, even on the weekends and holidays (I even contacted them on Xmas eve with a problem with a game's DLC and they contacted me in less than an hour with a fix, now THAT is service!), 5.-Matchmaking, 6.-great forums for each game,7.-Support for and highlighting of new indie games, 8.-and of course lower prices.
Now if you offer me ALL OF THAT and all it "costs" is a "DRM" that takes me less than 20 minutes to crack if I gave a fuck? I'd say its a hell of a bargain, which is why I've bought 3 times the games I used to since joining Steam. I even got both my boys on Steam, it makes MP gaming a pleasure instead of a chore (its as simple as "Hey you wanna play a game?" instead of fucking with ports and IP addresses) and I can gift them any game at any time with less than 3 clicks. You can be a hater if you want, I'd say Steam is an example of service done RIGHT instead of crap like Starfuck and SecuDUMB.
Well I already have my customers plug the extra crap like printers on a seperate surge protector because I had heard some of those, especially the high end printers and scanners some of my customers use, can really pull on startup so I can tell ya that ain't it. ALL that is plugged into the UPS are the PCs and the monitors (we have to put the monitors because these ain't your cheapo LCDs, we are talking the high end graphics monitors) and I have found the "double" rule is pretty damned mandatory.
But like I said now I'm seeing that with PSUs, and of course as you pointed out their laptop times are complete horseshit as well. Like I said this is what happens when ALL of the companies lowball, they can get away with bullshit like this because they are all doing the same bullshit. Just look at how all the SSD manufacturers put out these insane MTBF numbers when we know that the more cells and smaller processes equal worse MTBF times, its all marketing bullshit which mans you gotta play the game. To steal a line from Tron Legacy "I stand for the users" and what matters is them, so you have to know what works and what don't or you could cost somebody some serious dough and I've found the double rule WORKS and that is what matters.
And as a passenger I can understand this because once I was shown what to listen and feel for you can tell a HELL of a lot about a plane from sound and vibration. And force feedback really isn't the same, that is like saying a PS3 controller gives you the same info a formula 1 car does when it whips around the track. Even the best force feedback is VERY crude and just doesn't have the ability to give you all the info a pilot normally gets in flight.
And the "crashing flight sims" really don't surprise me, I know a Vietnam F4 pilot who flew a ton of missions over Vietnam and every time he'd try one of the flight sims he'd crash and burn. I even stuck in one with the F4 just to see how he'd do, crash and burn. He said you just don't get enough of the feel to really "read" the plane as he put it and without that he was no better than your average guy.
Sad isn't it? And look at how they practically call me the devil for daring to speak about the holy company? And its not like I hate Apple, I personally don't care for their locked down style but I can see why some would prefer that, but if you look at it strictly from a business standpoint along with previous moves the company has made? what I am saying makes sense.
I mean first they killed the X-Servers, then killed the business push, then turning FCP into an overpriced iMovie which ran off the creative types, why? Why would you do this? Simple when you look at the bottom line the amount they make as a consumer electronics company is insane, all of X86 sales at Apple I doubt would even add up to what they make on the iPod, much less iTunes or iPad. Finally you have the fact that with ARM Apple has complete control of the pipe, something that not only Apple has consistently shown a preference for but its current CEO spent over a year flying around the world making deals JUST to insure their supply chain would be the way they desired? it don't take a psychic to see what the future seems to be holding.
And tell me this jedidiah, how many Apple users would this REALLY affect? I live in a college town so I'm around typical Apple users all day, know what I see? they are surfing, listening to music or watching videos...all of this works just as well in ARM and they could just as easily put out their own Asus transformer style Mac and do all of that AND control the pipe AND have crazy battery life, hell since they control the OS they could even put a low end i3 or AMD quad in the keyboard base and have the best of both worlds!
But if you look at what they've done for the past decade its pretty obvious consumer electronics is the name of the game at Apple, X86 really doesn't give them any advantages in that arena and as i pointed out it costs more in refreshes and makes less profit. Hell if I were CEO I'd probably toss X86 too, isn't the press always saying "the PC is dead"? So why stay in a dying market?
Can you fire Linus Torvalds? Along with most of the team leaders? Sadly THAT is what you'd need for true growth. Look at how Torvalds just keeps cranking out the kernel, this sure as hell doesn't help stability when there isn't an ABI as it makes drivers break more often, and just look at some of the facepalming stupid move the devs have made, ALSA trashed for Pulse LONG before it was ready for primetime, KDE 4 had the same only worse as it was barely functional and had jack shit for features, and how about Gnomeshell? Makes Win 8 look like MSFT gives a fuck by way of comparison, I'm shocked they didn't change the logo to the finger because that is what they were giving their fanbase.
Waste your mod points all you want, call me the devil, as a retailer i've been begging, writing articles, fuck people we ain't asking for much here, just some true reliability and solid functionality and what do we get...now Ubuntu is going rolling release so all the breakage can be totally random! yay!
There is a REASON why pirated Windows beats your free product in marketshare by a country mile and its REALLY simple...see that copy of XP? You could install it at RTM and it would STILL BE RUNNING when EOL comes next year...that is FOURTEEN YEARS OF SUPPORT FOLKS! And see that copy of Win 7? 2020, any system its installed on now will STILL be running it in 2020 bar hardware failure. No "update foo broke my drivers" no playing hardware roulette, no having your gear working before an update and it turned into a broken mess after...fuck has ANY Linux dev heard of testing? Not from where I'm sitting they haven't.
I've been giving "The Hairyfeet Challenge" for 6 years now folks, SIX FRICKING YEARS and NOT ONE PASSED, you name your poison, not one has passed it yet! And I'm not asking for a miracle here, I'm just asking for the hardware that works at the start to be working at the end without the devs shitting on the drivers...is that REALLY so God damned much to ask for?
Fix THAT and me and every other small retailer would be HAPPY, you hear me? HAPPY to have your product on our shelves. Know how much Windows OEM eats into my sales? try 35 fricking percent, think I LIKE handing that money to Redmond? Hell no, I got bills to pay like everybody else and Redmond sure as hell hasn't been treating us system builders right. But until you can deliver a product that won't put me out of business with after sale support costs you can give it up chuck, MSFT could put out windows Goatse with smell-o-vision and it would still get more sales. hell look at that flaming turd Win 8, its already got more users than Linux and its a shitpile.
I don't know how much of it is that or the fact the drones just don't give you the feedback a real plane does. I have a friend who is a pilot and he's taken me up a few times and he KNOWS exactly what is going on with the plane just by sound and feel. he knows what each and every vibration is and whether it is correct or an indicator of something wrong simply because he knows the planes he flies like the back of his hand. I have heard the same thing from military pilots, that they knew their F4 or F15 like its a part of them and could tell instantly when "something wasn't right" just by what the plane was telling them via sound or vibration.
With the drone you are really only getting video, maybe sound, you certainly aren't getting all the feedback a true pilot gets when they sit in the seat of a real aircraft. Now maybe they will find ways to fix this, maybe computers that will take over if something is going wrong, who knows, but I wouldn't be so quick to blame the pilots when we really are in the most early infancy of the tech.
I think he is talking about how all the carriers sell phones loaded with crapware and if it was simple to get rid of, like say "push this button to load cyanogen mod"? Most would do so.
But I think this ultimate goes to a deeper problem with cellphones in the USA, and that our system is set up all distorted. From what I've been told the rest of the world simply buys their phones and then chooses their carrier and plan, no different than how you buy any PC and then choose the ISP in your area that offers the best deal. Contrast this with the USA where they simply give you the phone and make more than double their money on the cost of the phone with their frankly shitty plans.
With the price of ARM SoCs falling like mad there really isn't a point to keep the current system except that it lets the carriers have captive audiences and make crazy money. I have to wonder if that isn't why pre-paid plans and phones are exploding, folks aren't getting tired of getting boned and would rather have contract free phones instead. I know I'm seriously looking at the Walmart unlimited (yes I know its actually 2GB per month, I don't use a smartphone for anything other than GPS and other basics so that is fine) because frankly the data plans in my area suck price wise and with that I can just buy an Android phone and call it a day, just buy a card every 6 months and not deal with carrier bullshit or extra crap on my phone.

For the love of God it was almost dead on the desktop! /walks away muttering and sobbing/
