I had a friend that was always sick with one thing or another, had problems with his weight, moved out into the middle of nowhere in the desert and all of his problems went away once he was no longer sucking down chemicals all the time.

If the price of E-Ink had dropped a LOT faster, if they would have come up with even 16 bit color, then maybe E-Readers would have some life left, but when you can get a 1.2Ghz Cortex A8 tablet with ICS for $80-$100? This difference is always why you see plenty of sociopaths in politics and as CEOs, its that "the world revolves around me, fuck everybody else" attitude that lets them make vast fortunes. Look at Steve Jobs and Bill Gates, i would argue both were sociopaths. While Woz was building the Apple II Steve fucked him out of his share on a breakout game they sold to Atari. Did Steve need the money? Fuck no, he was a Berkeley grad with rich parents but he didn't care because he deserved all the money as far as he was concerned, it didn't matter that he didn't write a line of code, he sold it so fuck the guy that made it, friend or not. You see the same thing plenty of times in Gates' history as well, including smiling to Job's face and lying his ass off while he was stealing the Mac design for Windows.

So I'd say its a pretty big difference, not too many real psychos that run fortune 50 companies, plenty of socios that do, because at the end of the day this is THEIR world, you are merely here to serve THEM as far as they are concerned.

She says "Oh I can't afford to buy any right now" and I tell her she is doing me a favor, I don't have the room in the shop for these and they are ready to go, fresh installs of XP and everything. Well I load her up with the full boat, monitors and all, and she is crying like anything then because she can't believe anybody would just give her computers like that. Anyway i get an email from my buddy 6 months later, he helped her find a decent job in a little office somewhere and she brought one of the PCs back to him once she got her a laptop so he could pass it to somebody else, the other unit being used by her kids for schoolwork.

I mean there is a REASON why we have never had another WWII since the 1940s, where we have gone up against a technological equal, its because they all got nukes now and nobody wants WWIII. Because of this the ONLY wars we are gonna get is proxy wars or goat herders, nobody is gonna risk a war between nuclear powers. hell even China whose behind Russia and the USA on nuke tech can make the entire west coast glow in the dark, so other than proxy fights and saber rattling we ain't gonna do shit to them and they ain't gonna do shit to us.

You send in the stealths to blind the C&C and make their SAMS into scrap, which thanks to sats we know weeks in advance where all that shit is, you send in the wild weasels along with the first bombing runs after the stealths are done to take out any stragglers,, then once that is done between the APCs and air power any heavy tanks they try to move are just gonna be sitting ducks. Then the APCs do what they do best, which is mopping up the ground troops and crowd control.

So I would agree with you IF this was still the cold war and it looked like we may be rolling tanks across EU to face down the T-90s which are backed up by kick ass mobile SAMS, but the odds are better that you win the powerball 3 times in a row than that ever happening. Are there people that can get their work done in LO and Gimp? Sure but they are a minority that frankly are using so little of the features they could just as easily use something web based like Google docs and get the same results.

I would argue that this, this right here, is why the more locked down proprietary stuff is winning and GPL software is more and more being left out, because "free as in freedom!" is being used as a crutch and since most software won't fit under the blessed 3 model then it simply won't get any better. Notice how I asked how games and desktops could survive under the blessed 3 and never got a single answer? because there isn't one, the blessed 3 only works in a couple of niches and even in the enterprise support contracts are dying in favor of web based and consultants, so soon GPL will be even more marginalized under the blessed 2, whereas those that can actually make their living selling software will have the resources to make their product better.

Hell I can take a copy of XP RTM, install my drivers and software, then upgrade it through all 3 service packs AND all the patches that came after and every single driver and app will still be working, could you do the same with ANY Linux distro? I think we all know the answer to that, and that is why Linux has no share on the desktop, even with MSFT charging over $100 a copy.

Actually that is why I'm either loved or hated anywhere I go on the net (when I told a friend of mine my handle he said "Oh yeah I've heard of you, half the guys I hang out with think you'd be great to have a beer with, the other half hopes you die of ass cancer!") because the two things I absolutely loathe are "magical thinking" and hypocrisy so when i see the same old groupthink and bullshit being spewed as gospel i just have to destroy them with the truth.

And I actually enjoy it when they run back to their bubble, no different than how I get a nice warm fuzzy feeling when some FOSS zealot calls me shill or astroturfer or troll (I call 'em FOSSies because like Moonies it becomes a religion to them, and those three words are their equivalent of faggot, nigger, and cocksucker) because it lets the entire audience see how full of shit they really are. Its always the same, I'll point out facts which bursts their magical thinking, they will try to come up with a counter, I'll hit them with citations backing up the facts, then it always ends with them calling me filthy names like "shill" or "You're one of THEM!" which just shows everyone how they simply can't come up with any actual evidence to back up their position so all they can do is call names like a 14 year old Halo player that just got spanked.

So I would argue that it IS bursting their bubble, because the whole point of them pushing their shit on the net is to gain more followers and by pointing out all the holes in their magical thinking all they can do is go "La La La, I'm right faggot, La La LA" which of course makes them look like little punks and helps turn people sitting on the fence AWAY from their cause, thus negating the entire point of placing it on the web in the first place.

At the end of the day I don't care what "ism" it is, communism, capitalism, libertarianism, it ALL has the same basic flaw, the magical thinking that says "If only X would happen then everyone would play fair and things would be better!" which time and time again has proven to be a lie. It ALWAYS starts the same, the "ism" is implemented and soon after those with wealth start manipulating the rules to consolidate power, it becomes more and more corrupt, until finally the people lose faith in the "ism" and the whole thing, either peacefully or by violent overthrow, collapses only for the whole thing to start over with a different "ism".

You see THIS is why I would argue keeping 386 (hell anything below the P4, that's the 686 right?) is just pointless, its not like even the poorest of the poor is gonna be trying to run a 386 or 486 anymore, hell you can find freebies and dumpster bait several orders of magnitude faster than that so its really pointless.

And I know what you mean about older hardware, we PC shop guys are notorious for being packrats but there comes a time when you just have to let that stuff go. Hell I really need to clean out the chip drawer at the shop as there are several working CPUs in there I just know I'm never gonna trip over a free board for and even if I did nobody would want it, but I just hate throwing out working gear, ya know?

But there just isn't a point in 386 or 486 support, not when you can get an ARM thumbstick for $25 that will run rings around it while using less power than a 486 PSU loses to heat, if you just have to have x86 support you can find those AMD Bobcat boards for less than $100 while being 80 TIMES faster (1600MHz X2) and using less than 10w of power for most loads.
